Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the neck with thyroid invasion: a case report and literature review.

Inflammatory myofibroblast tumor (IMT) is a unique intermediate soft tissue tumor, comprising myofibroblasts/fibroblasts, with infiltrating plasma cells, lymphocytes, and/or eosinophils. IMT, first reported in 1939 in the lung or pleura, is most common in children or adolescents and in the lungs; however, it can also occur in other tissues. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of IMT are yet to be clarified. Virus-induced trauma, surgery, autoimmune etiology, inflammation, infection, and abnormal responses to long-standing exogenous stimuli in the body, dominated by myofibroblast proliferation,

Giant Pleural Tumor And Severe Hypoglycemia: Doege-Potter Syndrome In A Previously Healthy Female.

AIntroduction: Doege-Potter's syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, consisting in hypoglycemia and solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. These tumors represent < 5% of all pleural tumours and can only be cured by surgery. In this article, we report a case of a patient presenting with severe hypoglycemia, as the only symptom, and a mass occupying the entire left hemithorax. Case presentation: A54 year old female with severe hypoglycemia, a chest radiography with almost total opacification of the left hemithorax and a computed tomography scan with a mass in the left hemithorax. Surgery was

Pleurisy Can Cause Chest Wall Tenderness: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Stab-like localized chest pain, aggravated by breathing, is compatible with pleuritic pain or with aching related to chest wall abnormalities. Local tenderness inflicted by palpation helps to differentiate pleuritic from musculoskeletal chest pain and serves as a principal accessory manoeuvre in the algorithm of chest pain evaluation. Herein, we report the case of a 27-year-old patient with pulmonary thromboembolism and right lower lobe consolidation/atelectasis. The patient presented with right-sided chest pain, radiating to the shoulder, related to pleural irritation, yet associa

Lung lobe torsion in 15 dogs: Peripheral band sign on ultrasound.

The diagnosis of lung lobe torsion in dogs is usually based on radiological, endoscopic, and CT features. Few ultrasonographic descriptions have been published. The purpose of this multicenter, retrospective, and prospective observational study was to investigate the presence of a hypoechoic area forming a pulmonary band or line at the periphery of the twisted lobe on ultrasonography and assess its significance by comparing it to CT and histological findings. Fifteen dogs with lung lobe torsion confirmed surgically or postmortem were included. All had received ultrasonography and CT examinatio

Lung ultrasound in bronchiolitis.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis is the most common acute viral infection of the lower respiratory tract in infants. Clinical severity is associated with different risk factors; however, no clinical, laboratory, or radiological findings are able to predict the course of the disease in full-term infants. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a valid technique for the diagnosis and evaluation of pediatric respiratory diseases. AIMS: The aim of our study was to correlate an LUS score with a clinical score, to describe lung ultrasound findings in cases and controls, and to compare LUS findings with chest X-ray (CXR)

Lung ultrasound findings in patients with novel SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: Over 2 million people worldwide have been infected with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2). Lung ultrasound has been proposed to diagnose and monitor it, despite the fact that little is known about the ultrasound appearance due to the novelty of the illness. The aim of this manuscript is to characterise the lung ultrasonographic appearance of critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, with particular emphasis on its relationship with the time course of the illness and clinical parameters. METHODS: Adult patients from the intensive care un

Pulmonary sequestration: What the radiologist should know.

Pulmonary sequestration consists of a nonfunctioning mass of lung tissue, either sharing the pleural envelope of the normal lung (intralobar) or with its own pleura (extralobar), lacking normal communication with the tracheobronchial tree and receiving its arterial supply by one or more systemic vessels. It is the second most common congenital lung anomaly according to pediatric case series, but its real prevalence is likely to be underestimated, and imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment management of the condition and its potential complications. We will give a brief overvie

Usefulness of Chest Ultrasonography in Predicting Diagnosis in Non-emergency Small Animal Patients With Lung Parenchymal and Pleural Disease.

Chest ultrasonography has become an indispensable tool for pulmonary specialists in human medicine, but its current use in dogs and cats is primarily for emergency. The diagnostic performances of various ultrasonographic features other than comet-tail artifacts are of limited information in veterinary literatures. Therefore, the aims of this retrospective study were to investigate ultrasonographic findings in feline and canine respiratory patients with lung parenchymal and pleural space diseases, and to assess how ultrasonographic features correspond to specific diagnoses. Sixty-five non-emerg

Expression profile analysis to predict potential biomarkers for glaucoma: BMP1, DMD and GEM.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is the second commonest cause of blindness. We assessed the gene expression profile of astrocytes in the optic nerve head to identify possible prognostic biomarkers for glaucoma. METHOD: A total of 20 patient and nine normal control subject samples were derived from the GSE9944 (six normal samples and 13 patient samples) and GSE2378 (three normal samples and seven patient samples) datasets, screened by microarray-tested optic nerve head tissues, were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We used a weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) to ide

