A dysmorphic newborn with 45,X,der(1)inv(1)(p13;qter)t(Y;1)(pter-->q11;p13),-Y de novo karyotype.

A dysmorphic newborn with 45,x,der(1)inv(1)(p13;qter)t(y;1)(pter-->q11;p13),-Y de novo karyotype: Y/autosome translocations are very rare chromosomal rearrangements. In most cases, the long arm of the Y chromosome is translocated onto an autosome and most patients are referred because of male infertility. Y/1 translocations are very rare, and have been reported in seven patients so far. Pericentric inversions may be seen in all chromosomes and are not associated with phenotypic abnormalities. Here we report a 6-day old male baby with prenatal growth retardation, frontal bossing, hypertelorism,

Real-time magnetic resonance imaging aids prenatal diagnosis of isolated cleft palate.

OBJECTIVE: Cleft of the secondary palate without cleft lip is difficult to visualize sonographically. This study was performed to assess the utility of sonography, standard magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and real-time MR imaging in the diagnosis of isolated cleft palate. METHODS: We prospectively assessed 5 fetuses at risk for isolated cleft palate on the basis of family history, micrognathia, or both, using sonography and standard and real-time single-shot fast spin echo MR sequences. Written informed consent was obtained under our Institutional Review Board-approved Health Insurance Porta

Combined anomalies of the palate in Mohr syndrome: is preoperative electromyography of the palate useful?

The authors present a girl with typical characteristics of oral-facial-digital syndrome type II (Mohr syndrome) with a cleft soft palate and pendulous tongue nodules. Because of feeding difficulties, electromyography was performed of both morphologically identical halves of the soft palate. One half showed a normal muscle action potential and in the other half electrical silence was registered. Exploratory surgery during palatoplasty showed a fatty hamartoma in the half of the palate in which no electric potentials had been registered.

Pierre-Robin syndrome associated with Chiari type I malformation.

CASE REPORT: Pierre-Robin syndrome (PRS) is a rare congenital malformation that shows severe micrognathia and cleft soft palate. A 15-year-old boy who was admitted with occipital headache and gait disturbance was diagnosed with PRS. Radiological evaluation revealed severe herniation of the cerebellar tonsil and multiple craniovertebral osseous anomalies. We carried out foramen magnum decompression (FMD) with duroplasty. Postoperative MRI showed the cerebellar tonsil was freed from strangulation. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: This patient presented with the common finding between PRS and Chiari type

Surgical cleft soft palate repair in a foal.

An Anglo-Arab foal with bilateral postprandial nasal discharge was diagnosed as having a full-length defect of the soft palate. Surgical repair was attempted using a combination of two surgical approaches. Initially a mandibular symphysiotomy approach was used. The posterior portion of the defect did not heal adequately, so a ventral laryngotomy, bisecting the body of the thyroid cartilage and extending to a pharyngotomy approach, was performed 5 months later. The foal has since matured fully despite a slight unilateral nasal discharge. This case report demonstrates that these two surgical app

New mental retardation syndrome associated with ocular colobomas, cleft palate, and genital, skeletal, and craniofacial abnormalities.

We describe three Canadian brothers of Cree origin, with a previously undescribed pattern of malformation including distinctive craniofacial abnormalities with triangular facies, hypertelorism, low-set and posteriorly rotated ears, ocular colobomas, ptosis, brachycephaly with widely separated sutures, cleft soft palate, undescended testes, bifid scrotum and hypospadius, wide webbed neck, webbed fingers, pectus excavatum and hypersegmented sternum, and severe psychomotor retardation. The presence of normal brain imaging and physical growth distinguishes them from other syndromes with overlappin

The dentofacial manifestations of XXXXY syndrome: a case report.

This paper presents a six-year-old patient with XXXXY syndrome, whose oral findings included a cleft soft palate, hyper- or meso-taurodontism in eight primary molars and in the mandibular permanent first molars, five congenitally missing premolars, and delayed development of the permanent tooth germs. The maxillary and mandibular primary central incisors were in a cross-bite relationship. Cephalometric findings showed a short ramus of the mandible and a short maxilla in the anterioposterior plane. The anteroposterior jaw relationship was in harmony. The cross-bite was considered to be due to t

Semilobar holoprosencephaly, coronal craniosynostosis, and multiple congenital anomalies: a severe expression of the Genoa syndrome or a newly recognized syndrome?

