INTRODUCTION: Oral clefts are major congenital anomalies that may affect the lip and/or palate, and that may also involve the nose and nostrils. In Argentina, their prevalence is approximately 15 per 10 000 births. In 2015, the Ministry of Health of Argentina created a national health care network for children with oral clefts in Argentina through the joint work with the National Registry of Congenital Anomalies (Red Nacional de Anomalías Congénitas, RENAC) (coordinating center for the national network) and the SUMAR Program. The objective of this study was to describe the health care network

Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome is a rare disorder involving midline abnormalities such as holoprosencephaly, nasal cavity anomalies, cleft palate-lip, hypotelorism, microcephaly, and panhypopituitarism. Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis is a lethal cause of neonatal respiratory distress due to narrowing of the pyriform aperture anteriorly and it can be confused with choanal atresia. In this report, we present a newborn infant with solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome accompanied by other abnormalities including holoprosencephaly, nasal pyriform apert

In 2016, we described that missense variants in parts of exons 30 and 31 of CREBBP can cause a phenotype that differs from Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS). Here we report on another 11 patients with variants in this region of CREBBP (between bp 5,128 and 5,614) and two with variants in the homologous region of EP300. None of the patients show characteristics typical for RSTS. The variants were detected by exome sequencing using a panel for intellectual disability in all but one individual, in whom Sanger sequencing was performed upon clinical recognition of the entity. The main characteristic

Cilia have multiple functions including olfaction. We hypothesised that olfactory function could be impaired in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). Olfaction, nasal nitric oxide (nNO) and sinus CT were assessed in patients with PCD and non-PCD sinus disease, and healthy controls (no CT scan). PCD and non-PCD patients had similar severity of sinus disease. Despite this, defective olfaction was more common in patients with PCD (P<0.0001) and more severe in patients with PCD with major Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) abnormalities. Only in classical PCD did olfaction inversely correlate with

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate develops during embryogenesis due to an alteration in the fusion of the tissues which will form the upper lip and palate. The rate of occurrence in Chile is 1.6 per 1000 live births. The object of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of the Grayson nasoalveolar molding appliance in reducing the gap between the alveolar segments in cases of unilateral cleft lip and palate by sex, age at start of treatment, initial gap between the alveolar segments, and number of checkups.
METHODS: The study design was quasi-experimental, with measurements taken

OBJECTIVE: Primary cleft rhinoplasty has almost become the norm in cleft practice. Although various closed and open rhinoplasty techniques are in use, there is no consensus as to which technique is superior in terms of outcome. The authors hypothesized that the long-term outcomes of open rhinoplasty during primary cleft lip repair in unilateral cleft is better than that of the closed method. This systematic review has been done to evaluate the hypothesis by a review and analysis of literature.
METHODS: Protocol was registered on the PROSPERO register of systematic reviews. PRISMA-P guidelines

BACKGROUND: Brainstem cavernous malformations represent around 8%-22% of all intracranial cavernous malformations but exhibit a higher annual incidence of hemorrhage (2%-3%) compared with other cavernous angiomas and tend to be more symptomatic given their proximity to critical nuclei and fiber tracts. Recently, endoscopic endonasal techniques have been used for the removal of ventral skull base lesions, with significant improvement in operative morbidity and mortality compared with open approaches. Here we demonstrate the utility and feasibility of the endoscopic transclival approach for vent

Femoral-facial syndrome (FFS, OMIM 134780), also known as femoral hypoplasia-unusual face syndrome, is a rare sporadic syndrome associated with maternal diabetes, and comprising femoral hypoplasia/agenesis and a distinct facies characterized by micrognathia, cleft palate, and other minor dysmorphisms. The evaluation of 14 unpublished Brazilian patients, prompted us to make an extensive literature review comparing both sets of data. From 120 previously reported individuals with FFS, 66 were excluded due to: not meeting the inclusion criteria (n = 21); not providing sufficient data to ascertain

