Anterior Maxillary Distraction Osteogenesis With Bone-borne Intraoral Buccal Devices for Maxillary Hypoplasia With Cleft Lip and Palate.

Anterior maxillary distraction osteogenesis (AMDO) surgery for cleft lip and palate involves distraction of a segment of the anterior maxilla and advancement using 2 intraoral buccal bone-borne distraction devices. The anterior part of the maxilla is advanced anteriorly with less relapse which increases maxillary length and does not affect speech. We aimed to evaluate the effects of AMDO, including lateral cephalometric changes. Seventeen patients who had undergone this procedure were included in this retrospective study. The distractors were activated by 0.5 mm twice a day after a 3-day laten

Morphological and molecular characterization of Contracaecum australe (Nematoda: Anisakidae) parasitizing Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Aves: Phalacrocoracidae) on the north coast of Brazil.

For the first time in Brazil, Contracaecum australe is recorded parasitizing Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Aves, Suliformes, Phalacrocoracidae) from the Marine Extractive Reserve of Soure on Marajó Island, Brazilian Amazon. Its morphology revealed a body with a transversally striated cuticle, smooth or slightly cleft interlabia, lips with auricles, labial papillae, and conspicuous amphids. In males, the presence of the median papilla on the upper lip of the cloaca and spicules that reach almost half of the body of the parasite. These morphological characters, added to the number and distribution

The burden of psychiatric disorders associated with orofacial cleft pathology among children in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with orofacial cleft (OFC) may be at a higher risk of developing psychiatric disorders (PD) than the general population. We determined the risk of psychiatric diagnoses in children with OFC in Canada. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study used health administrative data from the province of Ontario, Canada. Children with OFC who were born between April 1, 1994, and March 31, 2017, in Ontario were matched to five non-OFC children based on sex, date of birth, and mother's age. We determined the rate of events and time-to-event for first diagnosis of P

Van Der Woude Syndrome: A Case Series at Chu D' Treichville, Abidjan, Cote D' Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Van der Woude syndrome (VWS), characterised mainly by lower lip pits and orofacial cleft (OFC), is the most common syndrome associated with an OFC. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant, high penetrance disorder with variable phenotypic expression and caused by the genetic mutation of the interferon regulatory factor 6 gene (IRF6). This study showcases the syndrome's variable phenotypic expressivity in six cases seen at Chu d' Treichvile, Abidjan, and Cote d'Ivoire. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of six cases at the above-named hospital. Data collected include age at presentat

Median Cleft Lip.

Complete or partial lip clefts in the midline of the upper lip are defined as median clefts of the upper lip. In 1974, Tessier numbered the craniofacial clefts from 0 to 14 counterclockwise in a study involving 336 patients. Upper lip midline clefts are named Tessier 0 clefts. Despite the diversity in classifications, upper lip midline cleft is rare. Its incidence among cleft patients varies between 0.43% and 0.73%. If the more common forms of cleft lip and palate are not taken into account, the incidence of atypical cleft is estimated at 1/10 5 . A median upper lip cleft can be defined as a c

Midline cleft of the upper lip associated with a microform unilateral cleft and a proboscis-like structure: a case report.

A midline or median cleft lip is rare, and a midline cleft associated with a unilateral cleft and a proboscis-like structure is rarer still. We present a case managed at our center in which a 5-year-old male had a median cleft of the upper lip with an associated 'proboscis' and a microform unilateral cleft lip.
