Pulmonary sequestration is an important yet often overlooked congenital lung malformation in adolescent medicine characterized by dysplastic, non-functioning pulmonary tissue that lacks communication with the tracheobronchial tree and derives its blood supply from an anomalous systemic artery. We report the case of a 12-year-old female patient referred to our institute with a six-month history of intermittent fever, cough, and chest pain, initially managed as a case of right-sided pneumonia elsewhere. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the thorax revealed a cavitary soft tissue lesion in

INTRODUCTION: Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) related to tracheobronchial remnant (TBR) is an extremely rare malformation, typically diagnosed in infants and young children. Endoscopic dilatation or resection and anastomosis are both accepted therapeutic options, but the superiority of one versus the other remains controversial.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed and MEDLINE using standardized search terms and subject headings from 1969 onwards. Inclusion criteria were patient age 0-18 years, confirmed diagnosis of CES due to TBR, English language, interven

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal lung is a rare and complex congenital malformation, in which the bronchus of one or several pulmonary lobes arises from the esophagus. It is frequently associated with other malformations. Surgical management needs individual approaches, is often complex and depends on concomitant disorders.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-month-old male was referred for further management of a left lower esophageal pulmonary lobe associated with a laryngotracheal cleft, congenital heart disease, heterotaxy, medialized stomach with additional microgastria and severe gastroesophageal reflux lead

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 17q23.1-q23.2 deletion syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by various congenital defects, including microcephaly, heart and lung defects, limb abnormalities, and mild-to-severe developmental delay. Respiratory distress and severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) are possible initial symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of full-term neonates with respiratory distress presenting shortly after birth. They both presented with severe PH in the early postnatal period, with oxygenation indices exceeding 70. Their symptoms were temporarily relieved with comp

BACKGROUND: Extralobar pulmonary sequestration is a rare disease and is frequently associated with congenital malformations. Herein, we report an adult case of an unusual extralobar sequestration accompanied by a bronchogenic cyst and the concurrent absence of the left pericardium. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female patient presented with an abnormal shadow on a chest radiograph. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a partially enhanced cystic mass in the left anterior mediastinum. Another cystic lesion was detected on the left side of the trachea in the upper mediastinum. The a

BACKGROUND: Congenital aerodigestive fistulae (ADF) represent extremely rare developmental malformations derived from disrupted embryological separation of the primitive foregut, which can be classified by lesion location into tracheoesophageal fistulae, bronchoesophageal fistulae (BEF), and other subtypes. While typically diagnosed in neonates, isolated BEF without esophageal atresia ("H-type") may remain undetected for decades, presenting in adulthood with chronic, stereotyped symptoms. Endoscopic interventions for congenital BEF remain poorly characterized, with limited evidence regarding p

Congenital lung malformations (CLMs) are developmental conditions characterized by overlapping clinical and imaging features, with hybrid lesions that combine congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) and bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) becoming increasingly recognized by multidetector CT (MDCT). We present the case of a six-year-old girl with a one-year history of recurrent low-volume hemoptysis. Her chest radiograph indicated a subtle opacity in the right basal area. Thoracic CT angiography revealed parenchymal consolidation in the right lower lobe, characterized by an air broncho

INTRODUCTION: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is the loss of the cartilaginous support of the trachea and/or major bronchi, leading to the dynamic collapse of the airway during respiration. It usually resolves by the age of two. Severe cases often present with recurrent pneumonias requiring hospitalisations, inability to extubate following illness or procedures, or life-threatening events.
METHODS: We present the first Australian case of a successful implantation of tracheal splints using 3D printing technology to treat a 21-month-old with severe TBM who failed non-invasive treatments. His diseas

Bronchiectasis is characterized by the permanent dilation of bronchi, clinically presenting with chronic cough, sputum production, dyspnea, and recurrent exacerbations. Bronchiectasis can occur due to genetic disorders, congenital malformations, endobronchial obstruction of infectious and inflammatory origin, and chronic aspiration, among other causes. Bronchial dilation leads to impaired mucociliary clearance, trapping particles and microorganisms in the airways. Macrophages and epithelial cells release proinflammatory cytokines that promote neutrophil chemotaxis. Neutrophils release enzymes

A 13-year-old male with a past medical history of Noonan syndrome, pulmonary valve stenosis status post balloon valvuloplasty and subsequent surgical valvotomy with main pulmonary artery augmentation, splenomegaly, and von Willebrand disease type 1 presents with chest pain, fever, and chronic, recurrent vomiting. At the outlying facility, computed tomography of the chest revealed a right upper lobe pulmonary cavitation. After an extensive workup, he was found to have a right-sided tracheal bronchus via bronchoscopy. Broad-range polymerase chain reaction analysis of the biopsied specimen demons

Heterotaxy syndrome is a congenital condition characterized by abnormal left-right axis patterning of thoracoabdominal organs, frequently accompanied by complex congenital heart disease and extracardiac anomalies. The condition demonstrates considerable phenotypic variability, posing diagnostic and management challenges. We report three pediatric cases of heterotaxy syndrome classified by atrial isomerism: two with left atrial isomerism (LAI) and one with right atrial isomerism (RAI). The first case involved a 22-month-old male with LAI and polysplenia who presented with a transitional atriove

BACKGROUND: Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a severe congenital anomaly with significant morbidity and mortality. It can be isolated or can be associated with other congenital anomalies, including broncho-pulmonary sequestration (BPS). The association of CDH with BPS (CDH+BPS) is uncommon but has been previously reported, and it can complicate the course of the disease in patients with CDH. We report two cases of CDH+BPS that were recently treated at our CDH-Qatar (CDH-Q) program.
METHODS: We reviewed CDH-Q program registry to search for CDH+BPS and extracted the data for the identif

We present the case of a 14-year-old adolescent boy with a history of poorly controlled asthma and a final diagnosis of a bridge bronchus associated with sling of the left pulmonary artery. Regarding the case report, we describe the characteristic findings in computerized tomography multidetector of the thorax, its classification, and the most relevant information about this malformation. Congenital malformations of the tracheobronchial tree may occur in the context of asymptomatic or symptomatic respiratory patients. These malformations may be associated with other vascular, tracheal, and syn

BACKGROUND: In this study we aimed to describe the morphological and pathogenetic differences between tracheal agenesis and tracheal atresia, which are not clearly distinguished from each other in the literature, and to contribute thereby to the understanding and management of these conditions. Both tracheal agenesis and tracheal atresia represent rare disorders of still unknown aetiology that cannot be detected by prenatal ultrasound. If the affected foetuses survive until birth these conditions result in respiratory failure and in futile attempts to rescue the infant's life.
RESULTS: Autops

Tracheal bronchus is a rare congenital tracheal abnormality that generally refers to the right upper lobe bronchus of the lung that originates from the trachea. Tracheal bronchus is usually asymptomatic and is often accidentally detected by fiberoptic bronchoscopy or computed tomography for other conditions. Depending on the location of the tracheal bronchial opening and possible anatomical variations, the management of 1-lung ventilation in patients with tracheal bronchus is a significant challenge for anesthesiologists. To provide a reference for anesthesiologists to better manage anesthesia

Heterotaxy syndrome (HS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the atypical arrangement of thoracic and abdominal organs. This complex condition is challenging to diagnose due to its ambiguous classification system and the wide spectrum of clinical presentations. HS can be subcategorized into left or right isomerism, with left isomerism typically associated with less severe cardiac malformations but still carrying significant morbidity due to other organ system anomalies. We present the case of a 50-year-old male with a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney diseas
