Mediastinal mature cystic teratoma in a child: A case report study.

INTRODUCTION: A mediastinal teratoma is a very rare disease, in which a relatively large mass grows in the space between the two lungs. Although it is a congenital abnormality, it is diagnosed late in the second or third decade. It could be benign or malignant, symptomatic or asymptomatic. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A five-year-old child presented with an acute respiratory distress episode due to an acute infection, unresponsive to first-line antibiotics and had a history of similar recurrent pulmonary infections. On imaging, the patient showed an abnormal mediastinal mass which was speculated to

A 19-year-old woman with mature pericardial teratoma.

Mediastinal teratoma accounts for 10% of congenital teratoma and 7% of all childhood germ cell tumors. Subsequently, teratomas including intrapericardial or pericardial teratoma are extremely rare. A 19-year-old woman case admitted to Moewardi General Hospital in Surakarta, Indonesia, in June 2022 was reported with chest pain radiating to her back. Previously, the patient was treated with a tuberculosis regimen 2 months ago, because the CT results showed as tuberculosis mediastinal abscess. Therefore, the patient was referred to this hospital for further diagnosis. In this hospital, the CT was

An unusual site of a pericardial cyst in a child: A case report.

Pericardial cysts are rare congenital anomalies, often clinically silent and incidentally found on imaging. However, patients with pericardial cysts may present with chest pain, tachypnea, and, rarely, symptoms secondary to cardiac tamponade. Echocardiography (transthoracic or transesophageal) and chest computed tomography (CT) scan with contrast are diagnostic modalities of choice in patients with pericardial cysts. Conservative management is justified in asymptomatic patients, while a surgical approach is recommended in symptomatic patients. Here, we describe the case of a 12-year-old boy wh

A case of a transient phrenic nerve paralysis after resection of a giant lymphangioma evaluated by dynamic digital radiography.

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioma is a relatively rare benign congenital malformation composed of dilated cystic lymphatic vessels; however, its occurrence in adults and manifestation as mediastinal lymphangioma are even rarer. In general, the incidence of mediastinal lymphangiomas has been reported to range from 0.01 to 4.5% of all mediastinal tumors. Mediastinal lymphangiomas tend to increase in size and can sometimes stretch the phrenic nerve that are present in the mediastinum, resulting in phrenic nerve palsy. Dynamic digital radiography (DDR) allows for quantitative evaluation over time and has r

Extrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are rare congenital lesions that originate from the tracheobronchial bud and can be found in any organ derived from the embryonic foregut. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice, and the definitive diagnosis is established by histopathological examination. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: 41-year-old female with diastolic arterial hypertension and a heterogeneous mass, with multiple calcifications and a solid component with well-defined regular contours. A biochemical study revealed no functionality. Intraoperatively we noticed an adrenal gland-d

Non-Neoplastic Thoracic Cysts: A Clinicopathologic Study of 136 Cases.

Benign cysts of the thoracic cavity represent a group of rare lesions, the spectrum of which is expanding. Most of these are congenital in nature, secondary to abnormal development during embryogenesis while a smaller subset represents acquired lesions. We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathologic features of 136 patients with thoracic cysts that were treated in our institution over a span of 20 years. The patients were 85 female and 51 male patients with an average age of 51 years. Eighty-four of the patients were asymptomatic (62%), the remainder mainly presented with chest pain, shortn

Percutaneous transthoracic catheter drainage prior to surgery in treating neonates with congenital macrocystic lung malformation presenting with respiratory distress.

BACKGOUND: It is rarely seen that neonates with congenital macrocystic lung malformation (CMLM) presenting with respiratory distress require emergency intervention. No consensus has been achieved concerning the best policy facing such condition. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of our strategies in treating neonates with CMLM presenting with respiratory distress. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of six neonates with CMLM presenting with respiratory distress from April 2020 to October 2022 for whom drainage-prior-to-surgery strategy were adopted and favorable ou

Esophageal duplication cysts: a clinical practice review.

Esophageal duplication represents one of the most common types of bronchopulmonary foregut malformations. These rare congenital anomalies occur secondary to embryological aberrations between the 4th and 8th weeks of gestation. In order to be classified as an esophageal cyst a mediastinal cyst must have a close proximity with the esophagus, be lined by alimentary (squamous epithelium) or tracheobronchial mucosa and covered by two smooth muscle layers. These rare anomalies are often asymptomatic during adulthood. However, they can cause symptoms in early childhood, generally during the first 2 y

Surgical Management of Pericardial Cysts: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Introduction Pericardial cysts (PCs) are infrequent, non-malignant, and congenital abnormalities. The identification and treatment of PCs remain a significant challenge, with limited research on surgical management. Methods We performed a retrospective study of patients with PCs who underwent surgical intervention at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from February 2002 to December 2022. Results A total of 55 patients underwent surgery due to PCs during the study period. Thirty-one were females and 24 were males. The average age of the patients was 44.7 ± 12.9 (six to

Severe dysphagia due to an esophageal duplication cyst in sixth decade, unusual presentation of a rare pathology.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital tumors usually diagnosed and treated during childhood. Most of them are located in the mediastinum and appear as a mass besides the esophagus. Unfortunately, symptoms are non-specific and depend on the size and location of the mass; therefore, they can easily be missed. If symptoms appear, surgical resection is necessary to prevent troublesome complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with severe progressive dysphagia and epigastric pain. After further evaluation, a paraesophageal cys

Pericardial Cyst at an Unusual Location: The Role of CT Imaging.

