Extralobar pulmonary sequestration (EPS) is a congenital malformation. In contrast with intralobar sequestration, EPS located outside the normal lung tissue and with a distinct pleural covering. In the current case report, we present a rare case of EPS. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a cyst occurring within the EPS. A 17-year-old male patient presented with chest pain for 1 month. Computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a sharply circumscribed mass at the left side of the lower thoracic vertebrae. No aberrant vessel was observed on contrast-enhanced CT. The preoperative diagn

BACKGROUND: Intrathoracic mesothelial cysts are congenital lesions induced by the abnormal development of the pericardial coelom. There have been a few reports of giant mesothelial cyst of the superior mediastinum, but the preferred treatment remains a controversial topic. We herein report a rare case of successful removal of giant mesothelial cyst that was incidentally detected during a medical checkup.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man with a feeling of mild chest tightness was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of an abnormal shadow of the mediastinum on chest X-ray. Computed t

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies that are most frequently found in the mediastinum along the tracheobronchial tree, especially in the posterior aspect of the superior mediastinum. Bronchogenic cysts have also been reported in intrapulmonary, intrapericardial, abdominal, and retroperitoneal locations. Herein, we report a case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst in the presacral space. The patient was diagnosed based on a post-operative histopathological examination.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation is a pulmonary developmental anomaly arising from an overgrowth of the terminal respiratory bronchioles. This is such a rare malformation that it is not always thought of as a diagnostic possibility.
CASE: In the present case, after a large pulmonary cyst started deviating the mediastinum and following an increase in amniotic fluid volume in the fetus at 28 weeks of gestation, the placement of a catheter for continuous drainage was performed. Subsequent follow-up with ultrasounds and serial echocardiograms revealed normalization o

Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a very rare congenital anomaly occurring due to budding of the primitive foregut, and its common location is the posterior mediastinum. BC when diagnosed prenatally can be treated if it is encroaching on the development of lungs. BC has been reported in other locations such as cervical, thoracic, abdominal sites and also as subcutaneous lesions. Omphalocele is a congenital malformation occurring due to a central defect in the abdominal wall with herniation of the viscera. The nonentity documented here was found in a female fetus with 20 weeks of gestational age. The m

Pericardial cysts are rare, abnormal, benign and usually congenital anomalies with an estimated incidence of 1:100.000 and are caused by an incomplete coalescence of foetal lacunae of pericardium development. The size of pericardial cysts varies from 1 to 5 cm and generally do not cause any symptoms. Pectus excavatum is one of the most frequent chest wall abnormalities with a caved-in appearance of the chest and mostly of unknown pathogenesis. We present a rare case of constrictive pericarditis with a huge pericardial cyst (11.6 × 8.7 × 7.1 cm) and pectus excavatum which led to compression of

This is a case of type 1 congenital pulmonary airway malformation in the left lower lobe of a 26-year-old male. At the age of 1 year, he developed a pulmonary cystic lesion, which was considered to be bronchopulmonary sequestration. He grew up healthy and showed no impairment during exercise; however, giant bullous lesion development along with compressed left upper lobe and mediastinum was recently noted; consequently, the patient was referred to our hospital for further examination. We diagnosed congenital pulmonary airway malformation and performed left lower lobectomy. Postoperative course

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The diagnosis of pericardial syndromes, while occasionally straightforward, includes a wide range of pathologies and is often a well-recognized clinical challenge. The aim of this review is to highlight the key role of the various imaging modalities for the diagnosis and management of the spectrum of pericardial diseases.
RECENT FINDINGS: Cardiac imaging has become an integral part of the diagnostic process often beginning with echocardiography and supported by advanced imaging modalities including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positive emission tomog

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinomas (PSCs) are rare tumors within the sarcomatoid carcinoma group. Giant cell carcinoma of the lung (GCCL) is a rare type of PSCs that consists entirely of highly pleomorphic tumor giant cells; the prognosis is poor.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A patient presented with a single cyst and was diagnosed with GCCL. The patient was a 59-year-old male who was admitted to the hospital with a cough. A chest computerized tomography (CT) scan showed a single, thin-walled cyst containing air in the left upper lobe of the lung. Bronchoscopy revealed chronic bronchitis. Th

A 71-year-old woman presented with dysphagia and acute shortness of breath. Surgical history included a prior thoracotomy overseas for a bronchogenic mesothelial cyst 19 years before. Computed tomography demonstrated a mass within the posterior mediastinum measuring 69 × 70 × 74 mm. A median sternotomy was performed, and after removal of the cyst, repair of the left atrium and pulmonary vessels was undertaken due to the invading nature of the cyst. Intrapericardial bronchogenic cysts are a rare form of congenital cysts arising from the primitive foregut. The cardiac primordia are in close prox

Cervical thymic cyst is rare lesions leading to cervical mass. As it is a rare entity, it might be confused with other congenital neck masses or neoplastic lesions. Preoperative diagnosis is almost impossible. In the present study, a patient who was operated with prediagnosis of branchial cyst and diagnosed with thymic cyst according to the histopathologic examination was presented. A 16-month-old girl was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of growing right neck mass that was realized about 4 months ago. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the neck demonstrated a rim-enhanced hypointens

Thymic cyst is regarded as a rare anomaly, accounting for about 3% of all anterior mediastinal masses. It can be either congenital or acquired. Congenital thymic cysts are usually asymptomatic, with about 50% found incidentally in childhood or adolescence. We report a case of 1-month 23-day-old male baby who was antenatally diagnosed at 32 weeks' gestation. Spontaneous resolution did not take place in the antenatal or neonatal period; instead, there was an increase in size on follow-up imaging. The baby was successfully managed by surgical excision.

Pericardial cysts are rare mediastinal cysts composed of a single fluid-filled mesothelial layer and can be congenital in origin or develop secondary to pericarditis, trauma, or infection. Although most pericardial cysts are asymptomatic, life-threatening complications can occasionally occur. We report on a 57-year-old man with an asymptomatic 9 cm pericardial cyst that was incidentally found as an abnormal cardiac silhouette on routine chest radiography. Further imaging confirmed the presence of a pericardial cyst that was compressing the right atrium. The patient underwent successful video-a

RATIONALE: Fetal giant cervical cyst (FGCC) is a rare congenital anomaly. Sometimes FGCC may extend into the mediastinum, and result in severe tracheal compression, which is a life-threatening event at birth.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a rare case of FGCC, which extended from the right neck into the superior mediastinum, and resulted in severe tracheal compression.
DIAGNOSES: An FGCC was observed by ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 27+4 weeks' gestation (WG). Fetal MRI at 35+1 WG showed that the FGCC was 3.3 × 8.2 × 7.5 cm and extended from the right neck into the su

The presentation of a fast-growing cervical mass necessitates prompt attention due to risk of the mass effect on vital structures and requires preferential screening for infections, bleeding and malignancies in an extensive list of differential diagnoses. This case report describes a 4.5-year-old boy with a fast-growing, unilateral lesion in the neck, with clinical features in keeping with malignant characteristics. Surgical excision with pathocytological examination revealed an exceptional diagnosis of haemorrhage in an ectopic cervical thymic cyst. Thymic cysts are a rare cause of unilateral

PURPOSE: Congenital mediastinal cysts are an uncommon but important diagnostic group. Most of these cysts are benign and asymptomatic in adults. However, some of them are clinically problematic due to the compression of neighboring organs, infection, or perforation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man presented with severe dyspnea. Imaging revealed a mediastinal cyst in the subcarinal space compressing his right pulmonary artery and airway, which was later diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst. Due to quick symptom exacerbation, emergent cyst wall fenestration was performed through video-assisted
