In Ethiopia, cleft lip and/or palate is a major public health concern. In this study, we compiled clinical statistics on patients who presented during 7 years of surgical medical aid missions and examined possible background factors underlying the striking imbalance in cleft types (i.e., the apparent absence of isolated cleft palate) compared with those in developed countries. All 150 patients examined during surgical medical aid missions conducted between 2013 and 2019 were included. Age, sex, cleft type, surgery performed, and reasons for cancellation were analyzed retrospectively. The mean

OBJECTIVE: Conductive olfactory losses mainly involve obstruction of the olfactory cleft (OC) and diminished OC airflow. This study investigated the association between abnormal nasal structure and OC airflow.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis to identify studies on the effect of the nasal structure on the OC airflow and olfaction.
RESULTS: A total of 11 studies were included. Nasal vestibule morphological variabilities directly impact the transport of molecules in odorant-laden air to the OC. A grea

Multiple surgeries for patients with cleft lip and palate may be required to repair secondary deformities after the completion of cleft repair. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the three-dimensional nasal morphology in patients with unilateral cleft palate who underwent cleft lip and palate repair but did not undergo terminal nasal repair. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and SINOMED databases were searched from inception until December 2020. Studies involving patients ages ≥6 years with cleft lip and palate who did not undergo terminal

OBJECTIVE: The study was conducted to examine the patients with abnormalities of cleft lip and/or palate and its association with different types of malocclusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive study was done among 168 patients with abnormalities of cleft lip and/or palate. Angle's classification of malocclusion was applied for assessment of occlusion as Class I, Class II, and Class III. The types of oral clefts classification such as cleft lip unilateral and cleft lip bilateral, cleft palate (CP), unilateral cleft lip with palate (UCLP) and bilateral cleft lip with palate (BCLP) was

AIM: To examine the prevalence of different types of dental anomalies in children with nonsyndromic cleft lip, unilateral cleft lip-palate, and bilateral cleft lip-palate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 90 patients (aged 4-20 years) affected by isolated cleft lip, unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate was examined. Cleft patients were classified into one of three groups according to cleft type: (1) Unilateral Cleft Lip-Palate, (2) Bilateral Cleft Lip-Palate, and (3) Cleft Lip. Intraoral exams, panoramic radiographs and dental casts, were used to analyse the prevalence of the vario

Craniofacial anomalies, eye malformations, and permanent flexures of the forelimbs are common malformations seen in ruminants grazing semiarid rangelands of Northeastern Brazil. To investigate the cause of these malformations, we fed 2 suspected plants, Mimosa tenuiflora or Prosopis juliflora, to groups of 4 pregnant goats each. Fresh green M. tenuiflora was collected daily and fed ad libitum to 4 goats in group 1 throughout pregnancy. This treatment group also received a supplemental feed concentrate equivalent to 1% body weight. Four goats in group 2 received a ration with 70% of P. juliflor

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of the presence of a soft tissue bridge (Simonart's band) in patients with complete cleft lip and alveolus and complete cleft lip and palate.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SAMPLE: We assessed 407 consecutive unoperated patients first attending the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies of University of São Paulo, in Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil, in the year 2000. The patients were classified as presenting complete cleft of the primary palate or of the primary and secondary palate, unilateral or bilateral, as follows: unilateral cleft lip, bilate

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dental arch relationships and dimensions, relative to an age matched noncleft sample, in Caucasian 3-year-old children with repaired unilateral cleft lip (UCL) or unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP).
DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional, case-control study performed in Scotland, U.K.
PARTICIPANTS: Eleven children with repaired unilateral cleft lip, 16 children with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate, and 78 children as controls.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Dental arch relationships and linear arch dimensions.
RESULTS: Prevalence of Class III incisor relationship

We describe a female neonate with a unique constellation of features including anophthalmia and cryptophthalmos, temporal remnant "eye tags," bilateral cleft lip, unilateral cleft palate, a proboscis with absent nasal septum, choanal atresia, micrognathia, square stoma, and bilateral external auditory canal atresia. Gross brain structure, pituitary function, limbs, trunk, and genitalia were normal. Skeletal survey, echocardiogram and abdominal viscera were unremarkable except for a split central sinus of the right kidney. BAER exam indicated she could hear and temporal CT confirmed the presenc

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of aneuploidy and additional major anatomic abnormalities in fetuses and neonates with cleft lip with or without cleft palate.
METHODS: All cases of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (cleft lip/cleft palate) occurring in Utah from 1995 through 1999 were reviewed by using the Utah Birth Defect Network population-based surveillance system. All pregnancy outcomes are included (stillborn, live born, and termination) in this analysis.
RESULTS: Of 263 cases of cleft lip/cleft palate, 72 (27.4%) were unilateral cleft lip, 112 (42.6%) were unilateral cleft

The understanding and management of all aspects of unilateral cleft lip deformities continue to evolve. Just as we are entering the era of exciting advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of craniofacial disorders, expansion of our understanding of the dynamic relationships of the structural and soft-tissue components of cleft deformities has assisted surgeons in achieving progressively improved and consistent outcomes for these patients. The anatomic and physiologic complexity of unilateral cleft lip deformities has been recognized for centuries, and generations of researchers have

It has been proposed that the hyperthermia in pregnant women may be associated with birth defects in their offsprings. We analysed the retrospective interview data on probable febrile illness during critical period of orofacial clefts development in 992 mothers of boys and girls with three types of orofacial clefts--cleft lip, unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate and cleft palate. A number of mother that gave the positive answer was relatively high and varied from 24% to 33%. There were no significant differences of the incidence of mother febrile illness between three groups of orofac
