Bronchogenic cysts are a congenital primitive foregut-derived developmental malformation, generally occurring in the posterior mediastinum. Their development in the retroperitoneum is extremely rare. Imaging techniques, such as multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), are typically effective in the detection of these lesions. Here, we describe three cases of a retroperitoneal cyst presenting as a para-adrenal mass. Only one boy presented with abdominal pain, and the other two showed no clinical symptoms. Endocrinological evaluation of all three cases was performed, and no adrenal hormone secr

Esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies that are often symptomatic because of compression of surrounding structures. They are commonly diagnosed during childhood, with affected patients often presenting with abdominal pain or chest pain. Point-of-care ultrasound can be used as part of the emergency department evaluation of pediatric chest pain. We present a case of a 6-year-old boy who presented to the emergency department with worsening abdominal and chest pain, where point-of-care cardiac ultrasound identified a cystic structure in the posterior mediastinum.

Bronchogenic cyst that is localized to retroperitoneum is a rare clinical entity. It is a congenital malformation generally occuring in the posterior mediastinum due to abnormal development of the foregut. We report the case of a retroperitoneal cyst presented like left adrenal cyst. A 38 years old female was presented with left upper abdominal pain. Endocrinologic evaluation was done and no adrenal hormonal secretion was detected. The cyst was removed laparoscopically. It was confirmed in pathologic examination as a bronchogenic cyst. Bronchogenic cysts should be considered in the differentia

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are congenital abnormalities commonly found within the mediastinum. Diaphragmatic location is extremely rare. We present a woman in her 60s with an asymptomatic intradiaphragmatic BC. The patient underwent complete surgical resection with primary closure of the left hemidiaphragm. BCs should remain a differential diagnosis of any soft-tissue mass in the region of the diaphragm. Complete surgical resection is recommended even in asymptomatic patients to avoid complications such as infection, rupture, bleeding or malignant transformation.

Diffuse bilateral enlargement of the choroid plexus has long been appreciated as a cause of shunt-resistant hydrocephalus in infants, most often secondary to cerebrospinal fluid overproduction. Despite the fact that such lesions have interchangeably been termed 'villous hypertrophy' (VH) or 'bilateral choroid plexus papilloma' (CPP), little attention has been paid to the pathological distinctions that characterize these two entities. We present a case of presumed VH in a 2-week-old female presenting with cerebrospinal fluid production-dependent hydrocephalus that ultimately required bilateral

Sixteen years since their initial description in the literature, posterior mediastinal Mullerian cysts - otherwise known as cysts of Hattori, after their discoverer - remain rare, with only 40 patients reported as of 2020. We report a 43 year old obese female that presented with a 2.6 cm cyst found in the posterior mediastinum by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and previously by chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) originally diagnosed as a congenital enteric duplication cyst of the esophagus radiologically. Upon surgical excision via a DaVinci thoracoscopy, the cyst was confirmed to be of Mulle

Branchial cleft anomalies are a heterogeneous group of congenital disorders that theoretically emerge due to incomplete obliteration of the branchial apparatus, components of the six main pairs of pharyngeal arches, during embryonic development. They can result in a cyst, a sinus, or a fistula. For a congenital lateral neck mass, they represent the most common diagnosis in pediatric neck pathology. Its location is usually in the cervical area, anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. In adults, they present with symptoms such as acute suppurative thyroiditis and recurrent cervical abscess.

In this study, we present the case of a 10-year-old boy with a left-sided neck mass. Although most neck masses in children are non-cancerous, their etiology can be complex, especially in neck masses of congenital origin. The workup of a pediatric neck mass includes imaging and cytopathology. In this case, the histopathology of the excised mass revealed thymic tissue, which helped establish the diagnosis of a thymopharyngeal duct cyst. Thymophayngeal duct cysts, although rare, can be diagnosed preoperatively by characteristic tapering toward the mediastinum. Cytopathology may demonstrate Hassal

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital foregut dysplasia that occur mostly in the lungs and mediastinum. Here, we report a rare case of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst, the location, relationship to adjacent structures and blood supply of which were determined by computed tomography (CT) recombination technology and resected by laparoscope. The case was a 41-year-old female patient. The patient came to the hospital because of intermittent lumbar back discomfort for 1 month. CT scanning revealed a cystic mass of 3.9 cm × 3.2 cm × 3.0 cm behind the left peritoneum. The mass was close to the left ad

Congenital pericardial cysts are rare anomalies caused by the failure of fetal lacunae to coalesce into pericardial coelom. In this article a 9-year-old boy admitted with complain of palpitation in daily activities. The electrocardiography detected sinus tachycardia of 150 beats per minute with normal axis. Although chest X ray were normal, echocardiography showed an abnormal mass that compressed the posterior wall of left ventricle. The mass was extrinsic and confined to the pericardium. After midsternotomy, a huge cyst was found and totally excised. The complications of pericardial cyst can

