OBJECTIVE: Elabela is a newly discovered peptide hormone. This study aimed to determine the functional effects and mechanisms of action of elabela in rat pulmonary artery and trachea.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Vascular rings isolated from the pulmonary arteries of male Wistar Albino rats were placed in chambers in the isolated tissue bath system. The resting tension was set to 1 g. After the equilibration period, the pulmonary artery rings were contracted with 10-6 M phenylephrine. Once a stable contraction was achieved, elabela was applied cumulatively (10-10-10-6 M) to the vascular rings. To d

AIMS: Patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease (CHD-PAH) after defect correction have a poor prognosis compared with other CHD-PAH patients. Therefore, it is important that these patients are treated as early and effectively as possible. Evidence supporting the use of PAH therapies in patients with corrected CHD-PAH from randomised controlled trials is limited. The purpose of these analyses was to characterise the corrected CHD-PAH patients from the GRIPHON study and examine the response to selexipag.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Out of the 110 patients d

BACKGROUND: The advent of supraglottoplasty clearly has transformed the surgical management of severe laryngomalacia. The condition, however, generally runs a milder course, with spontaneous resolution the norm.
OBJECTIVES: To identify gaps in the knowledge and identify topics for future study.
METHOD: Systematic review of the literature.
RESULTS: The literature suggests that there is a range of abnormalities leading to the typical collapsing upper airway, and that neurological disease, other airway abnormalities, syndromes and gastroesophageal reflux all contribute to disease severity and

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric rhinoplasty has traditionally raised numerous concerns, including its impact on growth as well as the psychological sequelae of undergoing a potentially appearance-altering procedure. Our objective was to critically evaluate available individual patient data relevant to pediatric rhinoplasty, and further discuss perioperative considerations.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE databases. Data extracted and analyzed from included studies included patient demographics, surgical indications, operative approaches, outcomes, complications, revision

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the life expectancy and specify the causes of death among people with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
METHODS: Included were all patients recorded in Alberta provincial databases of inpatients, outpatients, or practitioner claims from 2003 to 2012. People with FAS were identified by ICD-9 code 760.71 and ICD-10 codes Q86.0 and P04.3, and were linked to the Vital Statistics Death Registry to get information about mortality. Life expectancy was estimated by using the life table template developed in the United Kingdom, which is recommended for estimating life expectancy in

OBJECT: Postoperative CSF leakage can be a serious complication after a transsphenoidal surgical approach. An elevated body mass index (BMI) is a significant risk factor for spontaneous CSF leaks. However, there is no evidence correlating BMI with postoperative CSF leak after transsphenoidal surgery. The authors hypothesized that patients with elevated BMI would have a higher incidence of CSF leakage complications following transsphenoidal surgery.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of 121 patients who, between August 2005 and March 2010, underwent endoscopic endonasal tran

Mutations of the SCN5A gene can significantly alter the function of cardiac myocyte sodium channels leading to increased risk of ventricular arrhythmia. Over the past decade, detailed Markov models of the action potential of cardiac cells have been developed. In such models, the effects of a drug can be treated as alterations in on- and off rates between open and inactivated states on one hand, and blocked states on the other hand. Our aim is to compute the rates specifying a drug in order to: (a) restore the steady-state open probability of the mutant channel to that of normal wild type chann

Jaws and branchial arches together are a basic, segmented feature of the vertebrate head. Seven arches develop in the zebrafish embryo (Danio rerio), derived largely from neural crest cells that form the cartilaginous skeleton. In this and the following paper we describe the phenotypes of 109 arch mutants, focusing here on three classes that affect the posterior pharyngeal arches, including the hyoid and five gill-bearing arches. In lockjaw, the hyoid arch is strongly reduced and subsets of branchial arches do not develop. Mutants of a large second class, designated the flathead group, lack se
