Tracheal bronchus and associated pathologies detected by multidetector-row computed tomography in the Vietnamese population.

Tracheal bronchus (TB) is a very rare condition, which is often associated with some other pathologies. This study was designed to characterize the morphology of tracheal bronchus and associated pathologies in Vietnamese individuals using multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT). From August 2016 to February 2021, 16, 64-, and 128-detector-row computed tomography scanners were used to perform chest scans of 3663 patients, of whom 32 had tracheal bronchus and associated pathologies. The prevalence of tracheal bronchus was 0.9%, of which 0.6% were male and 0.3% were female. We found that one

Airway anomalies in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: People with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) can present with a wide variety of findings. Various airway anomalies have been described intermittently within this syndrome, but this feature has not been extensively investigated. Increased provider awareness of these findings may help guide clinical decision-making and improve overall patient outcomes. The objectives of this review are to identify the types of airway anomalies in 22q11DS and the prevalence of airway anomalies within symptomatic individuals. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases were searc

Retrospective evaluation of clinical and molecular data of 148 cases of esophageal atresia.

Developmental abnormalities provide a unique opportunity to seek for the molecular mechanisms underlying human organogenesis. Esophageal development remains incompletely understood and elucidating causes for esophageal atresia (EA) in humans would contribute to achieve a better comprehension. Prenatal detection, syndromic classification, molecular diagnosis, and prognostic factors in EA are challenging. Some syndromes have been described to frequently include EA, such as CHARGE, EFTUD2-mandibulofacial dysostosis, Feingold syndrome, trisomy 18, and Fanconi anemia. However, no molecular diagnosi

Swallowing-related quality of life in children with oesophageal atresia: a national cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Swallowing and feeding disorders are a major concern for children with oesophageal atresia (OA) after primary or staged OA repair. Primary OA repair is associated with higher rates of short-term complications in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) or extreme low birth weight (ELBW). On the other hand, primary repair may have the benefit of early commencement of oral feedings. We hypothesize that also in the medium-term, swallowing-related quality of life is better after primary oesophageal repair. We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study on swallowing quality

Dynamic Volumetric Computed Tomography Angiography is an Effective Method to Evaluate Tracheomalacia in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Standard methods to evaluate tracheal pathology in children, including bronchoscopy, may require general anesthesia. Conventional dynamic proximal airway imaging in noncooperative children requires endotracheal intubation and/or medically induced apnea, which may affect airway mechanics and diagnostic performance. We describe a technique for unsedated dynamic volumetric computed tomography angiography (DV-CTA) of the proximal airway and surrounding vasculature in children and evaluate its performance compared to the reference-standard of rigid bronchoscopy. METHODS: Children who ha

Tracheobronchomalacia and Excessive Dynamic Airway Collapse: Current Concepts and Future Directions.

Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) and excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) are airway abnormalities that share a common feature of expiratory narrowing but are distinct pathophysiologic entities. Both entities are collectively referred to as expiratory central airway collapse (ECAC). The malacia or weakness of cartilage that supports the tracheobronchial tree may occur only in the trachea (ie, tracheomalacia), in both the trachea and bronchi (TBM), or only in the bronchi (bronchomalacia). On the other hand, EDAC refers to excessive anterior bowing of the posterior membrane into the airway lumen

Paediatric tracheobronchomalacia: Incidence, patient characteristics, and predictors of surgical intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM), a condition where an abnormality of the tracheal walls causes collapse during the respiratory cycle, is a common cause of airway obstruction in childhood. TBM can present with a large spectrum of disease severity and underlying pathologies that may be managed medically and surgically, and it is not always clear which patients would most benefit from surgical intervention. We aim to describe the incidence, patient characteristics, and predictors of surgical intervention in a large cohort of paediatric patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective revi

A New Removable Helical Metallic Stent for the Treatment of Tracheomalacia in Children: Study in Pathological Animal Model.

BACKGROUND: Congenital tracheomalacia is a pathology with no consensus of medical or surgical approach. The permanent nature and the major complications associated with metallic stents have limited their use over the years. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a helical stent design removal. METHODS: Ten dogs diagnosed with tracheal collapse and treated with the helical stent were involved in the study. Animals were classified into three groups depending on stent indwelling time. Prior to the removal, endoscopic evaluation was performed to assess endothelization grade,

Perioperative Management of an Adolescent Fontan Patient with Narrowing of the Aortopulmonary Space for Posterior Scoliosis Surgery.

Congenital cardiac patients who received neonatal reconstructive aortic arch surgery are at risk of aortopulmonary space narrowing with compression of the left pulmonary artery and left main bronchus (LMB) later in life. We discuss a challenging adolescent single ventricle patient who presented for surgical treatment of a non-idiopathic thoracic scoliosis (posterior spinal fusion) with severe stenosis of the LMB and left pulmonary artery due to a narrow aortopulmonary space. Careful preoperative imaging, evaluation, and decision making resulted in successful surgical treatment and uneventful p
