Tracheomalacia (TM) is characterized by tracheal collapse due to an intrinsic anomaly resulting in a lack of rigidity of the cartilaginous rings and/or the posterior membrane during expiration, coughing or crying. It may also be secondary to external compression or acquired during endobronchial diseases. TM is commonly associated with other syndromes or airway abnormalities. Tracheomalacia can be localized or diffused and if the main bronchi are involved, the term of tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is used. The most common symptoms include expiratory stridor, barking cough and recurrent respirator

BACKGROUND Pfeiffer syndrome (PS) is a fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)-associated craniosynostosis syndrome, characterized by abnormally broad and medially deviated thumbs and great toes. Tracheal cartilage sleeve (TCS) is associated with several FGFR-associated craniosynostosis syndromes, including PS. TCS is an airway malformation in which the tracheal cartilage rings fuse with each other to form a sleeve of cartilage. CASE REPORT The patient was a 4-year-old girl with PS, TCS, and abnormal hyperplasia of non-fused intrapulmonary cartilages. The patient showed cranial dysplasia on p

Tracheobronchomegaly or Mounier-Kuhn syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the widening of the trachea and the main bronchi. It is a form of tracheomalacia called 'cartilaginous malacic' and is characterized by deformation of the tracheal cartilages and intrusion of the redundant membranous wall into the lumen of the airway. We present a patient with Mounier-Kuhn syndrome managed like patients with tracheomalacia of other aetiologies-a tracheobronchoplasty with a reconstructed D-shaped trachea and stabilization of the posterior membranous wall by attaching a polypropylene mesh to the po

BACKGROUND: Patients with congenital heart defects may present with concomitant defects involving other organ systems. Roughly 4 percent of this nature are airway anomalies. Presence of anomalous airways summon major challenge before the anesthesiologist, surgeon, and intensivist in the perioperative management of such patients. There is paucity of literature in the study of airway anomalies in the subset of congenital anomalous pulmonary venous connections. We present the analysis of three cases of airway anomalies in patients operated for anomalous venous drainage at our center. We hope to e

Stent angioplasty of patent ductus arteriosus has been shown to be a viable alternative to operative shunt placement in cyanotic neonates. With broader implementation of this strategy, novel complications are bound to arise. We present a series of cases evaluated for ductal stent angioplasty in which a dilated and torturous ductus arteriosus compressed the left mainstem bronchus. After reviewing our recent experience with ductal stenting and isolated Blalock-Taussig shunts, our best estimate of the incidence of bronchial compression by the dilated ductus is 4.6% (3/64, 95% confidence interval

BACKGROUND: An asymptomatic SCUBA (Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) diver was discovered to have an intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration during routine pre-course screening. This is the first reported case of a diver who, having previously completed several recreational and military diving courses, was subsequently diagnosed with a congenital lung condition, possibly contraindicating diving. Presently, there is no available literature providing guidance on the diving fitness of patients with such a condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: An asymptomatic 26-year-old male diver was nom

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of ectopic origin of bronchial arteries (BAs) on bronchial artery embolization (BAE) for hemoptysis.
METHODS: CT and angiography images of 50 consecutive sessions in 39 patients (aged 26-93 years; mean, 70.6 years) who underwent BAE for hemoptysis from April 2010 to December 2019 were reviewed. We defined ectopic BA as a systemic artery originating from other than the T5-T6 vertebral level of the descending aorta with course along the major bronchi. The background of patients, number of BAs, culprit arteries, and treatment outcomes were compared between the

The term right aortic arch is used for an aorta that arches over the right bronchus. Right aortic arch was classified into two types by Felson et al, based on branching patterns, with a proposed embryological explanation, and into three types by Shuford et al. Other anatomical variants of right aortic arch were described later, including isolated left brachiocephalic artery and aberrant left brachiocephalic artery. We have classified right aortic arch anatomy into 10 variants, supported by radiological evidence, and with reference to possible embryology. This classification will help in unders

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and anatomic features of major tracheobronchial anomalies.
METHODS: Major electronic databases were systematically searched to identify eligible studies. Data were extracted and pooled into a meta-analysis. The primary outcome was the prevalence of major tracheobronchial anomalies, specifically tracheal bronchus (TB) and accessory cardiac bronchus (ACB). Secondary outcomes included the origin and types of TB and ACB.
RESULTS: A total of 27 studies (n = 119,695 patients) were included. A TB was present in 0.99% (95% confidence

Tracheobronchomalacia is a weakness of the trachea and bronchi due to abnormal cartilage and muscular support leading to airway obstruction. We report a case of an adult former smoker without pulmonary symptoms who underwent robotic-assisted laparoscopic cystectomy in the steep Trendelenburg position. After repeated episodes of hypoxemia, bronchoscopic examination revealed collapse of the distal trachea and bronchi, supporting a diagnosis of tracheobronchomalacia. Tracheomalacia is an underdiagnosed condition in patients with a smoking history and may mimic other obstructive diseases. The anes

Pulmonary artery sling is a rare cause of respiratory distress created by compression of the lower trachea and right mainstem bronchus due to an aberrant origin of the left pulmonary artery. The condition is frequently associated with recurrent respiratory infections and other congenital malformations including tracheal rings. We present the case of an infant presenting with pulmonary distress and a history of recurrent respiratory infection. The infant underwent surgery to remove a foreign object; however, the symptoms did not resolve. Bronchoscopy revealed bronchus stenosis, and subsequent e

IMPORTANCE: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) describes an increased collapsibility of the trachea and bronchi that is greatest on forced expiration. A broad term, TBM encompasses intrinsic tracheal weakness, some forms of tracheal deformation, and extrinsic compression. Tracheobronchomalacia is the most common congenital tracheal anomaly, affecting 1 in 2100 children. Tracheobronchomalacia is often associated with recurrent and prolonged respiratory tract infections, can lead to chronic lung disease, and can be fatal in its most severe form. Tracheobronchomalacia is often associated with other cong
