A Comparative Analysis of Sector Classification and the Impacted Canine Grading System by Kumar and Daigavane in Patients With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Utilizing Orthopantomogram (OPG) as a Diagnostic Tool.

Introduction Non-syndromic oral clefts, affecting one in 700 newborns in India, are the most prevalent craniofacial anomalies, with genetic or environmental causes impacting various life aspects. Studies indicate higher dental disturbances, particularly impacted canines, in cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients compared to non-cleft individuals. Impacted canines, trapped by hard tissues, require early diagnosis to prevent orthodontic issues. The widely used Ericson and Kurol method employs orthopantomograms (OPGs) to classify canine impaction in typical children. However, diagnosing canines in C

Clinical outcomes of gingivoperiosteoplasty for unilateral cleft lip and palate performed in early childhood.

Conventional gingivoperiosteoplasty (GPP) performed during infancy adversely affects maxillary development. However, the outcomes of this procedure in early childhood have rarely been reported. Therefore, we examined the postoperative outcomes of GPP conducted in patients aged 1.5 years with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). This study included 87 non-syndromic patients with complete UCLP who had undergone early two-stage palatoplasty during the 1999-2004 period. The protocol comprised soft palate plasty at 1 year of age and hard palate closure at 1.5 years of age. In the GPP group (n =

Evaluation of Palatal Bone Regeneration in Cleft Palate Patients after a 2-Stage Palatoplasty Using a Modified Furlow Procedure.

BACKGROUND: A palatal cleft can be reconstructed using various palatoplasty techniques. Many techniques use local mucoperiosteal flaps to close the hard palate cleft, without closing the underlying bone defect. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of spontaneous bone regeneration in the remaining bone defect following 2-stage palatoplasty. The effect of this bone regeneration on transverse maxillary growth also was studied. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate was performed. Cleft size was measured at the hard-soft palate junction

Alveolar cleft reconstruction utilizing a particulate autogenous tooth graft and a novel split-thickness papilla curtain flap - A retrospective study.

During secondary alveolar cleft grafting, the use of autogenous cancellous bone harvested from the iliac crest is still considered the gold standard. Due to the risk of donor-site morbidity and excessive graft resorption, alternative grafting materials (e.g. intraoral bone, xenografts) have been tested. Autogenous tooth bone graft (ATB) is a novel material derived from extracted teeth. ATB has successfully been used in pre-prosthetic and periodontal surgery for hard-tissue reconstruction. Seven patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate were treated with ATB, using their own deciduous teeth

Rehabilitation of a Patient with Cleft Palate Using a Hollow Lightweight Fixed Prosthesis.

Cleft lip and palate are the most common orofacial anomalies affecting the quality of life of an individual. Bilateral cleft lip and palate are the most difficult to treat due to missing premaxilla, and removable prosthesis is the only treatment in such situations to satisfy esthetics, function, and phonetics. In this case report, we have discussed a novel technique of rehabilitating a bilateral cleft palate patient with a fixed hollow prosthesis that would replace the missing hard and soft tissue, yet is light weighed. This unique prosthetic solution could set a new standard of treatment in a

The role of primary surgery in the management of orofacial clefting.

Primary cleft surgery refers to the planned surgical procedure(s) necessary to reconstruct an orofacial defect according to a specified protocol; in the context of a unilateral cleft lip and palate, this would include lip repair (with vomer flap closure of the hard palate), subsequent repair of the residual soft palate cleft and finally, the alveolar bone graft. This paper will provide an overview of the goals of primary surgical reconstruction, including the utility of pre-surgical orthopaedic techniques, including nasoalveolar moulding. The surgical methods of primary lip repair in both unil