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis in systemic sclerosis: prevalence and prognostic impact.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, mostly presenting as non-specific interstitial pneumonia. Little is known about the prevalence of pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE), a specific entity affecting the visceral pleura and subpleural parenchyma. We set out to estimate PPFE prevalence in two large cohorts of SSc patients and to assess its impact on survival and functional decline.A total of 359 SSc patients, derived from two referral centres in two different countries (UK and Italy), were included. The first available high

Multiple Pulmonary and Pleural Metastases in Recurrent Intracranial Meningioma with Genetic Changes: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: According to the 2016 World Health Organization classification of central nervous system tumors, meningiomas are classified into 3 grades: I, II, and III. It has been reported that 2%-10% of meningiomas exhibit aggressive behavior, and 0.1%-1% of all patients with primary meningiomas develop distant metastases. Past studies have shown that genomic instability is strongly correlated with the risk of meningioma recurrence. Because of the rarity of this tumor, few papers have reported the prognosis and treatment of anaplastic meningioma. Under these circumstances, we present a case of

Proteus empyema as a rare complication from an infected renal cyst, a case report.

BACKGROUND: The most commonly isolated organisms in a parapneumonic effusion include S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and S. aureus. If unusual organisms are isolated from the pleural space, further investigation is warranted to locate the primary source. We present a patient with an infected chronic renal cyst found to have an empyema secondary to Proteus mirabilis to highlight the importance of further diagnostic workup when encountering unusual organisms in the pleural space. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old African-American female, with a past medical history of asthma and sickle cell trait,

Pleural plaques by inhalation of asbestos fibers.

INTRODUCTION: Asbestos fiber pleural plaque is characterized by lesions composed of fibrous tissue that are located in the parietal pleura. They usually appear in up to 3 to 58% of workers who were exposed to asbestos fiber, and 0.5 to 8% in the general population. The objective of this article is to present a case report of a patient whose chest x-ray showed pleural changes associated with exposure to asbestos fibers. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old male patient, construction worker with a history of exposure to asbestos fibers, underwent a chest x-ray performed according to International Labor O

Repository of proposed pathways and protein-protein interaction networks in age-related macular degeneration.

PURPOSE: A trinucleotide repeat expansion in TCF4 is thought to cause Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) in ~70% of European patients. In addition, strong evidence exists for the involvement of rare variants in COL8A2 and SLC4A11 in a small number of FECD cases, and more controversially, it has been suggested that variants in ZEB1, AGBL1, and LOXHD1 may also be involved. We screened patients without a TCF4 repeat expansion for causative variants in the other candidate FECD genes. METHODS: Genomic DNA from blood was genotyped for expansion of the CTG18.1 repeat in intron 2 of TCF4 usin

Left extralobar pulmonary sequestration and a right aorto-to-pulmonary vein fistula in a newborn: a 3-mm thoracoscopic monolateral approach.

An extralobar pulmonary sequestration (EPS) associated with a contralateral aorto-to-pulmonary vein fistula is rare. We report the case of a female newborn with left EPS fed by an artery originating from the distal thoracic aorta and, symmetrically on the controlateral side, an artery shunting in the inferior right pulmonary vein. Echocardiography showed dilatation of the left atrium. On the 34th day since birth (weight 4500 g), the patient was operated on thoracoscopically. The EPS was closed with a 3-mm sealing system, divided and removed. A window in the mediastinal pleura was created, and

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis secondary to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A case report.

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) is a rare interstitial lung disease. Although an increased number of PPFE cases have been reported recently, the characteristics of this condition have not been well described. The present study reports on the case of a 34-year-old male patient who presented with unilateral lung abnormalities. The patient was admitted due to a 9-year history of progressive cough and exertional dyspnea, as well as a history of Hodgkin's lymphoma treated by autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The patient had been initially diagnosed with tuberculosis

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) treated with lung transplantation and review of the literature.

A 26-year-old woman presented with a 15-year history of non-progressive dyspnoea. Chest imaging showed bilateral apical pleural and parenchymal scarring, pleural thickening and bronchiectasis. Pulmonary function tests showed a moderate restrictive defect. Non-invasive workup was non-revealing; therefore, the patient was referred for video-assisted thoracic surgery and lung biopsy. Histopathology revealed pleural thickening and, subpleural parenchymal fibrosis and elastic tissue deposition. Lung parenchyma further away from the pleura was well preserved. Based on these findings, the patient was