INTRODUCTION: Infants with newborn congenital anomalies are increasingly undergoing minimally invasive surgical (MIS) repair. Currently available data on outcomes are limited. This study provides national estimates for length of stay and 30-day complications following MIS for congenital anomalies.
METHODS: Using the ACS-NSQIP Pediatric (2013-2018), a retrospective analysis of MIS for congenital anomalies was performed. MIS repairs for the following diagnoses were included: pyloric stenosis (PS), congenital lung lesion (LL), mediastinal mass (MM), congenital malrotation (CM), anorectal malform

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Esophageal cysts (EC) are congenital, extremely rare malformation. Up to 80% of EC are diagnosed in childhood, therefore, we can find only few clinical observations of EC in adults in literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: During the period from October to December 2019, a successful surgical treatment of 2 patients (1 male and 1 female) with enterogenous and duplication cysts of esophagus was performed at the Clinic of Faculty Surgery at Sechenov University. In both cases thoracic tumors were incidental findings during routine health investigation.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION:

BACKGROUND: Congenital lung malformation is an umbrella term and consist of various kind of parenchymal and mediastinal pathologies. Surgical resection is often required for diagnosis and curative treatment. We aimed to review our experience in surgical treatment for congenital lung disease and present the role of minimally invasive surgery.
METHODS: Surgical resections performed for benign lesions of the lung and mediastinum between January 2009 and May 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients who were found to have congenital lung malformation as a result of pathological examination wer

BACKGROUND: Pericardial cysts are rare congenital mediastinal cysts. They are typically asymptomatic and are often discovered incidentally, although some patients may present with chest pain and dyspnoea. Asymptomatic patients are managed conservatively with multiple modalities, with surgical resection often recommended for symptomatic patients only. The frequency of follow-up imaging has yet to be established.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 59-year-old female with a gradually increasing pericardial cyst, first noted 10 years prior as an abnormal cardiac silhouette on routine chest radio

Bronchogenic Cysts (BCs) are benign congenital malformations commonly located in the mediastinum. In recent years the development of antenatal diagnosis has changed the BCs management allowing an earlier minimally invasive approach. We report a case of an asymptomatic 8-months-old girl with antenatal diagnosis of subcarinal posterior mediastinal BC. Thoracoscopic excision of the cyst was successfully performed. The management of antenatally diagnosed BCs is discussed. Thoracoscopic treatment of BCs is safe and effective with the advantage of a reduced morbidity compared to thoracotomy.

Background: A fetal bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a rare congenital anomaly with an incidence of 0.147-0.238‰. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, as a particular situation, hindered pregnant women from receiving periodic prenatal checkups. Case Description: Until 34+6 weeks of gestation, a fetal case of the intrathoracic cyst was found by ultrasound examination. Further, MRI examination confirmed the diagnosis of the congenital mediastinal cystic lesion, probably a BC. Genetic testing was not conducted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At 38+5 weeks of gestation with maternal COVID-19 t

Pericardial cysts are a rare entity, accounting for 6-7 percent of all mediastinal masses. They are frequently congenital relating to a failure of fusion of mesenchymal layers forming the pericardial space. Pericardial cysts are considered rare incidental findings, they are mostly asymptomatic and benign, however life-threatening complications may occur. Here we present a case of a silent pericardial cyst that was discovered by chance while performing transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) for a man who was admitted for myocardial infarction.

Neurenteric cyst is a rare congenital anomaly that belongs to the spinal dysraphism spectrum. It is classically a disease of late childhood, with some rare reports of intrauterine and adult presentation. The increase in incidental antenatal diagnosis raises new management questions. We present a case of an asymptomatic combined intraspinal-posterior mediastinal neurenteric cyst. The cyst was diagnosed on antenatal ultrasound and was initially treated with image-guided aspiration in early infancy. However, the cyst recurred and the patient developed recurrent episodes of bacterial meningitis. T

Pericardial cysts are rare mediastinal masses of congenital etiology. Giant pericardial cysts measuring greater than 10 cm are even rarer. In a small proportion of cases, the natural history of pericardial cyst is one of continuous slow growth. Symptomatic pericardial cysts can be treated initially with percutaneous aspiration. Very large or complicated cysts are preferentially treated by open surgical excision. We present a case of a rapidly growing giant pericardial cyst in a 36-year-old male. The cyst was an overlooked incidental finding on a computed tomography scan of the abdomen and pelv

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies that they are usually diagnosed prenatally during the routine second trimester scan. We present such a rare case of bronchogenic cyst in a fetus. Our initial scan demonstrated a big cystic mass, which enlarged progressively causing shifting of the mediastinum and compression of the fetal heart. Consequent hydrops fetalis was treated with thoracoamniotic shunt and the pregnancy continued with no further complications. Pontnatal period, surgery and long term follow-up was uneventful.
