BACKGROUND: Small-breed dogs commonly have concurrent myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD).
HYPOTHESIS: Small-breed dogs with preclinical MMVD and concurrent LRTD have more B-lines on point-of-care lung ultrasound (POC-LUS) compared to dogs without concurrent LRTD and are prone to misdiagnose as cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE).
ANIMALS: A total of 114 small-breed dogs with preclinical MMVD.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted, in which POC-LUS was obtained and the number of B-lines was calculated by a single clinician using the Veterinar

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare neoplasm that accounts for less than 5% of all pleural tumors. We present the case of a 73-year-old man with a history of recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycemia secondary to a large malignant SFTP. This paraneoplastic manifestation of SFTP occurs in less than 5% of cases and is referred to as Doege-Potter syndrome. Although rare, this is an important and reversible cause of hypoglycemia, which is resolved by complete surgical resection of the tumor. We describe the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of Doege-Potter syndrome. Key imag

The lymphatic system plays an integral part in fluid homeostasis. Disturbances in lymphatic pathways are congenital, posttraumatic, or posttreatment related, such as after Fontan palliation. Lymphatic pathway evaluation is challenging because of the difficulty in introducing contrast material into the lymphatics. Intranodal, intramesenteric, and intrahepatic dynamic contrast-enhanced MR lymphangiography (DCMRL) offer better visualization of major lymphatic pathways. However, these techniques exclude pathways outside the central conduction system, preventing the visualization of abnormalities a

OBJECTIVES: SARS-CoV-2 can cause respiratory diseases with various manifestations. However, little is known about its potential for lung recovery. Lung ultrasound has shown characteristic changes during COVID-19 and has proven to be useful for triage, diagnosis, and therapy. This study investigated how the recovery process from COVID-19 respiratory disease can be monitored using 12-zone lung ultrasound.
METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study was conducted in a busy urban emergency department in London, United Kingdom, over a 20-week period between April and October 2020. We foll

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a type of pneumonia caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 pneumonia has characteristic radiological features. Recent evidence indicates usefulness of chest X-ray and lung ultrasound (LUS) in detecting COVID-19 pneumonia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective observational study, chest X-ray and LUS features of 50 adults with COVID-19 pneumonia at the time of presentation were described.
RESULTS: Chest X-ray findings were present in 96% of patients, whereas all patients have ultrasound finding.

Ultrasound (US) is an ideal diagnostic tool for paediatric patients owning to its high spatial and temporal resolution, real-time imaging, and lack of ionizing radiation and bedside availability. The lack of superficial adipose tissue and favorable acoustic windows in children makes US the first line of investigation for the evaluation of pleural and chest wall abnormali-ties. Lung parenchyma was previously thought to be inaccessible to ultrasound due to the presence of the air and bony thorax. The change in attitude and growing awareness of the diagnostic possibilities has led to lung ultraso

PURPOSES: The classification of lung sequestrations distinguishes between extralobar and intralobar types, according to their venous drainage - systemic vs pulmonary - and the presence or absence of independent pleura. However, imaging, surgical and/or pathological findings often differ from this description. The objectives of this article are to quantify the percentage of lung sequestrations that do not fit the classic description of extra- and intralobar types and to evaluate the accuracy of the currently used classification.
METHODS: A retrospective search identified all children with a co

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristic thoracic multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) findings of pathologically proven inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the lung in children in the era of modern understanding based on refined pathologic diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All pediatric patients (age 18 y and above) with a known pathologic diagnosis of IMT of the lung who underwent thoracic MDCT studies from May 2008 to December 2020 were included. Two pediatric radiologists independently evaluated thoracic MDCT studies for the presence of abnormal

AIM: To determine the prevalence of pleural abnormalities and describe the computed tomography (CT) features observed in a well-characterised population of patients with pleural infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of a subgroup of patients from the Second Multi-centre Intra-pleural Sepsis Trial (MIST 2) trial was carried out. Patients were diagnosed with pleural infection on robust clinical criteria. CT examinations were assessed by three observers independently for the presence of predefined features. Planned subgroup comparisons of patients with and without evidence of p

AIM: To describe the causes and computed tomography (CT) and angiographic appearances of transpleural systemic artery-to-pulmonary artery shunts in patients without chronic inflammatory lung disease and determine their best management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients referred to a tertiary referral unit between January 2009 and January 2020 in whom a diagnosis of a systemic-to-pulmonary artery communication without underlying chronic inflammatory lung disease was subsequently made have been included in this report. Medical records and imaging findings were reviewed retrospectively.

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) is a rare, generally idiopathic form of interstitial pneumonia with unique clinical, radiological and histopathological features. It is named after the presence of upper lobe pleural and subjacent parenchymal fibrosis, with accompanying elastic fibers. Although it is usually an idiopathic disease, it has been linked to other co-existent diseases. Diagnostic suspicion of PPFE is based on the identification of typical abnormalities on chest CT scan, which are prevailingly located in the upper lobes, adjacent to the apex of the lungs. Diagnosis can be confi

Semirigid thoracoscopy is increasingly becoming the procedure of choice for evaluation of undiagnosed exudative pleural effusions. Few studies have reported relationship of thoracoscopic appearances of pleural abnormalities and etiological diagnoses. We aimed our study to assess the diagnostic utility and safety of semirigid thoracoscopy for evaluation of patients with undiagnosed exudative pleural effusion. Further, we also pursued to find any relation of various thoracoscopic findings with the final diagnosis. We prospectively enrolled hospitalized patients with undiagnosed exudative pleural

OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to provide a detailed overview of pleural abnormalities in patients with coronavirus disease 19 or COVID-19.
BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) is a novel beta coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. Although pulmonary parenchymal and vascular changes associated with COVID-19 are well established, pleural space abnormalities have not been the primary focus of investigations.
METHODS: Narrative overview of the medical literature regarding pleural space abnormalities in COVID-19. The appropriate manuscripts were identifi
