Williams-Campbell syndrome: a rare congenital bronchiectasis.

Williams-Campbell syndrome (WCS) is a rare congenital disorder characterised by the absence of cartilage in sub-segmental bronchi, leading to bronchiectasis. We report a case of a late adolescence male presenting with chronic respiratory symptoms initially misdiagnosed as asthma, later confirmed to have WCS following detailed evaluation. This case highlights the importance of considering WCS in the differential diagnosis of unexplained bronchiectasis and emphasises the role of advanced imaging techniques in its diagnosis.

Williams-Campbell syndrome: a rare case of congenital bronchiectasis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Williams-Campbell syndrome (WCS) is a rare congenital syndrome that can lead to bronchiectasis. Although commonly found in pediatric age groups, it can also be seen in adults due to delayed diagnosis with respiratory symptoms of cough, sputum, and wheezing. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 31-year-old male presented with an incidental finding of bilateral cystic lesions in the lung field for which high-resolution computed tomography of the chest was done, which showed bilateral multiple cystic lesions without any clinical findings except mild inspiratory wheeze. DIAGNOSIS

Out of the box diagnosis in a child treated as childhood interstitial lung disease- William-Campbell syndrome.

A 9-year-old school-going boy was referred to us for evaluation of childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD), with complaints of persisting dry cough, since the newborn period, tachypnea at rest, and failure to gain weight. Upon evaluation his findings were consistent with William-Campbell syndrome (WCS). He was advised for airway clearance technique (ACT) and was started on Bipap at night for splinting of the airways.

De novo deletion of HOXB gene cluster in a patient with failure to thrive, developmental delay, gastroesophageal reflux and bronchiectasis.

We report a female patient with a complex phenotype consisting of failure to thrive, developmental delay, congenital bronchiectasis, gastroesophageal reflux and bilateral inguinal hernias. Chromosomal microarray analysis revealed a 230 kilobase deletion in chromosomal region 17q21.32 (arr[hg19] 17q21.32(46 550 362-46 784 039)×1) encompassing only 9 genes - HOXB1 to HOXB9. The deletion was not found in her mother or father. This is the first report of a patient with a HOXB gene cluster deletion involving only HOXB1 to HOXB9 genes. By comparing our case to previously reported five patients with

The clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of williams-campbell syndrome.

Williams-Campbell syndrome is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by the absence of cartilage in subsegmental bronchi leading to formation of bronchiectasis distal to the affected bronchi. The differential diagnosis of bronchiectasis is broad and the rarity of the disease poses a diagnostic and management challenge for clinicians. This present review aims to help the understanding of the clinical manifestations, pathophysiological features, diagnostic modalities, management and differential diagnosis of Williams-Campbell syndrome. A MedLine/PubMed search was performed identifying all rele

Right bochdalek hernia associated with kartagener syndrome: developmental and clinical observations.

We present a novel case of the association of right-sided Bochdalek hernia, a diaphragmatic life-threatening malformation, and Kartagener syndrome, which is characterized by congenital bronchiectasis, chronic sinusitis, and situs inversus. The developmental and clinical findings are discussed. When an association of diaphragmatic hernia with situs viscerum inversus is encountered, physicians should be mindful of the possibility of Kartagener syndrome because this condition could significantly affect the morbidity of the patient.

Coronary artery bypass surgery in a patient with Kartagener syndrome: a case report and literature review.

Kartagener syndrome consists of congenital bronchiectasis, sinusitis, and total situs inversus in half of the patients. A patient diagnosed with Kartagener syndrome was referred to our department due to 3-vessel coronary disease. An off-pump coronary artery bypass operation was performed using both internal thoracic arteries and a saphenous vein graft. We performed a literature review for cases with Kartagener syndrome, coronary surgery and dextrocardia. Although a few cases of dextrocardia were found in the literature, no case of Kartagener syndrome was mentioned.

Surgical correction of congenital lobar emphysema in a dog.

Massive lobar emphysema in the middle lobe of the right lung was observed in a dog brought to our clinic with sudden onset of tension pneumothorax, and lobectomy was performed to excise it. Pathological examination resulted in a diagnosis of congenital bronchiectasis associated with bronchial cartilage hypoplasia. Two cases of diagnosis and successful treatment of congenital lobar emphysema have been reported in dogs.

