PURPOSE: The timing and management of patients with cleft palates have been controversial. Early soft palate closure at the time of cleft lip repair followed by hard palate closure at a second stage has been hypothesized to improve speech and audiology outcomes. This study compares cleft palate patients who have undergone single-stage versus 2-stage cleft palate repairs and the outcomes on speech and hearing.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified patients with diagnosis of cleft lip with complete cleft palate who underwent either single or 2-stage repair from 2006 to 2012. Data col

The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of postoperative fistula formation from a hybrid cleft palate repair compared to that from two well-established techniques. We performed a modified technique, Sommerlad-Furlow (SF), which combined the repositioning of the levator veli palatini muscles as described by Sommerlad with the double opposing Z-plasty of Furlow to lengthen the soft palate. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate patients who underwent cleft palate repair utilizing SF, Sommerlad, or Furlow techniques with the incidence of palatal fistula as th

Speech has a very significant impact on the life quality of people with cleft and lip palate. Restore tissue anatomy and functionality is the main aim of primary palatal surgery. Multiple factors are associated with successful handling, including the need for a velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) secondary surgery. The study's aim is to determine speech and velopharyngeal function outcomes in children with cleft palate operated in our institution and to determine VPI secondary surgery outcomes, if appropriate. Clinical records of nonsyndromic patients with cleft palate born between January 2009

BACKGROUND AND AIM: It is well known that palatoplasty can often cause disturbances in maxillary growth. The use of a single-layer vomer flap for the early closure of the hard palate is controversy among surgeons. The aim of this study is to compare the 10-year facial growth of 2 surgical protocols in the treatment of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate performed by a single surgeon.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis includes 43 nonsyndromic patients with complete unilateral cleft lip with or without a vomer flap for the closure of the hard palate during cleft-lip repair. Lateral

OBJECTIVE: Cleft lip and palate is the main craniofacial malformation in France. Many surgical techniques had been described to restore cleft palate. In this study, we evaluate phonation in a homogeneous series of patient with isolated unilateral non-syndromic cleft lip and palate before (and after) alveolar cleft closure, operated according to our surgical protocol.
METHODS: We included retrospectively 71 patients with isolated non-syndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), operated in our department from 2009 to 2013. All patients underwent the same surgical protocol: modified Millar

OBJECTIVES: To assess differences in craniofacial growth at 8 years of age according to the different protocols for primary cleft surgery in the Scandcleft project.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial (RCT) involving 10 centres, including non-syndromic Caucasians with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). In Trial 1, a common surgical method (1a) with soft palate closure at 3-4 months of age and hard palate closure at 12 months of age was tested against similar surgery but with hard palate repair at 36 months (delayed hard palate closure) (1b). In Trial 2,

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate craniofacial cephalometric morphology in patients with unilateral clefts (UCLP) and in those with bilateral clefts (BLCP).
METHODS: The lateral radiographs of 129 patients with UCLP or BCLP referred to San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza between January 2010 and January 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Fourteen cephalometric hard tissue landmarks per radiographs were digitized and fifteen measurements (eight angle measurements, six linear measurements, and one ratio measurement) were calculated. Statistical analyses were carried using Chi-squared test

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the adherence frequency of Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida species in newborn babies with Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) who receive presurgical orthopedic therapy with Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM) appliances. This study comprised of 25 CLP newborns including 8-right unilateral, 8-left unilateral and 7-bilateral CLP. First swab samples were taken from the hard palate when the baby was referred and renewed after 3 days. Following the 7th day of delivery of NAM appliance, the swab samples were retaken from both the hard

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Between 1997 and 2014, 3 protocols have been used in out cleft unit for primary repair of unilateral cleft lip and palate. During the Scandcleft randomized controlled trial closing the soft palate and lip at 4 months and the hard palate at 12 months (Protocol 1) was compared with closing the entire palate at 12 months (Protocol 2). Protocol 3 comprises closure of the lip and hard palate with a vomer flap at 4 months and the soft palate at 10 months. The purpose of this study was to compare subsequent velopharyngeal competence at age of 3 and 5 years.

Most scoring systems used to assess facial aesthetics in cleft patients tend to lack consistency, and the absence of an internationally agreed system makes comparison challenging. The most widely used and validated tool is the five-point Asher-McDade index. We note that there are currently no reports (to our knowledge) of its use for scoring outcomes after bilateral cleft lip repair. To validate it for this use, the aim was to describe the outcomes of 22 consecutive bilateral cleft lip repairs assessed using this scale. A retrospective review was undertaken of 22 consecutive patients with bila

BACKGROUND: Variations in the clinical presentation of the unilateral cleft lip resulted in numerous surgical repair techniques used around the world. No universally accepted method exists to evaluate aesthetic surgical results. The purpose of this study is to use the Hubli lip grading system, developed by Smile Train, to evaluate the aesthetic results of unilateral cleft lip repairs based on the surgical technique used.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of unilateral cleft lip repair operations performed by Smile Train surgeons throughout Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europ

The aim of this study was to report two rare cases of ectopic tooth into the nasal cavity. The first case reports a 32-year-old female patient with the main complaint of having a tooth inside her nose. According to her, this condition causes pain and sporadic nosebleed. The patient had a facial trauma when she was 6 years old. The second case refers to an 8-year-old girl with left incomplete unilateral cleft lip and palate. The main complaint was left-sided nasal obstruction by a white hard mass. The treatment for both cases was surgical removal of the ectopic erupted tooth under general anest
