Epidemiological feature of imported malaria in Taiwan during the 2014-to-2020 period.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) certified Taiwan as being malaria-free in 1965, there are reports of a few imported cases each year by travelers who visit malaria-endemic areas. This study examined the epidemiology of imported malaria cases in Taiwan from 2014 to 2020, utilizing national surveillance data from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. Malaria cases were confirmed through the application of standard laboratory methods. Passenger data came from the Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communication, Taiwan (TBMTC). All data were analyzed using SPSS version 2

Imported plasmodium ovale malaria from Côte d'Ivoire: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant global health issue, with an estimated 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths reported in 2023. Plasmodium ovale, although less common than P. falciparum and P. vivax, presents diagnostic challenges due to its morphological resemblance to P. vivax and its ability to form latent liver-stage hypnozoites, leading to delayed relapses. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 29-year-old male who presented with fever, chills, and myalgia upon returning to Bogotá, Colombia, after a three-month stay in Côte d'Ivoire, Africa. Initial microscopy misidenti

A case of severe Plasmodium ovale malaria with acute respiratory distress syndrome and splenic infarction in a male traveller presenting in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale malaria is usually considered a tropical infectious disease associated with low morbidity and mortality. However, severe disease and death have previously been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of severe P. ovale malaria in a healthy Caucasian man with a triangle splenic infarction and clinical progression towards Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome was reported despite a rapid response to oral chloroquine treatment with 24-h parasitaemia clearance. CONCLUSION: Plasmodium ovale malaria is generally considered as a benign disease, with low parasitaemia. However,

Challenging diagnosis of Plasmodium ovale malaria in a Colombian traveler: the importance of including P. ovale wallikeri in molecular screening.

This study reports a challenging diagnosis of Plasmodium ovale malaria in a Colombian citizen returning from Cameroon. Initial microscopy screenings conducted at two private hospitals yielded conflicting results, with the first showing negative smears and the second diagnosing P. vivax. Subsequent microscopy examinations at two government laboratories identified P. ovale, although the routine species-specific PCR strategy was negative. PCR confirmation was finally obtained when P. ovale wallikeri primers were used. Although P. ovale is not frequently found in Colombia, there is a clear need to

Plasmodium ovale Malaria in Travelers and Immigrants to the United States: A Case Series.

Malaria in child travelers caused by Plasmodium ovale spp. is less well characterized than malaria due to other Plasmodium species. Commonly used diagnostic tests often lack adequate sensitivity to identify P. ovale spp., and a missed diagnosis may have serious consequences. We present a case series of eight children in the United States with P. ovale malaria, all of whom had traveled to or immigrated from malaria-endemic areas. Two children developed clinical malaria, including one with severe malaria; two had isolated splenomegaly; and four were asymptomatic siblings of the children with spl

Plasmodium Ovale Malaria: Endemic Areas in Indonesia.

Plasmodium ovale consists of two subspecies - P. ovale wallikeri and P. ovale curtisi. Increased reports of imported malaria ovale in non-endemic regions and mixed infection of P. ovale with other Plasmodium species suggest that P. ovale might be under-detected during routine surveillance. Areas endemic with P. ovale have mostly been reported in African and Western Pacific countries. A recent case report in Indonesia indicated that regions with P. ovale endemicity are not only distributed in Lesser Sunda and Papua, but also in North Sumatra.

Plasmodium ovale infection in Sri Lanka: distant exposure and incidental detection of hyperparasitemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale malaria, which was previously endemic to tropical Africa and the Southwest Pacific islands is now being reported from parts of Asia. In Sri Lanka, the indigenous transmission of malaria has not been documented since October 2012. Since then, there have been several imported cases of malaria, including P. ovale, which have been detected sporadically. The reporting case of P. ovale was imported and detected incidentally in 2021, with several atypical presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old Sri Lankan medical doctor developed continuous fever with chills, rig

Relapse of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale Malaria With and Without Primaquine Treatment in a Nonendemic Area.

