UNLABELLED: Repair of anterior palate after repairing the cleft lip in complete cleft lip and palate patient is sometimes very difficult. It needs wide, extensive and difficult dissection, and has later chances of wound infection, wound dehiscence, complete wound disruption, recurrent oronasal fistula formation and also maxillary hypoplasia. In this study, we compare the outcome of simultaneous repair of cleft lip and cleft hard palate with vomer flap against cleft lip repair alone in patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP).

The authors evaluated the dental arch relationships of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate treated with two-flap palatoplasty at the Chang Gung Craniofacial Center, Taipei, Taiwan, and compared them with the 6 centers from the Eurocleft study. Intraoral dental photographs of 60 consecutively treated Taiwanese patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate were used. The dental arch relationships were rated with the Goslon yardstick and compared with the Goslon outcome of the 6 center Eurocleft study. The strength of agreement of rating was assessed with quadratic-weighted kap

It takes quite a long time to finish treating patients with cleft lip and palate. Usually, lip closure, palate repair, secondary alveolar bone grafting, and secondary repair of lip/nose have been given to patients at appropriate time according to their growth. However, these series of surgical interventions impose a considerable burden on the patients and their families. As for palate repair, it is considered that the earlier the better for the sake of speech, but it should be delayed to approximately 1(1/2) years of age for maxillary growth. However, we have developed a palate repair techniqu

Since 1988, the Milano surgical protocol has included lip, nose and soft palate repair at 6-9 months of age and closure of the hard palate at 18-36 months together with an Early Secondary Gingivo-Alveolo-Plasty (ESGAP). Prior to 1988 the alveolar cleft was repaired in a third step by bone grafting at 9-11 years of age. The goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term maxillary growth in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients who have undergone ESGAP. Alveolar ossification after ESGAP was also studied in the permanent dentition. Growth assessment was carried out comparing lateral X

PURPOSE: Facial esthetics play an important role in social interactions. However, children with a repaired complete unilateral cleft lip and palate usually show some disfigurement of the nasolabial area. To date, few studies have assessed the nasolabial appearance after different treatment protocols. The aim of the present study was to compare the nasolabial esthetics after 1- and 3-stage treatment protocols.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four components of the nasolabial appearance (nasal form, nasal deviation, mucocutaneous junction, and profile view) were assessed by 4 raters in 108 consecutively

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the palatal morphology of patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate after early 2-stage palatoplasty (ETS) consisting of soft palate closure by a modified Furlow palatoplasty at 12 months of age and hard palate closure at 18 months of age. We compared the result with the palatal morphology obtained by Wardill-Kilner push-back palatoplasty (PB) at 12 months of age with that of children with noncleft palate. In the present study we investigated whether ETS can result in better palatal development than conventional PB.

OBJECTIVES: The findings of many questionnaire and inventory studies suggest that people with cleft lip and/or palate report a decreased quality of life. Common problems include dissatisfaction with the external appearance of the lips and nose, speech problems, depression, and anxiety. This qualitative study aimed to explore the subjective perceptions and values of young adults with clefts, particularly with regard to their social lives.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve persons participated in an in-depth interview. Among those, seven had a repaired isolated cleft palate involving only the hard/s

The purpose of this study was to find out the incidence of palatal fistula and study the factors that influence its development after palatoplasty with repositioning of the levator veli palatini. We retrospectively reviewed 176 consecutive repairs of cleft palates during a 2-year period (2004-2006). The age of the patients at the time of repair ranged from 12 to 30 months (mode 17 months). All the palatoplasties were done either by a senior surgeon or a resident surgeon. The chi square test was used to assess whether the development of postoperative fistulas was influenced by sex, extent of cl

The aim of this article is to describe early maxillary alignment in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate using a new orthopedic appliance incorporating beta-titanium wire. The new orthopedic appliance was made with acrylic resin and a spring-shaped beta-titanium wire, and the appliance was fixed onto the hard palate with microscrews under general anesthesia for approximately 1 month. At the end of treatment, both the major and minor segments rotated and moved into a suitable maxillary arch form by the special property of shape memory alloy, resulting in alignment of the cleft palate g

The Milan surgical protocol from 1988 has included repair of lip, nose, and soft palate at 6-9 months of age, and closure of the hard palate and alveolus with an early secondary gingivoalveoloplasty at 18-36 months. The goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term maxillary growth in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who had had the early secondary gingivoalveoloplasty, compared with the growth in a sample treated before 1988, by the same surgeon, with a surgical protocol that differed only by the method and the timing of alveolar closure. Prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous cleft lip and palate patient with a combined hard and soft palate defect is a great challenge, due to the lack of retention of the obturator prosthesis as a result of its weight and the inability to obtain a border seal. Dental implants improve the retention, stability, and occlusal function of prostheses when used in carefully selected cleft lip and palate cases. This clinical report presents an edentulous unilateral cleft lip and palate patient who has hard and soft palate defects and an atrophied maxilla, treated with an implant-supported speech-ai
