Laryngoceles and saccular cysts, which are abnormal dilatations of the laryngeal saccule, are uncommon. The etiology is unknown but is probably related to both congenital and acquired factors. These structures are usually asymptomatic and are incidentally discovered through radiographic studies for unrelated symptoms. We describe two patients with upper airway obstruction, one caused by a giant laryngocele and the other by a large saccular cyst. In the former patient, acute tracheotomy had to be performed. The laryngocele and saccular cyst were removed surgically, which relieved patients' symp

We present a case report of a lady with a laryngocele and a squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The pathogenesis of the relationship between these two entities is discussed and the literature reviewed. This association means a carcinoma must be outruled if a laryngocele is detected clinically or radiologically.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical excision of benign submucosal lesions of the larynx can be performed using a variety of techniques including direct laryngoscopy and external approaches. We propose that small submucosal lesions of the larynx can be removed via the external approach without a tracheotomy.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Six patients at The Long Island Jewish Medical Center and at the New York University School of Medicine underwent an external approach for the removal of benign submucosal laryngeal lesions without tracheotomies. Lesions included a mixed laryngopyoce

Laryngocele is an unusual laryngeal disease caused by an abnormal dilatation of the saccule of the laryngeal ventricule. Infection results in laryngopyocele. We report a case of laryngopyocele discovered in a patient presenting with fever, an inflammatory mass, dysphagia and minimal respiratory distress. Diagnosis was established from direct laryngoscopy and CT-scan. Early treatment consisted in antibiotics and needle aspiration followed by external excision. Laryngopyocele can sometimes be revealed by an episode of acute respiratory distress requiring tracheotomy. If there is no respiratory d

Respiratory disorders are common and important complications in acromegaly. Patients suffering from acromegaly display a 1.6-3.3 fold increase in mortality rate, which is due to respiratory disorders in 25% of cases. In these patients, mortality for lung disease is 2-3 fold higher than in the general population. Every portion of the respiratory system may be involved. Deformities of facial bones, edema and hypertrophy of the mucosae and pharyngeal and laryngeal cartilages, enlargement of the tongue and inspiratory collapse of the hypopharinx, all may contribute to respiratory alterations. A laryngocele is an air-filled dilation of the saccule of the larynx. An infected laryngocele is called a laryngopyocele. Our experience with a case of laryngopyocele with signs on computed tomography before and after antibiotic therapy is presented since laryngopyocele is more unusual.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the results of using a lateral thyrotomy approach on the paraglottic space to gain greater access for laryngocele resection under direct vision.
STUDY DESIGN: A 26-year prospective and retrospective study. The study was conducted on 10 adult patients (5 men and 5 women) who had laryngocele of varying size on the paraglottic space. Six of the patients had internal laryngocele and four had exteriorized laryngocele. Five laryngoceles were left-sided, three were right-sided, and two were bilateral.
METHODS: A V-shaped, full-thickness thyroid lamina resection with the tria

We describe a patient with a history of psychiatric disorder who was brought to our hospital after attempted suicide by hanging. Severe subcutaneous facial, palpebral and cervical emphysema was present, with dysphonia, dysphagia and slight respiratory difficulty. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed upper airway obstruction due to edema in an intact airway. Successive CAT scans gave evidence of hyoid fracture and laryngocele, in addition to the corresponding emphysema of the subcutaneous area and pneumomediastinum. Given the persistence of dysphagia, we ordered esophageal tests, which showed funct

The clinical and radiological differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the submandibular region can be difficult. We report an unusual case of a submandibular salivary duct cyst mimicking an external laryngocele on presentation by appearing to expand on Valsalva manoeuvre, and where computed tomography (CT) scanning was unhelpful in reaching a diagnosis. We present the case, discuss the theories of pathogenesis, and review the literature on the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions in the submandibular region.

Laryngoceles represent dilatations of the laryngeal saccule that may extend internally into the airway, or externally through the thyrohyoid membrane. Unilateral laryngoceles are uncommon clinical entities and bilateral laryngoceles are rare. Certain activities like glass blowing and playing a wind instrument are associated with laryngocele development, as is laryngeal carcinoma in the ventricular area. This case describes development of bilateral laryngoceles in a patient who chronically uses ventricular phonation during speech. The pathogenesis involves repetitive elevation of intralaryngeal

The most common cause of a neck mass that increases in size on straining is laryngocele. Internal jugular phlebectasia, which is of unknown cause, may present similarly. We present three cases of internal jugular phlebectasia, all of whom were asthmatic children. This association of asthma and internal jugular phlebectasia has not been reported previously.

Laryngopyocele is a fairly rare disease. It is a complication of laryngocele. Its clinical picture is often alarming; thus it needs fast differential diagnosis. Computed tomography allows early diagnosis. Surgical treatment permits a complete recovery. An association between laryngocele and carcinoma of the larynx has been reported by some authors. Three new cases of laryngopyocele are presented and discussed.

Adenolymphoma is a benign monomorphic lesion composed of epithelial tissue. Usually it is found in parotid gland; however, its laryngeal occurrence was rarely described. Extraparotid Warthin's tumour as scanty lymphatic tissue. In cases when there is no lymphatic tissue in subepithelial layer it is called oncocytic cystadenoma. The authors describe the case of bifocal adenolymphoma in bilateral laryngocoele and indicate classification difficulties of oncocytic lesions in the larynx.

Both laryngocele and laryngeal amyloidosis are uncommon, and simultaneous occurrences of these entities are extremely rare. A case of laryngeal amyloidosis with laryngocele in which the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the larynx, clearly demonstrating both disease processes, is discussed. Diagnosis is confirmed by histopathologic specimens. Only two cases have been reported in the world literature, and this is the third case of laryngeal amyloidosis associated with laryngocele.

It is commonly believed that external laryngoceles always penetrate the thyrohyoid membrane at the site of penetration of the neurovascular bundle. We present a case where the site of penetration was posterosuperior to this. Careful dissection of the neck of a laryngocele sac is important to prevent damage to the neurovascular bundle.

Phlebectasia is an abnormal dilatation of an isolated vein, may affect any vein, and is usually asymptomatic. When the internal jugular vein is involved, it presents as a cervical swelling that can mimic the signs of either pharyngocele or a laryngocele and, because of its rarity, is frequently misdiagnosed. We describe 2 cases of phlebectasia of internal jugular vein in children with voice change in one of them. No treatment is necessary for this benign, self-limiting condition. Clinical features, diagnosis, treatment options, and a review of the literature about this rare venous lesion are p

We present a rare case of unilateral phlebectasia of the anterior jugular vein in a 56-year-old male patient whose complaint is a neck swelling that appears during talking. Although in this age group the most common cause of such a mass in the anterior aspect of the neck increasing in size during any type of straining or Valsalva manoeuvre is a laryngocele, phlebectasia of the anterior jugular vein should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Doppler ultrasound and computed tomography are the most useful and non-invasive methods to use for the investigation. Treatment should be conserva
