DYNC2H1 splicing variants causing severe prenatal short-rib polydactyly syndrome and postnatal orofaciodigital syndrome.

The DYNC2H1 gene has been associated with short-rib polydactyly syndrome (SRPS), among other skeletal ciliopathies. Two cases are presented of distinctive phenotypes resulting from splicing variants in DYNC2H1. The first is a 14-week-old fetus with enlarged nuchal translucency, oral hamartoma, malformed uvula, bifid epiglottis, short ribs, micromelia, long bone agenesis, polysyndactyly, heart defect, pancreatic cysts, multicystic dysplastic kidney, megabladder and trident acetabulum. A ciliopathies NGS panel revealed two compound heterozygous variants in DYNC2H1: c.7840-18T>G r.7841_7964del p.

An effective ultrasound fetal palate screening software based on the "sequential sector scan through the oral fissure" and three-dimensional ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts are one of the most common congenital malformations of the fetal face and ultrasound is mainly responsible for its diagnosis. It is difficult to view the fetal palate, so there is currently no unified standard for fetal palate screening, and the diagnosis of cleft palate is not included in the relevant prenatal ultrasound screening guidelines. Many prenatal diagnoses for cleft palate are missed due to the lack of effective screening methods. Therefore, it is imperative to increase the display rate of the fetal palate, which would improve the detection rate and diag

Trends of cleft surgeries and predictors of late primary surgery among children with cleft lip and palate at the University College Hospital, Nigeria: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cleft of the lip and palate is the most common craniofacial birth defect with a worldwide incidence of one in 700 live births. Early surgical repairs are aimed at improving appearance, speech, hearing, psychosocial development and avoiding impediments to social integration. Many interventions including the Smile Train partner model have been introduced to identify and perform prompt surgical procedures for the affected babies. However, little is known about the trends of the incidence and surgical procedures performed at our hospital. Nothing is also known about the relationship be

The Concept of Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair.

Surgical treatment of unilateral cleft lip is a difficult procedure, partly because many anatomical variants exist. The cleft lip has no excess tissue; hence, tissue from the cleft side cannot reach the normal side, even if all white lip tissue from the cleft side is preserved. Therefore, a basic concept is necessary to perform surgery according to a patient's anatomical diversity. Herein, we describe the essential concepts of unilateral cleft lip surgery. Specifically, the surgeon can insert the Millard's rotation advancement flap, Onizuka's small triangular flap, and Noordhoff's vermilion tr

Helical distraction is superior to linear distraction in maxillary distraction osteogenesis: an in silico study.

This in silico kinematic study was performed to evaluate the best attainable outcomes of maxillary distraction osteogenesis given the constraints of linear and helical motion. The study sample included the retrospective records of 30 patients with maxillary retrusion who had been treated with distraction or had been recommended this treatment. The primary outcomes were the errors of linear and helical distraction. The study measured two types of error: misalignment of key upper jaw landmarks and misalignment of the occlusion. Concerning the misalignment of key landmarks, the median misalignmen

Tessier 30 Facial Cleft: A Rare Craniofacial Anomaly.

AIM: Surgical correction of median mandibular cleft with ankylossia. BACKGROUND: Orofacial developmental abnormalities that involve the upper lip and face are the most common variety. The midline cleft of the mandible is one of the rarest categorized as Tessier #30, which extends along the midline of the mandible, along with ankyloglossia or aglossia. The morphogenesis of craniofacial clefts could be due to the lack of fusion or normal development of the facial processes in the first branchial arch or failure of the mesodermal penetration into the midline.
