Video-assisted thoracoscopic excision of a bronchogenic cyst with a pericardial defect and an aortic feeding artery.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital foregut anomalies, often detected incidentally. We report the case of a 24-year-old female who was incidentally detected during a routine health check-up to have a mediastinal mass. Preoperative chest computed tomography imaging suggested a benign bronchogenic cyst. Minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was planned for its excision. Intraoperatively, a pericardial defect and a feeding artery arising from the aortic arch were noted. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged on postoperative day 3. This case demonstrates the ut

Cystic duplication of lower esophagus in children case report.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal duplication is a rare form of digestive duplication. This congenital malformation may remain silent or manifest itself by respiratory signs such as compression. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported 1 case of esophageal duplication. This was a 12-year-old male child born at term, admitted to our level for chest pain and dysphagia evolving for 4 months. Upon further evaluation, fluid formation at the level of the right lower esophageal latero medial mediastinum was discovered and surgical intervention was necessary. The final diagnosis was an esophageal duplication cyst. DIS

Bronchogenic Cyst with Degeneration of the Adjacent Membranous Portion of the Trachea: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital, benign cystic lesions that develop in the mediastinum. Many patients are asymptomatic, and conservative observation is often chosen in clinical practice. However, delayed surgical resection following cyst enlargement and compression of the adjacent membranous portion of the trachea can result in perioperative challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 53-year-old woman who had been under observation for 10 years for an asymptomatic mediastinal mass. The mass enlarged gradually and caused persistent cough along with obstructive venti

A Case of Bronchogenic Cyst Detected by Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital cystic anomalies of the bronchus that originate from abnormal development of the bronchial tree during the embryonic period. Their common manifestation is a space-occupying lesion in the lungs or mediastinum. Common imaging modalities for detecting bronchogenic cysts include chest X-ray and chest computed tomography (CT) scans. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female presented with an abnormal space-occupying lesion in the mediastinum detected through imaging examinations. Echocardiography revealed a cystic mass located between the descending aort

Case Report: Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst mimicking adrenal mass: Clinical implications and comprehensive literature analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are benign congenital anomalies originating from embryonic foregut development. Although typically located in the mediastinum or lung parenchyma, retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are exceedingly rare, with only a limited number of cases reported in the literature. We present a case of a bronchogenic cyst situated in the left retroperitoneal space, along with a concise review of previously documented cases, summarizing their common epidemiological, clinicopathological, and prognostic features. CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old female was admitted with unexplained lef

Midline cervical bronchogenic cyst: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are congenital anomalies typically located in the mediastinum or lung, with ectopic presentations in the neck being exceptionally rare. The potential for compressive symptoms and malignant transformation underscores the need for precise surgical resection. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old female presented with a self-palpable cervical mass and notable dysphagia. Medical imaging revealed a well-defined cystic lesion in the anterior cervical region. DIAGNOSES: The histopathological analysis post-resection confirmed a bronchogenic cyst lined by ciliated column

A Curious Cyst Beyond the Thorax: A Rare Case of Extrathoracic Bronchogenic Cyst Over the Shoulder in a Child.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations originating from abnormal budding of the tracheobronchial tree during embryogenesis. While typically found in the mediastinum or lungs, extrathoracic presentations, particularly in the scapular or shoulder region, are exceedingly rare. We report the case of a three-year-old female with a cystic lesion over the left supraclavicular area that was histopathologically diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst. This case underscores the importance of including bronchogenic cysts in the differential diagnosis of pediatric cystic masses outside the thorax.

Oesophageal duplication cyst resembling congenital lobar emphysema.

A female infant presented with a month-long history of dry cough, along with two episodes of fever and increased work of breathing, requiring hospital admission and oxygen therapy. On examination, she had severe acute malnutrition, mild tachypnoea, chest retractions and reduced air entry in the left lower lung zone with occasional wheezing, though oxygen saturation was normal on room air. Chest X-ray showed left lung hyperinflation with mediastinal shift to the right. A plain CT chest done outside showed left lung hyperlucency, and bronchoscopy revealed near-complete blockage of the left main

Suprasternal Bronchogenic Cyst Masquerading as Thyroid Swelling: A Case Report.

Abnormal foregut budding during early embryonic development results in bronchogenic cysts, which are uncommon congenital anomalies that usually develop along the tracheobronchial tree, in the mediastinum, or inside the lung parenchyma. Bronchogenic cysts, which are lined with respiratory epithelium and filled with fluid or mucus, are frequently asymptomatic but might develop compressive symptoms or recurrent infections if they increase, get infected, or occasionally rupture. Imaging is usually used to make the diagnosis; magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography can show a well-defined

Complicated oesophageal duplication cyst in a 55-year-old man: a rare case from Pakistan.