The pericardial cyst is a benign, uncommon congenital cystic lesion of pericardial origin located in the anterior and middle mediastinum. Most commonly, pericardial cysts are located in the right anterior cardiophrenic angle. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the chest are the non-invasive imaging modalities for the diagnosis of the pericardial cyst. Here we present a case of a 55-year-old male who presented with coughing and chest pain for two weeks. A chest X-ray revealed a soft-tissue opacity mass in the left lower zone. A CT of the chest showed a fluid-densit

Infantile type I pleuropulmonary blastoma presenting with dyspnea due to compression by pneumothorax and an occupying tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is an extremely rare and malignant pediatric lung tumor. Purely cystic PPB has a more favorable prognosis than solid PPB, but may be difficult to distinguish from a certain type of "benign" congenital pulmonary airway malformation before and during surgery. The influence of tumor rupture on long life prognosis has not been clarified in detail. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-month-old boy underwent emergency transfer from another hospital due to a left thoracic cystic lesion and left pneumothorax detected on chest radiography performed for persistent wheeze a

Symptomatic pericardial cysts and dilemmas in their diagnosis.

Pericardial cysts (PCs) or pleuropericardial cysts are rare congenital mediastinal lesions with an approximate incidence of one in 100 000 persons. Usually, they are asymptomatic, being incidentally discovered during a routine chest imaging examination or an autopsy exam. The study involved a retrospective evaluation of clinicopathological findings in a 6-year series of PCs, treated in the Clinic of Pulmonary Diseases, Iaşi, Romania. A group of five cases of PCs, four females and one male, were evaluated. All patients displayed different symptoms, such as dyspnea, chest pain, chronic cough, fa

An Incidental Case of Morgagni Hernia With Beaver Tail Liver in an Adult.

Morgagni hernia is a rare congenital defect of the diaphragm, especially seen in children but rarely observed in adults. It occurs due to a congenital defect during the development of the diaphragm. Bochdalek hernia is a common congenital form of diaphragmatic hernia. Morgagni hernia is usually rare with a prevalence of approximately 2-3%. Beaver tail liver, which is also called sliver of liver, is a rare variant of liver morphology. Sometimes elongated left lobe of the liver can extend laterally across the midline to contact and often surround the spleen. A 46-year-old female from Karnataka c

Case report: Two rare new cases of diaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts.

The bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a type of congenital anomaly that is most usually found in the mediastinum and lung, and rarely in the diaphragm. We report two cases of bronchogenic cysts originating from the left diaphragm. Case 1 involved a 50-year-old man who underwent computed tomography (CT) of the adrenal glands for hypertension, showing left adrenal changes. An adrenal CT at our hospital showed a space-occupying lesion above the left diaphragm. We performed a left-sided thoracotomy in the seventh intercostal space and found that the mass was entirely located in the diaphragm. Case 2 was a

A cyst in the mist: bronchogenic mediastinal cysts.

Malformations of the bronchopulmonary foregut can lead to the formation of bronchogenic mediastinal cysts (BMC). BMC are rare congenital malformations usually found in the middle or posterior mediastinum. Only one-third of patients with BMC are symptomatic. We report a case of BMC in a 48-year-old female who was referred to the cardiothoracic surgeons due to an incidental finding of an anterior mediastinal mass on investigation for intermittent chest pain. The mass was treated surgically with a partial median sternotomy and mass excision. The patient's symptomology and mass histology were atyp

Branchial cleft cyst arising in posterior mediastinum: A case report.

Branchial cleft cysts are congenital diseases of the neck caused by abnormal embryonic development of the first to fourth branchial clefts. Most branchial cleft cysts are found in the head and neck, but branchial cleft cysts arising in posterior mediastinum are rarely reported. We report a 44-year-old Chinese man who was found to have a right-posterior mediastinal mass on chest computed tomography (CT) during a physical examination. The size of the mass was about 30.6 mm * 25.1 mm and enhanced CT of the chest showed an occupying lesion in the right parietal esophagus of the upper-posterior med

Thoracoscopic Resection of a Foregut Duplication Cyst with the Use of a 5-mm Stapling Device in an Infant-A Case Report.

Esophageal foregut duplication cysts are a rare congenital anomaly predominantly diagnosed in children. With possible growth foregut duplication cysts may cause compression on thoracic or mediastinal structures, respectively. Due to the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa and its potential malignant alteration resection of foregut duplication cysts is recommended. More recently, the use of a thoracoscopic approach for resection has shown to be an advantageous alternative to a conventional open approach.
