The goal of this paper was to present the orthodontic treatment of a patient with unilateral lip, alveolar and hard palate cleft (UCLP) and the agenesis of permanent teeth and prosthetic rehabilitation of two cases differing from each other in the extent of tissue deficiency. Both patients underwent a long, multi-specialist surgico-orthodontic treatment including derotation of the maxilla's smaller segment and restoration of space for the missing teeth. In the first case presented, cross-bite on the front teeth and the canine was eliminated during a late phase of orthodontic treatment in order

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to investigate speech outcomes after three different types of palatoplasty for the same cleft type. The objective of this study was to investigate the surgical techniques that are essential for normal speech on the basis of each surgical characteristic.
METHODS: Thirty-eight consecutive nonsyndromic patients with unilateral complete cleft of the lip, alveolus, and palate were enrolled in this study. Speech outcomes, i.e., nasal emission, velopharyngeal insufficiency, and malarticulation after one-stage pushback (PB), one-stage modified Furlow (MF), or conve

A cleft lip and palate consists of fissures of the upper lip and/or palate, and is the most commonly seen orofacial anomaly that involves the middle third of the face. Early treatment of patients with a cleft lip and palate is important because of esthetic, functional, and psychological concerns. Nasoalveolar molding provides excellent results when started immediately after birth. This clinical report describes the presurgical management of an infant with a complete unilateral cleft of the soft palate, hard palate, alveolar ridge, and lip.

The study presents the surgical protocol of unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) treatment based on the one-stage method. It is exemplified by the treatment course of a patient suffering from UCLP. The method was worked out and implemented at the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw. Its main advantage is the early establishment of the anatomical structures of the naso-oral cave and the facial part of the skull, before the development of speech. The complete closure of each part of the cleft - the soft and hard palate and the lip before the end of the first year of life, enables the quick

OBJECTIVE: To address the question of whether one- or two-stage palatal treatment protocol has fewer detrimental effects on craniofacial growth in patients aged 5 years with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with non-syndromic unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLPs) who had received primary cleft lip repair at age 6-12 months and cleft palate repair at age 18-30 months were selected in this study. Eighteen UCCLP patients who received two-stage palate repair were selected as group 1, and 22 UCCLP patients who received one-stage palate rep

BACKGROUND: Midfacial growth retardation in cleft lip and palate (CLP) cases, is seen in all the three dimensions. Conventionally these cases are managed by orthographic surgery which has a high rate of relapse. The application of the distraction osteogenesis (DO) has revolutionized the management protocol. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of rigid external distractor (RED) in management of cleft induced maxillary hypoplasia.
METHODS: Ten cases of unilateral CLP between 11 and 20 years of age having gross midfacial deficiency and those who have undergone presurgical orthodont

BACKGROUND: A palatal fistula is a common complication of cleft palate repair. Although a buccal musculomucosal flap (BMMF) is effective for fistula repair, it does have the following problems: a second operation may be required to release the pedicle on the oral side and unilateral BMMF cannot close mucosal defects of both the nasal and oral sides. A novel fistula closure method using the folded BMMF (f-BMMF) invented by the authors is presented.
CASE: A 8-year-old-boy with bilateral cleft lip and palate with anencephaly. A fistula in the hard palate occurred after palatoplasty by the Furlow

In "Maria Sklodowska Curie" (MSC) Children's Hospital, Bucharest, Romania, cleft palate repair has been performed according to von Langenbeck since 1984. The speech was good in most patients but wide clefts had a high percentage of fistulas, abnormal speech due to short length and limited mobility of the soft palate. In 2009, the protocol was changed to Gothenburg Delayed Hard Palate Closure, (DHPC) technique. The present evaluation was performed to study the implementation of this technique. One hundred and sixty-eight patients with cleft palate were admitted, 89 isolated cleft palate (ICP),

The aim of this study was to compare the speech in subjects with cleft lip and palate, in whom three methods of the hard palate closure were used. One hundred and thirty-seven children (96 boys, 41 girls; mean age = 12 years, SD = 1·2) with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) operated by a single surgeon with a one-stage method were evaluated. The management of the cleft lip and soft palate was comparable in all subjects; for hard palate repair, three different methods were used: bilateral von Langenbeck closure (b-vL group, n = 39), unilateral von Langenbeck closure (u-vL group,

Tessier cleft types 3 and 4 are both rare craniofacial anomalies. Here we present the first case of a girl born with a combined anomaly of Tessier clefts 3 and 4 with severe bilateral cleft lip, a displaced premaxilla, and three-dimensional underdevelopment of the hard and soft tissues of the maxilla and zygoma. This type of rare facial cleft poses a major operative challenge. Over a period of years, presurgical alveolar molding with an active appliance was followed by seven operations. A satisfactory esthetic outcome was obtained. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment with a plastic surge

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a craniofacial malformation affecting more than seven million people worldwide that results in defects of the hard palate, teeth, maxilla, nasal spine and floor, and maxillodental asymmetry. CLP facial soft-tissue depth (FSTD) values have never been published. The purpose of this research is to report CLP FSTD values and compare them to previously published FSTD values for normal children. Thirty-eight FSTDs were measured on cone beam computed tomography images of CLP children (n = 86; 7-17 years). MANOVA and ANOVA tests determined whether cleft type, age, sex, an

BACKGROUND: The authors have recently reported on the use of an internal maxillary distraction device. In this study, we report on the hard and soft tissue movements achieved with this intraoral distraction device, and the stability changes after distraction osteogenesis for maxillary hypoplasia in patients with cleft lip and palate.
METHODS: Ten male patients with severe hypoplasia of the maxilla, with complete uni- or bilateral cleft lip and palate were included. The mean age of the patients at the time of operation was 11.91 years (±3.41). To evaluate the distraction process and stability,

OBJECTIVES. Cleft lip palate is congenital growth disease with unknown etiology, probably linked to both genetically and external causes. The aim of this work consists in presenting the effects of these diseases on cranio facial growth and the surgical protocols described in literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The literature review articles conducted by Medline ranged from 1998 to 2011 have been selected. The key words of the research were "cleft lip palate", "cleft lip palate facial growth", "cleft lip palate surgery". The inclusion criteria were articles that analyzed surgical protocols and t

BACKGROUND: Facial appearance is important for normal psychosocial development in children with cleft lip and palate (CLP). There is conflicting evidence on how deficient maxillary growth may affect nasolabial esthetics.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated nasolabial appearance in two groups, the Langenback (35 children; mean age 11.1 years; range: 7.9-13.6) and Vomerplasty (58 children; mean age 10.8 years; range: 7.8-14), who received unilateral CLP surgery by the same surgeon. The hard palate repair technique differed between the two groups. In the Langenback group, palatal bone on th

BACKGROUND: Van der Woude syndrome (VWS), an autosomal dominant condition associated with clefts of the lip and/or palate and lower lip pits and is caused by mutations in interferon regulatory factor six gene. It is reported to be the most common syndromic cleft world-wide. Non-penetrance for the lip pit phenotype is found in at least 10% of affected individuals and those without the pits are phenocopies for non-syndromic clefting. The aim of this study is to present the phenotypic characteristic of VWS seen at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) cleft clinic.