Duplication cysts are congenital anomalies that arise during early embryonic development. They occur in the small intestine, oesophagus, stomach, and colon. Oesophageal duplication cyst (ODC) is rare among newborns, but even rarer in adults. We report the case of a 55-year-old male with the presenting complaints of haematemesis, dysphagia, and significant weight loss for the past eight months. Clinical examination was unremarkable, except that the patient had pallor. Computed tomography scan confirmed the presence of ODC. Subtotal oesophagectomy with gastric pull-up and sub-aortic oesophagogas

Anterior mediastinal masses and thymic cysts.

Cystic lesions of the anterior mediastinum in children suggest a well-known group of benign lesions that are comparatively frequent. Thymic cysts (TCs) are mostly positioned in the anterior mediastinum and some patients in the neck. Benign TCs classified as congenital intra-thoracic mesothelial cysts are commonly asymptomatic and have slight clinical significance. Multilocular TC, which can mimic another anterior mediastinal cystic tumor and is seen in adults, is more clinically important. It is a sporadic mediastinal lesion thought to arise in the course of acquired inflammation. Congenital m

Unusual tumour of the anterior mediastinum: Intrathymic bronchogenic cyst mimicking a thymoma.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital cystic lesions. Their occurrence in the anterior mediastinum as intrathymic bronchogenic cyst is extremely uncommon. These cysts present as mediastinal masses, and are generally asymptomatic and often diagnosed incidentally. Despite being benign, their intrathymic location and variable radiological appearance can mimic more common conditions such as thymomas. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice to confirm the diagnosis. We report a case involving a partial thymectomy performed for a suspected thymoma in the anterior mediastinum, which was subseq

A Case of Intramural Esophageal Bronchogenic Cyst.

A bronchogenic cyst is a congenital malformation with a rare esophageal origin. Occasionally, it is discovered incidentally, and excision is the only treatment. A 43-year-old patient was referred to our hospital for treatment of a cystic tumor in the left posterior mediastinum. We suspected the tumor was a bronchogenic cyst by imaging findings; therefore, we performed video-assisted thoracoscopic resection. The patient was discharged 9 days postoperatively. The tumor origin was found to be the esophageal wall. This report presents a rare case in which the esophageal wall was the origin of the

Antipsychotic, benzodiazepine and Z-drug prescriptions in a Swiss hospital network in the Choosing Wisely and COVID-19 eras: a longitudinal study.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Physicians frequently prescribe antipsychotics off-label to treat, among others, insomnia and anxiety. The Swiss "smarter medicine - Choosing Wisely" campaign has tried to raise awareness about the risks and to limit benzodiazepine and Z-drug prescriptions. In the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, our network of public hospitals joined the campaign with the aim of avoiding unnecessary benzodiazepine and Z-drug treatments, with prescription monitoring, benchmarking and educational contributions. Considering the risks of a possible shift towards the prescription of antipsy

Repeated misdiagnosis of small intestine bronchogenic cyst: a case report.

Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital malformations of the respiratory system. These cysts can be categorized as intrapulmonary, mediastinal, or ectopic. Ectopic bronchogenic cysts, which lack distinctive clinical and imaging features, are particularly challenging to diagnose. This study presents a 48-year-old woman having a small intestinal bronchogenic cyst. She was repeatedly misdiagnosed as having an ovarian chocolate cyst or a cystic mass of bladder origin three years ago. However, no cyst was found during the operation. Half a year prior to presenting at our hospital, the patient de

Congenital cystic neck mass of thymic origin.

Neck masses are frequently seen in children. The differential diagnosis includes infectious, congenital and neoplastic lesions. We report a case of rare thymic neck mass in a boy in his middle childhood presented with a history of a left anterolateral neck mass not associated with fever, dysphagia or shortness of breath. The radiographic evaluation showed a picture of a thymopharyngeal duct cyst. Thymic remnant and thymopharyngeal duct cyst are caused by the failure of obliteration and might appear as a lateral neck mass in children. Unusually severe neonatal presentation of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations that occur in adults and children, with differences in distribution and presentation. We present the case of a newborn who initiated respiratory distress from the first minutes of life, presenting with hypoventilation and rightward displacement of the cardiac impulse, requiring oxygen therapy and intubation. The first radiograph shows a left pulmonary emphysema. The computerized axial tomography revealed a large mediastinal mass causing an obstructive syndrome of the left bronchus. The mass was successfully excised, resulting in a favorable

[Pericardial cyst, a rare, minimally symptomatic lesion easy to treat].

A pericardial cyst is a rare and benign lesion, most commonly of congenital origin. A female patient of 35 years old was admitted to the emergency department of our institution, for non-irradiating thoracic pain associated with a dyspnea. A CT-Scan was performed, and a pericardial cyst of a large size was found. A surgical procedure through thoracoscopy was performed to enhance the symptomatology of the patient and to eradicate the cyst. The diagnosis of these lesions is most commonly sporadic after a radiography performed for other causes. Most of the time these lesions are asymptomatic (alth
