Predictors of Delayed Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery: A Case-Control Study in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts are common anomalies, and timely treatment is essential for optimal outcomes. In low- and middle-income countries, surgical delays are frequent, yet contributing factors remain understudied. This study aims to identify and quantify these factors at a tertiary medical center in Ethiopia. METHODS: An institution-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 98 patients between January 2023 and December 2024. Cases included patients undergoing surgery after the recommended age (cleft lip >6 mo; cleft palate >12 mo), whereas controls received timely surgery.

Early presurgical nasoalveolar molding for bilateral cleft lip and palate: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral cleft lip and palate is a severe orofacial anomaly associated with wide alveolar defects and complex nasal deformities. Surgical repair of such a defect is challenging and increases the risk of compromised esthetic and functional outcomes. Early presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) is a non-surgical orthopedic technique used to reduce cleft severity and improve nasal form prior to surgical repair. This case demonstrates the tangible clinical benefits of early intervention in optimizing surgical conditions and outcomes in a complex bilateral cleft presentation. CASE PR

Voice Therapy in Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate: A Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cleft lip and palate (CLP), as one of the most common congenital anomalies in children, can result in voice disorders. Incidence of CLP and its consequential impact may lead to laryngeal pathologies of the vocal cords, and symptoms may include hoarseness, harshness, breathiness, decreased loudness, and abnormal pitch. Considering the limited number of findings on the efficacy of voice therapy in patients with CLP, the purpose of this narrative review is to aggregate the results of previous studies, explore their findings and restrictions, and identify gaps to present more appropria

Unilateral macrostomia repair using modified muscle reconstruction: Long-term anthropometric evaluation of static and smile symmetry.

BACKGROUND: Macrostomia, or transverse facial cleft, substantially impairs facial esthetics and oral function. Although various repair techniques have been reported, achieving satisfactory bilateral symmetry, particularly during dynamic expressions such as smiling, continues to be a challenge. Here, we introduce our modified muscle reconstruction technique for unilateral macrostomia repair and evaluate long-term outcomes in static and smile symmetry using anthropometric measurements. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on all patients who underwent unilateral macrostomia repair at

Oral Candida colonisation and cariogenic bacteria in children and adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) face a disproportionate cariogenic burden, yet the role of oral Candida and its partnership with cariogenic bacteria remains poorly quantified. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesised observational evidence on oral Candida colonisation, cariogenic bacterial carriage, and clinical caries outcomes in non-syndromic CL/P, with GRADE-rated certainty. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 and the Cochrane Handbook (PROSPERO CRD420261402624), six databases were searched from inception to 27 May 2026. Eligible studies were observational desi

ASH2L-mediated H3K4me3 methylation governs palatal development by regulating WNT5B.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts, particularly cleft palate, are among the most common congenital anomalies, imposing substantial functional impairment and psychosocial burden on affected individuals. Emerging evidence implicates epigenetic modifications, especially histone lysine methylation, as critical regulators of embryonic development, yet their precise roles in palatogenesis remain poorly defined. The H3K4 methyltransferase complexes, which require the core subunit ASH2L for full enzymatic activity, govern transcriptional activation during development; however, whether ASH2L-mediated H3K4me

Predictors and Factors Associated With Delayed Primary Cleft Surgery in Bangladesh.

Background Delayed primary cleft surgery remains a major challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where barriers to timely access coexist with medically necessary postponements. Understanding factors associated with delayed surgery and the relative contribution of presentation-related and medical reasons may help improve comprehensive cleft care. This study aimed to identify predictors of delayed primary cleft surgery, characterize the distribution of reasons for surgical delay, and evaluate factors associated with delayed presentation among patients treated in a comprehensive cl

Longitudinal Development of Facial Symmetry after Primary Cleft Lip Repair: A Comparison of Subperiosteal and Supraperiosteal Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Primary cleft lip repair aims to restore both function and aesthetics of the nasolabial complex. Although several surgical techniques provide comparable functional outcomes, their long-term effects on facial symmetry remain unclear. This study compared postoperative facial symmetry following supraperiosteal and subperiosteal primary cleft lip repair using standardized photographic and digital anthropometric analysis. METHODS: This retrospective monocentric study included 46 patients with non-syndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate. Patients underwent either supraperiosteal repai

Preliminary Reliability and Validity of Asynchronous Speech Screening to Support Clinical Triage for Children With Cleft Palate and Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Children with cleft and craniofacial conditions require ongoing monitoring and evaluation to manage persistent speech and resonance disorders. Regular assessment allows clinicians to detect emerging problems, evaluate intervention efficacy, and adjust treatment plans accordingly. However, socioeconomic and logistical barriers place many children at risk for sporadic or absent follow-up, leading to undiagnosed or underaddressed velopharyngeal dysfunction. This pilot study examined the reliability and use of asynchronous speech and resonance screenings to identify children who need comp

A Case Report on Multiple Impacted Teeth: A Three-Dimensional Radiological Evaluation by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Multiple impacted teeth refer to a clinical condition where more than one tooth fails to erupt beyond its chronological age of eruption and remains partially or fully submerged in the jawbone. Multiple impacted teeth commonly arise from conditions such as cleft palate and cleft lip, genetically linked syndromes, and pathological conditions like mucopolysaccharidosis. Impacted teeth, or wisdom teeth, commonly occur in the maxillary or mandibular third molars. Still, other teeth, such as maxillary canine and mandibular premolars, can also be affected. Our case discusses an incidental finding of

Cleft Lip Repair Associated Serratia marcescens Infection: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Cleft lip deformity is the most common birth defect, characterized by failure of the union of the medial nasal process and maxillary prominence. A variable range of cleft lips could be unilateral or bilateral, complete or incomplete, cleft lip with or without cleft palate. Diagnosis of a cleft lip is typically made through clinical examinations. Surgical repair is the ultimate management of cleft lips, which restores their normal appearance. Repairing a cleft lip could be associated with certain complications, including infection, dehiscence, notching, and post-op hypertrophic scarring. Nevert
