A Comprehensive Update of the Incidence and Demographics of Laryngoceles in Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To provide updated data on the incidence, types, and demographics of laryngoceles in the adult population. METHODS: We searched the medical archives of our institute for computed tomography (CT) studies acquired between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2017 in which the term "laryngocele" appeared in the radiology reports. Two of the authors reviewed relevant images for the presence, type, distribution, and laterality of true laryngoceles. Demographic and clinical data were extracted from medical records and the incidence was calculated. RESULTS: Laryngoceles were detected in 53 o

Laryngeal cleft: A literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal cleft is a congenital condition in which an opening in the posterior laryngotracheal wall allows food and liquid to pass from the esophageal lumen to the airway and causes aspiration. The severity of a laryngeal cleft is measured using the Benjamin-Inglis system, and can be managed conservatively or with a variety of surgical options With increased awareness, higher suspicion among primary physicians, advanced technology and improved intensive neonatal care services, more babies with laryngeal clefts survive in the modern era. Therefore, the focus has shifted from infan

Subglottic and tracheal stenosis associated with coronavirus disease 2019.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 critical care patients endure prolonged periods of intubation. Late tracheostomy insertion, large endotracheal tubes and high cuff pressures increase their risk of subglottic and tracheal stenosis. This patient cohort also often appears to have co-morbidities associated with laryngotracheal stenosis, including high body mass index and laryngopharyngeal reflux. METHODS: This paper presents three coronavirus disease 2019 patients who were intubated for a mean of 28 days before tracheostomy, leading to complex multi-level stenoses. RESULTS: All patients unde

Analysis of the clinical features of Japanese patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia.

OBJECTIVE: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare hereditary disease. Most reports of PCD in Japan are case reports, and clinical analysis has not been performed. Differences in the causative genes might affect the clinical features in different ethnic groups. The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical features of Japanese patients with PCD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of PCD patients seen at Mie University Hospital and patients whose blood samples were sent to us for genetic analysis from 2011 to 2020. Data on the following items were collected and analy

The natural history of laryngo-onycho-cutaneous syndrome: A case series of six pediatric patients and literature review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Laryngo-onycho-cutaneous syndrome (LOC) is a rare subtype of junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB), featuring aberrant granulation tissue formation in the skin, larynx, and eyes. So far, three mutations including the specific (founder) mutation in exon 39 of LAMA3 (c.151dup) have been identified, but sparse data exists regarding the natural history, the genotype-phenotype correlation, and its differentiation from other JEB types. METHODS: We reviewed our pediatric EB database to identify English children with clinical and genetically diagnosed LOC within the last 15 ye

[Clinical diagnosis and treatments of type Ⅱ-Ⅳ congenital laryngotracheoesophageal cleft in 8 children].

Objective: To investigate the clinical diagnosis and treatment of congenital laryngotracheoesophageal cleft (LTEC) in children. Methods: The clinical data of 8 children (including 7 males and 1 female)with congenital laryngotracheoesophageal cleft from January 2016 to June 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The median diagnosing age was 3.75 months (5 days to 12 months). According to the modified Benjamin Inglis classification proposed by Sandu in 2006,there were 3 cases of type Ⅱ, 3 cases of type Ⅲa, 1 case of type Ⅲb and 1 case of type Ⅳa. All children were followed up regularly. Results: S

Not Just Dyspnoea: Swallowing as a Concern for Adults with Laryngotracheal Stenosis Undergoing Airway Reconstruction.

Acquired laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) is a rare condition causing dyspnea and stridor. Patients often require multiple surgical procedures with no guarantee of a definitive outcome. Difficulty swallowing is a recognised problem associated with LTS and the reconstructive surgeries required to manage the condition. The breathlessness patient's experience impacts on swallowing, and the vulnerable structures of the larynx are implicated during complex surgeries. This leads to dysphagia post-surgery, with some patients experiencing more chronic symptoms depending on the biomechanical impact of th

Congenital airway anomalies.

Congenital airway anomalies (CAA) include a variety of conditions that cause respiratory distress in neonates and infants. These malformations occur at various anatomic levels and manifest in a wide spectrum of airway symptoms, with presentation significantly influenced by the level at which obstruction occurs as well as by the severity of obstruction. The prevalence of congenital airway malformations has been estimated to range between 0.2 and 1 in 10,000 live births. The most frequent CAA are laryngomalacia, bilateral vocal cord paralysis, subglottic stenosis, laryngeal webs, subglottic hema

Factors associated to functional recovery of left vocal fold motion impairment at two-years-old age in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a cohort of neonates with left vocal fold motion impairment (LVFMI) and the factors associated to it in the neonatal period; procedures required during LVFMI treatment; and clinical outcomes at the age of 2-years. An additional objective was to study those factors which are likely to be most associated to functional recovery of LVFMI at this age. METHODS: A cohort of patients born in a tertiary care hospital with a diagnosis of left VFMI was included. Factors registered were: gender; clinical presentation at the time of examination; diagnosis of other laryngeal defects

Congenital Neck Masses.

Congenital neck masses (CNMs) are developmental malformations that present with a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms and signs. They account for 21% to 45% of neck masses in children and 5% to 14% in adults. This study aimed to present the clinical manifestations and treatment of CNM from single-institution experiences. A retrospective analysis of patients surgically treated for CNM in a 12-year period was performed. Altogether, 117 patients (female/male ratio, 1:1.05) were diagnosed with CNM. The mean age at presentation was 26.91 years (range, 0.01-84 years). Within the study population, 120

Blunt Trauma to the Neck Presenting as Dysphonia and Dysphagia in a Healthy Young Woman; A Rare Case of Traumatic Laryngocele.

Laryngocele is not a common clinical entity that presents itself in a trauma setting. In the literature, there are currently two types of laryngocele, internal and mixed. Laryngocele may be congenital or acquired, and most often will present later in life. Traumatic laryngocele has only been reported three times in the literature before. Herein, we report a rare case of a 22-year-old woman who presents with bilateral laryngocele secondary to sustained direct trauma. Neck Ct-scan revealed bilateral laryngocele being responsible for her dysphagia and dysphonia. She was monitored in the hospital

An unusual cause of infant's stridor - congenital laryngocele.

Congenital laryngocele is an uncommon cause of neonatal stridor. There are only a few cases reported in the literature. The authors present a successfully treated case of an infant, whose life could only be saved by urgent tracheostomy. On the 5th postoperative day endoscopic excision and marsupialization provided patent airway. The patient could be decannulated. During follow-up no recurrence was observed.

Terminology, Definitions, and Classification in the Imaging of Laryngoceles.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to better define the anatomy, criteria, and classification of laryngoceles, and to raise the awareness to potential mimickers and anatomical variants leading to misdiagnosis. METHODS: A retrospective review of all computed tomography studies, performed over a decade, with the diagnosis of "laryngocele" in the radiological report in a tertiary medical center. All relevant studies were reviewed by two independent readers for the presence of true laryngoceles. RESULTS: One hundred and twelve patients were included; average age was 54 (±18). Imaging of Pharyngocele: An Occupational Overuse Syndrome.

Pharyngocele is a rare pathology of the pharynx caused by the laxity of the thyrohyoid membrane. Only about 60 true lateral pharyngocele cases have been reported in the literature over the last 133 years. Laryngocele is a close differential, and the two are difficult to tell apart. Though they have been described well in the literature, they are often misdiagnosed or interchangeably diagnosed. The acquired type of pharyngocele is due to prolonged increased intrapharyngeal pressure and pharyngeal wall weakness, and it is more common than congenital pharyngoceles. Close differential diagnoses in
