Successful excision of a giant subcarinal bronchogenic cyst by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

Mediastinal bronchogenic cysts, regarded as congenital foregut abnormalities, are uncommon. These cysts can compress adjacent structures, causing obstructive symptoms and complications. A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with complaints of tachycardia, dyspnea, and chest pain. Enhanced computed tomography revealed a 90 × 90 mm, well-defined subcarinal cystic mass causing significant compression and stenosis of the right main bronchus, right pulmonary artery, and right inferior pulmonary vein. The mass was successfully excised using one window and two-port video-assisted thoracoscop

Obstetrician patterns of steroid administration for the prenatal management of congenital pulmonary airway malformations.

BACKGROUND: Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) is the most common prenatally-diagnosed lung malformation. This lesion, classified as macrocystic or microcystic, can lead to significant fetal compromise. Management options include observation, maternal antenatal steroid administration, and fetal surgical intervention. Current evidence suggests that microcystic (but not macrocystic) lesions and those with a cyst volume ratio (CVR) >1.6 are responsive to steroid therapy. The objective of this study was to identify patterns of prenatal steroid administration for the management of CPAM

Paratracheal air cyst and bronchogenic cyst in patients with esophageal cancer who received thoracoscopic esophagectomy: A case series of three patients.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Mediastinal cystic lesions, such as paratracheal air cyst (PTAC) and bronchogenic cyst (BC), are rare anomaly usually found incidentally in thoracic imaging. Special attention is needed in the case of thoracic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: All three patients were male, 71, 73, and 76 years old. Preoperative CT showed each had a lobular cystic lesion at the right posterolateral side of trachea in the thoracic outlet 11, 14, and 19 mm in size, respectively, with air density and tracheal communication, leading to a diagnosis of PTACs. An oval cystic lesion, 7 mm in siz

Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst in suprarenal region treated by laparoscopic resection: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are benign congenital foregut malformations that are mostly present in the mediastinum and pulmonary parenchyma but rarely seen in the retroperitoneum. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of 17-year-old girl who complained of epigastric pain. A cystic lesion was found in the left suprarenal region on spectral computed tomography. The ovoid, well-defined, and homogeneous cystic lesion revealed slightly enhancement on conventional imaging but no enhancement on 40 KeV virtual mono-energetic images. The iodine density value of the lesion was 0.001 mg/mL and the Z

[Intrapancreatic bronchogenic cyst. A case report].

Bronchogenic cysts arise from abnormalities of the tracheobronchial tree occurring during the early stages of embryonal development. They are most often found in the posterior mediastinum. Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are infrequent and intrapancreatic bronchogenic cysts extremely rare. We present a case of an asymptomatic, intrapancreatic bronchogenic cyst which was an incidental finding during the urological workup of a 61-year-old man.

Congenital Neck Masses.

Congenital neck masses (CNMs) are developmental malformations that present with a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms and signs. They account for 21% to 45% of neck masses in children and 5% to 14% in adults. This study aimed to present the clinical manifestations and treatment of CNM from single-institution experiences. A retrospective analysis of patients surgically treated for CNM in a 12-year period was performed. Altogether, 117 patients (female/male ratio, 1:1.05) were diagnosed with CNM. The mean age at presentation was 26.91 years (range, 0.01-84 years). Within the study population, 120

Imaging Findings in Neonates With Congenital Pyriform Sinus Fistula: A Retrospective Study of 45 Cases.

Background: Congenital pyriform sinus fistula (CPSF) is a rare branchial cleft deformity. The characteristics and management of CPSF in neonates are different from those in children or adults, and a comprehensive understanding of the imaging features of neonatal CPSF can facilitate its preoperative diagnosis. Thus, the aim of this study was to summarize the ultrasonography (US) and CT imaging findings of CPSF in neonates. Methods: Forty-five full-term neonates with CPSF, confirmed by pathology after surgical resection from January 2012 to October 2020, were included in this retrospective study

Non-Neoplastic Mediastinal Cysts.

Primary mediastinal cysts are infrequent lesions that can arise from a variety of mediastinal organs or structures. Most of these are congenital in origin and incidental findings during investigations for unrelated conditions. Histologically, the cysts may be composed of various tissues, including bronchogenic, pericardial, thymic, enteric, Müllerian, lymphatic, and parathyroid types. Mediastinal cysts typically demonstrate a benign clinical course and patients are cured after complete surgical resection. In this review, the embryogenesis, clinical, radiologic, and pathologic characteristics o

Computed tomography features can distinguish type 4 congenital pulmonary airway malformation from other cystic congenital pulmonary airway malformations.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify clinical and computed tomography (CT) features that distinguish among cystic congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAMs) and offer new management strategies. METHODS: We retrieved data on 145 children (85 male, 60 female; median age, 14 months) with pathologically confirmed cystic CPAMs from 2008 to 2018 and retrospectively analyzed the clinical and CT characteristics. RESULTS: Of the 145 patients, 54 had type 1, 72 had type 2, and 19 had type 4 cystic CPAMs. Significantly more male patients had type 4 CPAMs. Type 2 CPAMs had a higher frequency of combined

Anesthetic and surgical considerations of giant pericardial cyst: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Pericardial cysts are considered as a rare congenital abnormality, mostly found incidentally. The estimated incidence of pericardial cyst is 1:100,000 and represent approximately 6% of all mediastinal masses. Patients can present with symptoms similar to acute chest pain or right-sided heart failure or can be asymptomatic. PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old female who is known to have hypertension and hypothyroidism presented to the breast clinic with left breast mass that was proved by core needle biopsy as proliferative breast lesion. During the preoperative assessment, the patient r

Uncommon Childhood Unilateral Cervical Giant Thymic Cyst.

Cervical thymic cysts are rare and present in the first decade of life. They constitute 0.3% to 1% of congenital neck masses. Thymic tissue foci, which exist between the mandible and the mediastinum, can be found at the descent of the thymic primordium. Thymic cysts should be considered in pediatric patients who present with cervical neck masses. The diagnosis of thymic cysts can only be made by histopathologic examinations. In recent years, the number of reports of thymic cyst cases have increased, one possible cause being the heightened awareness of thymic cysts among pathologists.
