We report on an infant boy with duplication of part of 16p and partial deficiency of 9p: 46,XY, -9, + der(9)t(9;16)(p24;p13.1)mat. The child has the typical phenotype of dup(16p) even though the extra piece of 16p is small (16p13.1----pter). Manifestations include severe developmental delay, rounded face, sparse hair, ear anomalies, hypertelorism, cleft soft palate, a thin vermilion border of the upper lip, and left renal dysgenesis. We review 16p duplications.

Cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCM) is a very rare entity with oro-facial features closely resembling Pierre-Robin anomaly (1,2). We describe a patient with typical features: severe micrognathia, glossoptosis, central cleft soft palate and multiple posterior rib-gap defects seen on chest radiograph. Respiratory distress which was evident soon after birth was relieved by an oro-pharyngeal airway. He suffered from a cardiorespiratory arrest and succumbed, presumably secondary to aspiration of milk feeds, before a tracheostomy could be performed.

X-ray cephalometry was used for the assessment of the configuration of the skeletal and soft tissue profile in 81 adult males with isolated cleft palate. They were assessed in three subgroups, i. e. with complete and incomplete clefts and with clefts of the soft palate alone and were compared with a matched group of controls consisting of 50 normal males, as well as with the situation in the earlier examined series with unilateral cleft lip and palate. In isolated cleft palate both the upper and lower jaws were retruded. The maxilla was most markedly retruded in incomplete clefts and most slig

A 5-year-old Japanese boy showed nephritis similar to, but distinct from, that in Alport syndrome. Nephrotic syndrome without hematuria was noticed at age 2, although renal biopsy at age 4 revealed widespread irregular thickening of the glomerular basement membrane with splitting of the lamina densa on electron microscopy, characteristic of nephritis in Alport syndrome. Sensorineural deafness was noticed at age 4 weeks by no auditory brain stem response, unusually early for Alport syndrome. Goodpasture antigen and amyloid P component were found in the glomerular basement membrane. Thus, the an

The authors present an account on a 12-year-old girl with ectomesodermal dysgenesis of the Rieger type syndrome. The disease was manifested at the age of nine months by transient diffuse corneal opacity, while the intraocular pressure was normal. In addition to typical corneal changes and changes in the angle of the chamber other associated somatic symptoms included megalocornea, high myoptic astigmatism, cleft soft palate, hypoplasia of the upper jaw, partial anodontia, marked thoracic kyphosis, scoliosis, generalized hypermobility and taxicity of the joints and torticollis. Examination revea

Oro-nasal fistulae often occur after the primary closure of the hard and soft palate cleft and in particular at the junction between the hard and soft palate. This is the area where maximal tension is exerted during the intravelar veloplasty closure procedure. Six surgical modifications of the primary intravelar veloplasty technique are described and each is specifically adapted according to the existing anatomical form and defect of the cleft soft palate, so that the occurrence of an oro-nasal fistula may be prevented. The surgical procedures may be divided into two main groups, namely those

Congenital agastria has never before been reported. Congenital microgastria is rare but is well documented. We have cared for a Melanesian child in whom there was no radiological, anatomical, or physiological evidence of either a rudimentary stomach or a pylorus. The esophagus joined the first part of the duodenum directly. At this esophago-duodenal junction there was microscopic evidence of fundic-type gastric mucosa. The intestine was normally rotated and there was a functioning spleen. The child also had a severe micrognathia and a cleft soft palate and required a tracheostomy to relieve up

A male infant with partial trisomy 6q is described. This patient shares features with 12 previously reported cases including hypertelorism, cleft soft palate, bow shaped mouth, micrognathia, short, laterally webbed neck, clubbing of hands and feet, syndactyly, and growth retardation. In addition, visceral anomalies less frequently reported are described. These observations may extend the phenotypic characterisation of the trisomy 6q syndrome.

Cat's eye syndrome is a very rare disease with many congenital anomalies. Until the end of 1983, 35 cases had been reported, but only 5 cases were associated with cleft palate, and only 1 patient was operated on. A 4-year-old male child had coloboma of the iridochoroid, cleft soft palate, hypertelorism with an antimongoloid slant of the eyes, epicanthal folds, hearing deficit, congenital heart disease (pulmonary arteriovenous fistula), mental and growth retardation, and a 47,XY + marker chromosome. The patient did not have anal atresia, preauricular skin tags, microphthalmia, depressed nasal b

A child had complete mandibular agenesis, with associated anomalies of microstomia, left choanal stenosis, and a cleft soft palate. This child had evidence of disruption in development at about the four-week stage by the persistence of several developmental remnants, specifically, the buccopharyngeal membrane, tongue remnants, and the laryngotracheal groove. The etiology of this condition is unclear at this time.

Seven foals, 2 horses, and 2 calves were presented to the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at New Bolton Center and the Large Animal Clinic at Auburn University for surgical repair of cleft palate. All animals had preexisting pneumonia. Initial repair of cleft palate in 6 foals, 2 horses, and 2 calves was performed via mandibular symphysiotomy. Primary repair of cleft soft palate in a foal was attempted through a pharyngotomy incision after fracture of the basal hyoid bone; however, exposure was inadequate and mandibular symphysiotomy had to be done. Dehiscence of a portion of the

A ring 4 chromosome was found in a boy with low birth weight, microcephaly, micrognathia, rounded broad nose, malformed ears, cleft soft palate, and retardation in growth and development. The ring 4 is formed by union of the ends after breakage and loss of the terminal parts of the short (p) arm and the long (q) arm. G-banded chromosome studies showed our patient to have a union at p16q35. Clinical findings in our patient were compared with those in others with the union at p16q35, p15q35, and p16q33. The patients with p15q35 had a deletion of more p-arm genetic material than those with the p1

We recently described a new lethal malformation syndrome, characterized by typical craniofacial dysmorphism, cleft soft palate, distal limb hypoplasia and diaphragmatic defects. We here report an additional case, which tends to confirm that this syndrome represents a distinct entity among the lethal malformation syndromes.

Two female sibs are reported with a possibly new lethal malformation pattern, the major anomalies of which are: coarse face with small eyes and cloudy corneae, cleft soft palate, hypoplasia and absence of lobulation of both lungs, diaphragmatic defects, digitalisation of thumbs and distal limb deformities.

A technique for the surgical repair of a cleft soft palate in the horse is described. A symphysiotomy approach was employed to repair the anterior end of the cleft palate, and the posterior part was approached via a pharyingotomy incision.

A syndrome of facial dysmorphism, pre- and postnatal growth deficiency, developmental delay and minor malformations is described in two siblings. The facial anomalies consist of short nose with low nasal bridge, hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, ptosis of eyelid (patient 2), lowset ears, wide mouth with protruding lips and relative prognathism. Patient 2 in addition had a cleft soft palate and a hypoplastic phalanx of his fifth fingers. Both siblings were exposed to extraordinary high levels of phenobarbitone (5.0-8.6 mg/100 ml) in utero. The same clinical picture has been reported by others fo
