Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) encompasses a group of autoantibody-mediated, subepithelial blistering diseases, which primarily affect mucosal surfaces including oral, ocular, skin, genital, nasopharyngeal and oesophageal sites. We present a first description of laryngoceles as a manifestation of mucous membrane pemphigoid resulting in dynamic airway closure. Mucosal injury at other sites had previously resulted in pathergy and localised cicatrisation. We discuss successful combined medical and transcutaneous surgical intervention designed to avoid tracheostomy and minimise iatrogenic laryng

Laryngocele is rare; it is an abnormal dilatation of the laryngeal appendix or of the Morgagni's ventricular pouch. Its size is variable. When it is small, it is usually asymptomatic. When it is large, it can manifest as a cervical anterolateral paralaryngeal mass. Diagnosis is based on CT scan. Treatment approach is still discussed. Endoscopic CO2 laser treatment has aroused great interest in recent years. We here report the clinical observation of a 24-year old woman with a 4-year history of intermittent dyspnea. Endoscopic examination showed an increase in the bulge of the right ventricular

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to document and describe a case of a laryngeal pilar cyst and to review the literature.
METHODS: We describe the case of a 65-year-old woman with a laryngeal pilar cyst presenting with occasional ear pain and positional dyspnea, with imaging studies suggesting external/internal laryngocele. We also review the existing clinical literature.
RESULTS: Pilar cysts are adnexal skin lesions most commonly found in the scalp of elderly women. They generally have a benign course, but in rare instances single or multiple foci of proliferating cells can lead to the neoplasti

AIM: The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the sonographic appearance of neck tumors and determining the features useful in differential diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The studied group consisted of 57 patients: 16 patients with carotid body tumors, 9 patients with neurogenic tumors, 8 patients with venous anomalies, 12 patients with neck cysts, 6 patients with lipomas, 5 patients with extracranial carotid artery aneurysms and 1 with a laryngocele.
RESULTS: All carotid paragangliomas were located within the carotid bifurcation and demonstrated rich low-resistance vascular flow, wi

BACKGROUND: Recently, the focus of family planning programs has changed from female oriented to men oriented, or both partner oriented to have effective outcomes. Although, contraceptive use among sexually active women was exhaustively researched; there is still a huge gap on modern contraceptive use and its determinants among sexually active men in Ethiopia.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed the determinants of contraceptive use among sexually active men in Ethiopia using national survey data.
METHOD: The data source for this study was the 2016's Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey of men aged ab

Laryngocele (LC) is an uncommon clinical entity, occasionally associated with fatal complications. If its neck becomes obstructed, mucous accumulates and then a laryngeal mucocele (LMC) is formed. Reports of LMCs are rare in the literature. A fluid-filled combined LMC in a 48 year-old Greek construction worker with presenting symptoms of cervical swelling and dysphonia is described. The male patient was surgically treated via an external approach. A LC rarely becomes symptomatic and infection unusually occurs. Magnetic resonance imaging depicts in detail the size, extension and structure of th

A laryngocele is an abnormal dilatation of the laryngeal saccule. It is a rare benign lesion of the larynx. Various modalities of treatment have been advocated for its management. We present our treatment results and outcomes of a series of cases of laryngoceles and discuss the concepts of their management. This study included patients with different laryngocele types. Patients with an internal laryngocele underwent endoscopic CO2 laser resection, while those with a combined laryngocele underwent resection via a V-shaped lateral thyrotomy approach. Seven patients had an internal laryngocele, a

Objective Laryngeal cysts may occur at any mucosa-lined location within the larynx and account for 5% to 10% of nonmalignant laryngeal lesions. A number of proposed classifications for laryngeal cysts exist; however, no previously published classification aims to guide management. This review analyzes contemporary laryngeal cyst management and proposes a framework for the terminology and management of cystic lesions in the larynx. Data Sources PubMed/Medline. Review Methods A primary literature search of the entire Medline database was performed for all titles of publications pertaining to lar

INTRODUCTION: Pyolaryngocele is a very rare and serious complication of laryngocele. It can present as deep neck space infection and mislead the diagnosis. Our aim is to bring this unusual entity to the attention of surgeons and describe its clinical features.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 45-year-old male patient with a five-week history of neck swelling, dysphonia, dyspnea and odynophagia. An urgent CT scan showed a mixed pyolaryngocele. The management consisted of a high dose antibiotic and an excision of the residual laryngocele via an external approach.
CONCLUSION: A pyolaryngocele

OBJECTIVE: To describe risk factors, clinical presentation, and outcome of patients with saccular disorders.
STUDY DESIGN: Case control with chart review METHODS: A single center retrospective study. Case group included all adult patients, presenting with saccular disorders (saccular cyst or laryngocele), between the years 2010 and 2015. A matched group of patients with vocal fold cyst served as the control.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients met the inclusion criteria: 15 males and 14 females; the mean age was 60.5(±11.2). The median follow-up period was 10 months (range 2-48). Overall, 75.9% (2

BACKGROUND: Air travel mostly causes minor ear, nose and throat complaints. We describe a second report in literature of airway obstruction caused by a drop in atmospheric pressure during a routine commercial flight.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male was referred to a head and neck surgeon with a 2 cm left submandibular mass that would enlarge during commercial flights. As the plane gained elevation, the mass would grow and cause him to become stridorous and short of breath. The shortness of breath and stridor would only resolve upon landing of the plane. A CT scan showed a large air sac

We present a rare, and to the best of our knowledge, previously unreported complication of the spontaneous rupture of an internal laryngocele after a routine neck dissection for metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. While this caused some diagnostic confusion, the patient was managed conservatively with no further complications.

A 68-year-old man was referred to the Department of Otolaryngology because of a swelling of his neck and hoarseness. CT imaging of his neck revealed a cystic mass in the larynx as well as in the neck, with an air-fluid level. The diagnosis 'laryngopyocele' was made.

We experienced two rare cases with laryngeal cystic lesions (laryngocele and laryngeal cyst). In the first case, the laryngocele case was removed by laryngomicrosurgery using an oral approach under general anesthesia. In the second case, the magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a dumbbell-type cyst with mucus widely extending from the laryngeal lumen to the neck through the thyroid cartilage. The patient had undergone chemotherapy for renal carcinoma with multiple lung and bone metastases. Therefore, we performed only fine needle aspiration rather than aggressive surgery for extirpation of

OBJECTIVES: Laryngoceles are air-filled sacs which communicate with the laryngeal lumen. When filled with mucus or pus, they are called laryngomucoceles and laryngopyoceles, respectively. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a new and remarkable technique that expands its usefullness in otorhinolaryngology. Conventional treatments for laryngoceles were previously performed using external approaches, with aesthetically unfavorable and less function-sparing results. Transoral laser microsurgical approaches for laryngoceles were seldom reported. It is aimed to present authors' clinical experience
