Hearing Loss in 5-Year-Old and 12-Year-Old Patients With a Cleft Palate and Evaluating Standardized Assessment Methods.

This study describes the results of hearing assessment in patients with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP±L) enrolled in the International Consortium for Health Outcome Measures set for cleft lip and palate (ICHOM set). Other cleft initiatives were examined to provide an overview of the hearing assessment used. Data were analyzed from 390 patients with CP±L, aged 5 or 12 years, who were followed up according to the ICHOM set between 2016 and 2023. Statistical analysis evaluated pure-tone average (PTA) differences by age, cleft phenotype, sex, ventilation tube (VT) insertion, isolated

Radiographic Evaluation of Impacted and Transmigrant Canines: Prevalence and Sex-Based Differences in an Orthodontic Cohort.

Background/Objectives: Impacted teeth are characterized by having more than three-quarters of root development completed, however failing to erupt or demonstrate imminent eruption, as evidenced both by clinical and radiographic evaluation. Canine impaction is an entity of clinical significance considering its potential to affect both oral function and facial aesthetics. If not appropriately managed, this condition may adversely impact functional occlusion and structural smile integrity. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of impacted and transmigrant canines in a Greek o

Nasal Glioma in a Newborn With Suspected Pai Syndrome: Surgical and Diagnostic Insights.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal glial heterotopias, or nasal gliomas, are rare congenital midline lesions composed of ectopic, non-neoplastic glial tissue. They are often mistaken for encephaloceles due to overlapping clinical and embryologic features. Accurate diagnosis is essential to avoid complications associated with surgical intervention. METHODS: The authors present the case of a newborn female infant born at 35 weeks and 6 days of gestation with a midline nasal mass, respiratory distress, and multiple dysmorphic features. Prenatal and postnatal imaging revealed a pedunculated nasal lesion without

Implementation of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis for Patients With Pierre Robin Sequence in a Developing Country Through International Collaboration: A Paradigm for Success.

OBJECTIVE: Though it has made significant strides, Vietnam remains a resource-constrained country of 98 million people. Vietnam National Children's Hospital (VNCH) provides tertiary care to a catchment of 40 million people and is the sole national children's hospital. As such, it is one of the few referral centers in the country equipped to take care of patients diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) as this requires pulmonary, critical care, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery expertise. Before 2015, the only surgical options were tongue lip adhesion or tracheostomy. Only 20% of patients

Novel Technique for Median Cleft Lip Comprising the Simultaneous Formation of the Columella, Philtrum, and Cupid's Bow.

Numerous surgical techniques for median cleft lip repair have been described; however, most cause excessively sharp peaks or the collapse of Cupid's bow. We report a technique for median cleft lip repair using a mucosal skin flap and full-thickness skin graft and 15 years of follow-up. Our technique provides acceptable formation of the columella, philtrum, and the two peaks of Cupid's bow. In this paper, we cite our previously reported techniques and add new findings and discussion based on the long-term postoperative outcomes of this procedure. Advantages and disadvantages of this technique a

DeepFace: Deep-learning-based framework to contextualize orofacial-cleft-related variants during human embryonic craniofacial development.

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are among the most common human congenital birth defects. Previous multiethnic studies have identified dozens of associated loci for both cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) and cleft palate alone (CP). Although several nearby genes have been highlighted, the "casual" variants are largely unknown. Here, we developed DeepFace, a convolutional neural network model, to assess the functional impact of variants by SNP activity difference (SAD) scores. The DeepFace model is trained with 204 epigenomic assays from crucial human embryonic craniofacial developmental st

Prenatal diagnosis of a severe form of frontonasal dysplasia with severe limb anomalies, hydrocephaly, a hypoplastic corpus callosum, and a ventricular septal defect using 3D ultrasound: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Frontonasal dysplasia (FND) is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from the underdevelopment of the frontonasal process, and it can be syndromic or nonsyndromic. The typical features of FND include a deformed nose and ocular hypertelorism, which are sometimes associated with cleft lip and/or palate. Only approximately 10 cases of prenatally diagnosed nonsyndromic FND have been reported in the past 30 years. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old woman (G2P1) was referred to our center at 20 gestational weeks for bilateral hydrocephaly. We detected typical features of FND, including seve
