INTRODUCTION: In this study, we investigated the association between the severity of alveolar clefts in infants and the succeeding maxillofacial growth in patients affected by complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.
METHODS: The subjects were 35 nonsyndromic patients affected by unilateral cleft lip and palate (n = 27) or bilateral cleft lip and palate (n = 8). Plaster models and lateral cephalograms taken at 6 years of age were analyzed and compared with the Japanese norms. In the unilateral cleft lip and palate patients, the relationship between the width of the alveolar cleft before pala

Ten cleft lip and palate patients with complete unilateral (five patients) and bilateral (five patients) clefts were treated by a multidisciplinary team integrated by psychologists, surgeons, orthodontists, prosthodontists, pediatric dentists, and speech pathologists, to obtain ideal soft tissue and hard tissue continuity, facial symmetry, functional and esthetic dentitions, excellent nasal architecture, subtle, and hidden lip scars. No hypernasality and adequate social adaptation were found in the 30 years follow-up (20-30 years follow-up with an average of 25.5 years). The patients were trea

INTRODUCTION: Large recalcitrant defects of the anterior palate due to clefting are difficult to close with local tissues. In some cases distant tissue transfer may be the only option. Free segmental vastus lateralis muscle with its long high-caliber pedicle and low donor-site morbidity may be a good option.
PATIENT/METHOD: An 8-year-old girl with bilateral cleft lip and palate was evaluated for a defect in the anterior hard palate. She had four failed palate closures resulting in a 3.2 × 2.8 cm defect with severely scarred surrounding palatal tissues and severely hypernasal speech. A vastus

INTRODUCTION: Initial cleft severity in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) varies. This is reflected in the sizes of the cleft and the palate. The purpose of this retrospective study was to establish whether there is a relationship between cleft severity at birth and growth of the maxilla.
METHODS: Maxillary dental casts of 29 infants with nonsyndromic complete UCLP were used to measure the sizes of the cleft and the palate. The later growth of the maxilla was determined by using cephalometric radiographs taken at age 9. Statistical analyses were performed with mult

OBJECTIVE: In a previous study, children with cleft palate with hard palate closure at 12 months of age showed more typical phonological development than did children with an unrepaired hard palate at 36 months of age. This finding was based on narrow transcription of word initial target consonants obtained from a simple naming test. To evaluate the relevance of this finding, we investigated how well the children's target words were understood by 84 naive listeners.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: Data obtained from 28 children with unilateral cleft lip and palate, 3 years of

Determining the optimal timing and procedure of palatal surgery for children with cleft lip and palate has long raised a major controversy. An early two-stage palatoplasty protocol has been a recent trend in an attempt to obtain preferable maxillary growth without compromising adequate speech development. In this study, we aim to address whether the resulting maxillofacial growth and speech development obtained by an early 2-stage palatoplasty protocol are better than those obtained by conventional 1-stage push-back palatoplasty. Seventy-two nonsyndromic children with complete unilateral cleft

Palatal scarring is assumed to be a primary cause of facial growth derangement in cleft lip and palate. Evidence supporting this hypothesis is confounded by the clinical involvement of various surgeons, and therefore definitive conclusions are not possible. In this study, we investigated the dental arch relationship in two groups, Exposed (47 children; 11.2 yrs) and Unexposed (61 children; 11.2 yrs), with a unilateral cleft lip and palate operated on by the same surgeon. The technique of hard palate repair differed between the two groups. In the Exposed group, palatal bone of the non-cleft sid

Objectives : Cleft palate is a common congenital maxillofacial defect. We wish to present the fabrication of a modified feeding plate that will adapt to the changing palatal and velopharyngeal morphology during function. Case Report : A neonate with unilateral cleft lip and palate was referred to our clinic for the fabrication of a feeding plate. Intraoral examination revealed a cleft involving the uvula and the soft palate, with an alveolar defect on the left side. An impression was taken and a dental cast was obtained. A 1-mm Bioplast clear soft plate was pressed on the model. After trimming

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the bone-soft tissue relationships around the nasolabial area in uncorrected secondary unilateral cleft nose deformities.
STUDY DESIGN: Measurements taken from photographs and cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) results were derived and paired up to represent the deformity features of bone and soft tissue, respectively.
RESULTS: All soft tissue measurements were significantly smaller than the corresponding bone measurements. Various bone-soft tissue correlation patterns were observed in different measurement pairs.
CONCLUSIONS: The adopte

The aim of this study was to compare craniofacial morphology and soft tissue profiles in patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate at 9 years of age, treated in two European cleft centres with delayed hard palate closure but different treatment protocols. The cephalometric data of 83 consecutively treated patients were compared (Gothenburg, N=44; Nijmegen, N=39). In total, 18 hard tissue and 10 soft tissue landmarks were digitized by one operator. To determine the intra-observer reliability 20 cephalograms were digitized twice with a monthly interval. Paired t-test, Pearson correla
