The mechanisms connecting the human fat depots, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remain elusive. We hypothesize that in individuals with obesity, a decreased degree of adipocyte differentiation may contribute to ectopic fat accumulation in the liver, seen in MASLD.
