OBJECTIVE: To analyze the causes and the clinical characteristics of the neonatal inspiratory dyspnea; so to raise the diagnosis and cure rate of the disease.
METHODS: Eleven new born infants with severe inspiratory dyspnea were investigated from March, 2001 to June, 2004 in Shenzhen children's hospital. Six infants were male and 5 were female. The average age was 7.2 days ( range from 8 hours to 28 days). Four cases were hospitalized with trachea intubation. Three of them can not cry, and 2 cases were diagnosed as bilateral vocal cord paralysis, 1 case as multiple cranial nerve palsy with di

We present a case of laryngeal oncocytic cysts presenting as bilateral laryngoceles and surgical emphysema of the neck. Although there is a rare, but well-documented association of laryngoceles with laryngeal carcinoma, coexistence with another laryngeal pathology is less well reported.

A laryngocele is a cystic dilatation of the laryngeal saccule. The etiology of laryngoceles is unclear, but congenital and acquired factors are considered to play a role in their development. An acquired laryngocele may develop when the laryngeal ventricle becomes functionally obstructed as a result of an increase in intraglottic pressure, such as that caused by excessive coughing, playing a wind instrument, glass blowing or obstruction of appendicular ostium. We present a case of laryngocele in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis. To the authors' knowledge, and from a review of the literatu

The most common cause of a neck mass that increases in size on the Valsalva maneuver is laryngocele. Jugular phlebectasia is a congenital dilation of the jugular vein, which is extremely rare in adults, may present similarly. Duplication of the internal jugular vein (IJV), which is usually encountered coincidentally, is another rare anatomic variation. Isolated cases or cases associated with IJV ectasia have been reported. We report on an adult patient with coexisting external jugular phlebectasia and internal jugular duplication on the same side.

The abnormal dilatation of saccules in direct communication with the laryngeal lumen is termed laryngocele. A simple laryngocele is an air-filled dilatation of the saccule and is mostly asymptomatic. When the neck of the laryngocele is obstructed, the laryngocele becomes filled with mucus. If a mucus-filled laryngocele is infected, it is called a laryngopyocele. The etiology of laryngoceles is not well understood. However, there is an association between laryngoceles and carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx. The main reasons are probably obstruction and mucosal retention of the saccule, increa

Options in the management of laryngoceles include observation, endoscopic resection, and resection via an external approach. We introduce a combined endoscopic and external approach that we have employed on several occasions to ensure complete removal of the laryngocele and the saccule from which it originated. A case is presented to help define the technique.

Orbital emphysema (OE) is usually the result of a fracture of lamina papyrecea or maxillary roof allowing air to pass from the sinuses into the orbit. OE without evidence of any significant trauma is a rare occurrence. Thorough literature search revealed that no case of OE due to the rupture of internal laryngocele has been reported. A case is reported here of bilateral orbitopalpebral emphysema associated with internal laryngocele, in the absence of facial skeleton trauma, in a healthy young adult male. It should be kept in mind that laryngocele rupture would be one of the underlying causes o

A laryngocele is an abnormal dilatation of the laryngeal saccule. The relationship between layngoceles and laryngeal carcinoma is still debated. We present the case of a 45-year-old male patient with bilateral asymptomatic laryngocele and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. We discuss the possible etiopathogenetic influence of increased intralaryngeal pressure with preoperative CT and explorative findings, and the current literature is reviewed.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) is present in a number of hypothalamic nuclei. Besides actions in circuits regulating feeding behaviour and stress responses, the hypothalamic functions of CART are largely unknown. We report that CART immunoreactivity is present in hypothalamic neuroendocrine neurones. Adult male rats received a systemic injection of the neuronal tracer Fluorogold (FG) 2 days before fixation, and subsequent double- and triple-labelling immunoflourescence analysis demonstrated that neuroendocrine CART-containing neurones were present in the anteroventral per

Laryngocele may be defined as an abnormal dilatation of the saccule of the ventricle and its pathogenesis is uncertain. We report a laryngocele caused by amyloidosis localized to larynx in a 60-year-old male patient. We would like to mention that amyloidosis should be evaluated in the etiology of patients diagnosed as having a laryngocele.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the incidence of laryngocele in patients with laryngeal cancer and in healthy controls and evaluated the role of laryngocele in neck metastasis and thyroid cartilage invasion.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The incidence of laryngocele was investigated by computed tomography (CT) preoperatively in 52 patients (49 men, 3 women; mean age 56 years; range 36 to 79 years) with laryngeal cancer. The findings were compared with those of histopathologic studies; moreover, neck metastasis and thyroid cartilage invasion were sought. In addition, the incidence of laryngocele was exami

OBJECTIVE: To report on the management of laryngoceles by CO2 laser-assisted endoscopic excision.
STUDY DESIGN: A 15-year retrospective study of 12 adult patients (7 men and 5 women) who presented with a laryngocele. Nine patients had an internal laryngocele, one patient had an external laryngocele, and two patients had combined internal-external components. Two laryngoceles were right-sided, six were left-sided, and four were bilateral.
METHODS: An endoscopic examination of the laryngocele was carried out for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Once identified the air- or mucus-filled

A 28-year-old trumpet player underwent multiple treatments with radioactive iodine for Graves disease associated with an unusually large goiter. Following his second treatment, the patient developed acute neck pain and swelling. Radiographic studies and a laryngoscopy demonstrated bilateral symptomatic external laryngoceles, a very rare entity, not previously known to be associated with radioiodine treatment or Graves disease. The patient's profession placed him at risk for the development of a laryngocele, but the temporal relationship to goiter regression following radioiodine therapy sugges

Benign mesenchymal tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract are very rare. In this localisation some tumors cause life-threatening upper airway obstruction. We report on a 42-year old man who complained dysphagia and globus sensation. The physical examination revealed a smooth tumor of the left aryepiglottic fold. A magnet resonance imaging (MRI) leaded to the suspicion of a laryngocele with extension in the left aryepiglottic fold. The therapeutical procedure included the microlaryngoscopical extirpation of the tumor with laser surgery. The histology showed a fibrolipoma of the larynx. Because

A music medicine practice affords a unique opportunity to diagnose and treat laryngeal music performers. Strobovideolaryngoscopic (SVL) and external video examination of the voice professional or brass instrument player may focus on the vocal folds, yet abnormalities of the supraglottis, neck, and thorax should be appreciated and documented. Laryngoceles are uncommon laryngeal disorders but may occur in up to 5% of benign laryngeal lesions. While many laryngoceles are asymptomatic, they may cause a cough, hoarseness, stridor, sore throat, pain, snoring, or globus sensation. In particular, musi

The laryngocele is a benign air-filled dilatation of the saccule of the laryngeal ventricle. Its appearance may be related to increased intralaryngeal pressure due to chronic straining. The internal laryngocele is confined to the false vocal cord, and it does not pass through the thyrohyoid membrane. The most common symptoms for internal laryngocele are hoarseness and dysphagia. Large internal laryngoceles may also cause airway compromise, especially when complicated with infection. Endoscopic laser surgery is an acceptable mode of treatment even for large internal laryngoceles as in the prese

In laryngeal mucocele, Morgagni's ventricle fills with mucous resulting from proliferation of the innner glandular epithelium and simultaneous closure of the ventricular opening. In making a diagnosis, the physician must first rule out any underlying neoplasm in Morgagni's ventricle which would give rise to a secondary mucocele. The present work reports a clinical case which came under observation because of cough, dysphonia and swelling of the left ventricular band with normal motility of the true vocal cords. CT of the neck, performed with contrast medium and axial scanning, showed a solid n