BACKGROUND: The effect of primaquine in preventing Plasmodium vivax relapses from dormant stages is well established. For Plasmodium ovale, the relapse characteristics and the use of primaquine is not as well studied. We set to evaluate the relapsing properties of these 2 species, in relation to primaquine use among imported malaria cases in a nonendemic setting. METHODS: We performed a nationwide retrospective study of malaria diagnosed in Sweden 1995-2019, by reviewing medical records of 3254 cases. All episodes of P. vivax (n = 972) and P. ovale (n = 251) were selected for analysis. RESUL

Prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDd) and clinical implication for safe use of primaquine in malaria-endemic areas of Hainan Province, China.

Primaquine, the only licensed antimalarial drug for eradication of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale malaria, may cause acute hemolytic anemia in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDd) during treatment. The different prevalence and distribution patterns of G6PDd in Hainan, the ancient malaria-endemic area, are unclear. This study included 5,622 suspected malaria patients between 2009 and 2011 in 11 counties of Hainan. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency prevalence was determined using the fluorescent spot test (FST) and malaria patients was confirmed

Macrophage renewal modes affect acquired resistance to gefitinib in EGFR‑mutant lung cancer PC‑9 cells.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies documented the problem of inbreeding among Italian Greyhounds (IG) from the USA and its possible role in a multiple autoimmune disease syndrome. The present study is an extension of these earlier experiments and had two objectives: 1) to identify pockets of additional genetic diversity that might still exist among IG from the USA and Continental Europe, and 2) to determine how loss of genetic diversity within the genome and in the dog leukocyte antigen (DLA) complex relates to the problem of autoimmune disease in IG from the USA. Genetic testing was conducted using

A Difficult Diagnosis of Plasmodium ovale Malaria.

Malaria is a major cause of suffering, disease, and death worldwide and is considered the most important of all human parasitic diseases. Malaria is still endemic in most tropical and sub-tropical areas and globalization has contributed to an increase of imported cases around the world. We report a Plasmodium ovale infection in a traveler with recent return from a long land trip across West Africa. He declared adherence to mefloquine chemoprophylaxis only at the start of the trip. Initially, he was seen at two different hospitals and in both he was screened for malaria by microscopy and rapid

A Cluster of Plasmodium ovale Infections in Belgian Military Personnel after Deployment in Kindu, Democratic Republic of Congo: A Retrospective Study.

Plasmodium ovale malaria is often neglected due to its less severe course compared to Plasmodium falciparum. In 2011-2012, Belgian Armed Forces identified a cluster of P. ovale cases among military personnel after deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In this retrospective, monocentric, observational study, clinical and biological features of soldiers diagnosed with P. ovale after deployment in DRC were reviewed. Species diagnosis was based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and/or thick blood smear. Medical records of 149 soldiers screened at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital

COVID-19 and Plasmodium ovale Malaria: A Rare Case of Co-Infection.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a major health problem worldwide. Timely diagnosis of co-infections mimicking COVID-19, such as malaria, might be challenging particularly in non-endemic areas. We report the first case of COVID-19 and Plasmodium ovale malaria co-infection from our region aiming to highligt the importance of travel history and prophylaxis in malaria management in the context of pandemic. The galloping sound can sometimes be a harbinger of zebra besides the horse.

Rapid diagnostic tests for Plasmodium vivax malaria in endemic countries.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax (P vivax) is a focus of malaria elimination. It is important because P vivax and Plasmodium falciparum infection are co-endemic in some areas. There are asymptomatic carriers of P vivax, and the treatment for P vivax and Plasmodium ovale malaria differs from that used in other types of malaria. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) will help distinguish P vivax from other malaria species to help treatment and elimination. There are RDTs available that detect P vivax parasitaemia through the detection of P vivax-specific lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) antigens. OBJECTIVES: To