[Pulmonary abscesses and bronchiectasis].

Both primary and secondary pulmonary abscesses are increasingly observed in thoracic surgery units. Primary pulmonary abscesses are related to necrotising pneumonia or aspiration due to alcoholism, drug abuse, dysphagia or gastrointestinal reflux disease. Secondary poststenotic abscesses are related to bronchial obstruction (endobronchial tumour or foreign body aspiration) or to superinfection of pulmonary neoplasia or infarction pneumonia. Bronchoscopy is mandatory if a pulmonary abscess is suspected, to exclude endobronchial obstruction and obtain bacteriological examination by bronchial lav

We report a case of bronchiectasis in a 26-year-old man associated with the following congenital abnormalities: deafness, purulent bronchorrhea, nasal polyps, dysmorphic physical pattern and chronic sinusitis. Situs inversus was absent. A sampling was performed on the posterior nasal mucous membrane and displayed structural ciliary abnormality: a deficiency of the intern dynein-arm. The patient's bother was affected and had similar features: congenital bronchiectasis, deafness, mental deficiency and sinusitis. Young's syndrome was relevant in this case. [Left pneumonectomy in a child with congenital bronchiectasis].

A case of diffuse bronchiectasis concerning an entire lung in an eight-year-old boy is described. The disease in this case was widespread in the entire left lung and was considered as consequent to a defect in the development of the left bronchial wall. Because of the frequent respiratory infections, occurring since birth, and given the good anatomical and functional conditions of the right lung, we recommended the surgical excision of the sick lung. After one year, the operation showed good results with regard to respiratory functions. The functioning of the remaining pulmonary parenchyma is

Familial congenital bronchiectasis: Williams-Campbell syndrome.

Williams-Campbell syndrome was first described in 1960 as a rare form of bronchiectasis. Its pathogenesis is characterized by the absence or markedly diminished cartilage around the bronchi. Although the familial nature was postulated early on, only one possible familial occurrence has been reported in the literature. We present two family members in whom respiratory symptoms developed within the first year of life and were found to have histopathologic changes consistent with Williams-Campbell syndrome. This world lend further support of a developmental origin for this type of bronchiectasis.

[The immotile cilia syndrome. A case report].

A case of congenital bronchiectasis associated with hypoplasia [correction of hyperplasia] of maxillary sinuses and sinusitis in a 3-year-old boy is presented. The ultramicroscopic examination of nasal mucosa showed abnormalities in the ultrastructure of the mucociliary system (spare cilia, absence of basal corpuscles, cytoplasmatic projections) clearly suggesting the ciliary immotility syndrome.

[Bronchiectasis with normal paranasal sinus roentgenogram].

Bronchiectasis has come to be considered as a type of sinobronchial syndrome in Japan, but there exist some cases without chronic sinusitis. We studied the clinical features of 14 cases of bronchiectasis with definitely normal paranasal sinus roentgenogram, diagnosed during the past ten years. There were eleven middle-aged women and three men. Ten patients (71%) complained of hemoptysis, one (7%) of dry cough, one (7%) of productive cough, and the two (14%) had no complaint. In seven patients (50%) CT and bronchography showed localized cylindrical bronchiectasis in the right middle lobe and/or

Pipillon-Lefèvre syndrome: report of two familial cases.

Two cases with Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome (PLS) are reported. They are two brothers belonging to a family which there is strong consanguinity. An autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance is suggested. Some pathological findings as congenital bronchiectasis observed in one of the patients as well as the PLS features are discussed and considered to be fortuitous defects. These observations are compared with those described in the literature.

Probable familial congenital bronchiectasis due to cartilage deficiency (Williams-Campbell syndrome).

Two siblings in whom respiratory symptoms developed immediately after birth subsequently were found to have bronchiectasis with strikingly similar distribution of lesions (mainly lower lobes). Inspiratory and expiratory bronchograms performed on one of the siblings demonstrated marked ballooning and collapse of proximal bronchi during tidal breathing. The clinical courses and roentgenographic findings, in the absence of other underlying abnormalities, suggest that the basic disease process was the absence of bronchial cartilage (Williams-Campbell syndrome). This would be the first reported fam
