OBJECTIVES: Although no universal consensus exists on treatment of cleft palates, early hard palate closure is commonly performed. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of a vomer flap for early hard palate closure on residual palatal cleft width in patients with a unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven UCLP patients were retrospectively divided into two groups. Group A consisted of 25 patients who underwent early lip closure and simultaneous hard palate closure using a vomer flap. Group B included 22 patients who had lip clos

OBJECTIVE: To compare three-dimensionally the midfacial hard- and soft-tissue asymmetries between the affected and the unaffected sides and determine the relationship between the hard tissue and the overlying soft tissue in patients with nonsyndromic complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis.
METHODS: The maxillofacial regions of 26 adults (18 men, 8 women) with nonsyndromic UCLP were scanned by CBCT and reconstructed by three-dimensional dental imaging. The frontal-view midfacial analysis was based on a 3 × 3 grid of vertical and horizon

OBJECTIVE: Vomer flap repair is assumed to improve maxillary growth because of reduced scarring in growth-sensitive areas of the palate. Our aim was to evaluate whether facial growth in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate was significantly affected by the technique of hard palate repair (vomer flap versus two-flap).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this retrospective longitudinal study, we analyzed 334 cephalometric radiographs from 95 patients with nonsyndromic complete unilateral cleft lip and palate who underwent hard palate repair by two different techniques (vomer flap versus two-fla

INTRODUCTION: An analysis was made of three different syndromes associated with p63 gene mutations, known as ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC), ankyloblepharon-ectodermal dysplasia clefting syndrome (AEC or Hay-Wells) and Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome (RHS). The postoperative complications associated with their cleft reconstructions were also evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extensive demographic information, in particular of the clinical appearances, associated malformations, and the types and complications of the reconstructive surgical procedures, were recorded of these sy

Fetal face is the key anatomical location, both psychologically and clinically for the mother and the clinician. Ultrasound prenatal examination of the maxillofacial region allows to evaluate the fetal face in the first weeks of gestation. In ambulatory intravaginal ultrasound, sensitivity of the facial defect detection is 20-30% in cases without the risk of TORCH and fetal abnormalities, which may arouse suspicion of the presence of facial malformation. Facial defects form a wide group of pathologies. Unfortunately challenges connected with 2D and 3D ultrasound imaging cause frequent misdiagn

We compared the early speech outcomes of 40 consecutive children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who had been treated according to different 2-stage protocols: the Malek protocol (soft palate closure without intravelar veloplasty at 3 months; lip and hard palate repair at 6 months) (n=20), and the Talmant protocol (cheilorhinoplasty and soft palate repair with intravelar veloplasty at 6 months; hard palate closure at 18 months) (n=20). We compared the speech assessments obtained at a mean (SD) age of 3.3 (0.35) years after treatment by the same surgeon. The main outcome me

The present study compared the height of the palatal vault in dental casts from 320 10-year-old children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) operated on with the push-back technique according to Wardill-Kilner (W-K) with patients operated on with delayed hard palate closure (DHPC). The palatal height in patients operated on with the DHPC technique was found to be significantly higher than in patients operated on with the W-K technique. This coincides with better maxillary growth and better speech in the DHPC group.

There have been few long-term studies regarding the change of bony cleft defects in cleft lip and palate after palatoplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the regenerated bone formed in bony cleft defects and the change in bony cleft width after palatoplasty using computed tomography (CT). Thirty non-syndromic unilateral complete cleft lip and palate patients were retrospectively reviewed. The patients underwent palatoplasty at an average age of 14.32 months. CT was performed at an average age of 9.8 years. The authors evaluated the regenerated bone volume ratio, remnant bony cleft

In complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP), a vomerplasty is assumed to improve midfacial growth because of the reduction in scarring in the growth-sensitive areas of the palate. Our aim, therefore, was to evaluate maxillofacial morphology after a modified Langenbeck technique or a vomerplasty in children with complete unilateral CLP who were operated on by a single surgeon. As part of a one-stage closure of complete unilateral CLP done during the first year of life, the technique for repair of the hard palate repair differed between the two groups. In the modified group (n=37, mean age

INTRODUCTION: Speech development is of utmost importance and requires early closure of a palatal cleft. On the other hand, it is well known that all types and timings of surgical repair of facial clefts are detrimental to maxillary growth. Nevertheless, these days one is more and more confronted with a world-wide tendency in favour of the one-in-all operation to close clefts of the lip, alveolus, and palate. Therefore, a three-centre study was performed for testing - once more - the value of two-stage palatoplasty as a means to reduce the detrimental effects of surgery on palatal growth and at

OBJECTIVES: Otitis media with effusion is almost universal in children with cleft palate due to the poor function of the Eustachian tube. Our study investigates the functioning of ventilation tubes placed at the time of primary cleft surgery (4 months of age) and at the time of secondary surgery (12 months of age). We compared two different surgical protocols: (Leg A) closure of the lip and soft palate at the age of 3-4 months (primary surgery) and closure of the hard palate at the age of 12 months (secondary surgery), and (Leg C) closure of the lip at the age of 3-4 months (primary surgery) a

The purpose of this study is to describe the speech characteristics in an English-speaking Ugandan boy of 4.5 years who has a rare paramedian craniofacial cleft (unilateral lip, alveolar, palatal, nasal and maxillary cleft, and associated hypertelorism). Closure of the lip together with the closure of the hard and soft palate (one-stage palatal closure) was performed at the age of 5 months. Objective as well as subjective speech assessment techniques were used. The speech samples were perceptually judged for articulation, intelligibility and nasality. The Nasometer was used for the objective m