Three-dimensional (3D) virtual facial models facilitate genotype-phenotype correlations and diagnostics in clinical dysmorphology. Within cross-sectional analysis of both genders we evaluated facial features in representative cohorts of Czech patients with Williams-Beuren-(WBS; 12 cases), Noonan-(NS; 14), and 22q11.2 deletion syndromes (22q11.2DS; 20) and compared their age-related developmental trajectories to 21 age, sex and ethnically matched controls in 3-18 years of age. Using geometric morphometry statistically significant differences in facial morphology were found in all cases compared

BACKGROUND: A persistent craniopharyngeal canal (PCC) is a rare cause of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea in children. The condition often coexists with other midline facial defects, such as cleft palate. Children with PCC may also have pituitary dysfunction or neoplasms, such as craniopharyngiomas within the canal.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year-old girl presented with bacterial meningitis and active cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea from her left nostril. Imaging showed a large nasopharyngeal meningoencephalocele, communicating with the subarachnoid space through a persistent craniopharyngeal canal.

Congenital nasal deformities can cause nasal obstruction with early respiratory distress. Choanal atresia is characterized by no communication between the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Pyriform aperture stenosis involves more anterior nasal obstruction with limited intranasal space. Nasal masses such as encephaloceles, gliomas, and dermoids are thought to be related through a skull base defect in utero. Imaging with computed tomography and MRI are helpful in distinguishing lesions and identifying intracranial communication. Nasolacrimal duct cysts can get infected and cause obstruction. Nasal

TARP syndrome (talipes equinovarus, atrial septal defect, Robin sequence, and persistence of the left superior vena cava) is a rare X-linked syndrome often resulting in pre- or post-natal lethality in affected males. In 2010, RBM10 was identified as the disease-causing gene, and we describe the first adult patient with TARP syndrome at age 28 years, hereby expanding the phenotypic spectrum. Our patient had Robin sequence, atrial septal defect, intellectual disability, scoliosis, and other findings previously associated with TARP syndrome. In addition, he had a prominent nose and nasal bridge,

BACKGROUND In cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients, the shape of the facial soft tissues shows variety in 3 dimensions (3D). Two-dimensional (2D) photographs and radiographs are insufficient in the examination of these anomalies. The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the soft tissue and craniofacial characteristics of individuals with nonsyndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP), skeletal Class III malocclusions, or skeletal Class I malocclusions using 3D facial imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS The entire study group consisted of a total o

Both children (one boy and one girl) experienced disease onset in infancy and visited the hospital due to growth retardation. They had unusual facies including thick hair, arched and confluent eyebrows, long and curly eyelashes, short nose, and micrognathia. Patient 1 had congenital heart disease (atrial septal defect and pulmonary stenosis) and special dermatoglyph (a single palmar crease). Patient 2 had cleft palate and moderate-to-severe deafness. Clinical features suggested Cornelia de Lange syndrome in both children. High-throughput sequencing was used to detect the seven known pathogenic

Neu-Laxova syndrome (NLS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by central nervous system anomalies, facial dysmorphic features, anomalies of limb and genitalia, intrauterine growth retardation, skin disorders, and other congenital abnormalities. In this article, we present a newborn infant who was born with facial dysmorphic features, flat nose, ichthyosis, rocker bottom feet, and fixed flexion contractures. We believe that these clinical findings in this patient are consistent with features of NLS.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) encompasses a group of autoantibody-mediated, subepithelial blistering diseases, which primarily affect mucosal surfaces including oral, ocular, skin, genital, nasopharyngeal and oesophageal sites. We present a first description of laryngoceles as a manifestation of mucous membrane pemphigoid resulting in dynamic airway closure. Mucosal injury at other sites had previously resulted in pathergy and localised cicatrisation. We discuss successful combined medical and transcutaneous surgical intervention designed to avoid tracheostomy and minimise iatrogenic laryng