We report on a female newborn with holoprosencephaly, craniosynostosis, and multiple congenital anomalies including cloverleaf skull, Dandy-Walker malformation, bilateral microphthalmia, cleft soft palate, congenital scoliosis, hypoplastic nails and coarctation of aorta. Some of these features are consistent with the diagnosis of the Genoa syndrome, (MIM 601370) a rare autosomal recessive disorder recently described. The findings of other serious and previously undescribed malformations, however, raises the possibility of a newly recognized disorder.

Lipoma of the cleft soft palate: a case report of a rare congenital anomaly.

Congenital tumors of the oral cavity are extremely uncommon. The teratoid tumors (epiganthi, dermoid, and hairy polyps) account for almost all of the reported cases and are not infrequently associated with cleft of the soft palate. Of the remaining tumors in the pediatric cleft palate population, infantile lipoma of the oral cavity is exceedingly rare. A case of a congenital lipoma associated with a cleft of the soft palate is presented. The review of the literature, the description of the lesion, the diagnosis, and the management of this finding are outlined.

A retrospective study of hearing, speech and language function in children with clefts following palatoplasty and veloplasty procedures at 18-24 months of age.

Many cleft palate teams currently schedule palatoplasty and veloplasty within the child's first year of life. At Hannover Medical School, palatoplasty and veloplasty are performed at approximately 18-24 months of age. It was questioned which speech and language outcome was achieved and whether it may be influenced by: (1) type and extent of the clefts; (2) velopharyngeal inadequacy; and (3) hearing disorders. A retrospective evaluation of data collected from 1985 to 1993 was performed summarizing receptive and expressive speech and language skills of 370 children aged 4.5 years. Cleft types we

Severe craniofacial malformations and deglutition dysfunction in a brother and sister: new syndrome?

We report seemingly unique craniofacial malformations and deglutition dysfunction in a sib pair. The boy had right maxillomandibular alveolar synechae, ankylosis of right temporomandibular joint, hypoplasia of the zygomatico-maxillary region, nasal deviation to the left, choanal stenosis, and exophthalmos due to shallow orbita. His ears were apparently low-set with prominent lobules. He had severe gastroesophageal reflux and increasing respiratory problems and died at age 11 months. Psychomotor development was normal. His 10-year-old sister had similar craniofacial malformations and a cleft so

Toriello-Carey syndrome: evidence for X-linked inheritance.

Toriello-Carey syndrome is characterized by agenesis of the corpus callosum, telecanthus, short palpebral fissures, Robin sequence, abnormal ears, cardiac anomalies, and hypotonia. We describe two patients with Toriello-Carey syndrome and call attention to an unbalanced sex ratio. The first patient, a male, was born at term by Cesarean section and manifests micrognathia, cleft soft palate, hypoplastic right ear, anotia on the left side, cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, hydrocephalus, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and hypoplastic left heart. He died 2 days after birth. The second patient is the

Speech results after repair of the cleft soft palate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the speech results of five different techniques of repair of only the cleft soft palate and also to assess the effect of timing of repair on speech results. A total of 184 patients (73 males, 111 females) underwent either a Dorrance repair (25 patients), a Wardill repair (41 patients), a Perko repair (19 patients), a von Langenbeck repair (79 patients), or a Furlow Z-plasty (20 patients) between 1964 and 1989. Articulation, intelligibility, and resonance were assessed by usually two but at least one speech therapist. All the children underwent video

The oral manifestations of Apert syndrome.

As part of an ongoing study of 119 patients with the Apert syndrome, extensive data were available for the analysis of oral manifestations, including mouth shape, lip posture, palatal morphology, dental anomalies, and malocclusion. Findings included a characteristic trapezoidal-shaped mouth. Cleft soft palate or bifid uvula was found in approximately 75%. A Byzantine-arch shaped palate was recorded in almost all patients. Dental anomalies included severely delayed eruption, ectopic eruption, and shovel-shaped incisors. Malocclusion tended to be severe with mesial molar occlusion, mandibular ov
