OBJECTIVE: To compare speech outcome and self-reported speech and communicative ability (SOK) in young adults treated with one-stage (OS) or two-stage (TS) palatal repair. Furthermore, to compare with normative data on individuals without cleft lip and palate and to study the relationship between patients' and experts' judgments.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional group comparison study with long-term follow-up. Participants: Patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate treated at 2 cleft centers; 17 with OS at 14 months and 25 with TS, soft palate repair at 7 months and hard palate repair at 6.

Repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is often accompanied by the deformity and asymmetry of the nasal region. Three-dimensional analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between nasal soft- and hard-tissue asymmetries, as well as the changes in nasal asymmetry with age, among children with repaired UCLP (age: 6-12 years). Forty-seven patients were included in this study. Their computed tomography records were retrieved for analysis of the 3D asymmetry of 10 landmarks of the nasal soft and hard tissues. We observed that asymmetry was more severe in nasal hard tissues tha

INTRODUCTION: Within the treatment protocols of patients with cleft lip and palate, the nasoalveolar molding (NAM) acquire more followers every day.Their benefits have been well documented, but not equally their complications. The purpose of this study was to describe the complications produced during treatment with Grayson presurgical NAM in nonsyndromic infants with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.
METHODS: Bibliographic review on 8 databases using search algorithms. By applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 21 articles were detected, which were analyzed in full text. Compl

PURPOSE: The timing and management of patients with cleft palates have been controversial. Early soft palate closure at the time of cleft lip repair followed by hard palate closure at a second stage has been hypothesized to improve speech and audiology outcomes. This study compares cleft palate patients who have undergone single-stage versus 2-stage cleft palate repairs and the outcomes on speech and hearing.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified patients with diagnosis of cleft lip with complete cleft palate who underwent either single or 2-stage repair from 2006 to 2012. Data col

The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of postoperative fistula formation from a hybrid cleft palate repair compared to that from two well-established techniques. We performed a modified technique, Sommerlad-Furlow (SF), which combined the repositioning of the levator veli palatini muscles as described by Sommerlad with the double opposing Z-plasty of Furlow to lengthen the soft palate. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate patients who underwent cleft palate repair utilizing SF, Sommerlad, or Furlow techniques with the incidence of palatal fistula as th

Speech has a very significant impact on the life quality of people with cleft and lip palate. Restore tissue anatomy and functionality is the main aim of primary palatal surgery. Multiple factors are associated with successful handling, including the need for a velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) secondary surgery. The study's aim is to determine speech and velopharyngeal function outcomes in children with cleft palate operated in our institution and to determine VPI secondary surgery outcomes, if appropriate. Clinical records of nonsyndromic patients with cleft palate born between January 2009

OBJECTIVES: To assess differences in craniofacial growth at 8 years of age according to the different protocols for primary cleft surgery in the Scandcleft project.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial (RCT) involving 10 centres, including non-syndromic Caucasians with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). In Trial 1, a common surgical method (1a) with soft palate closure at 3-4 months of age and hard palate closure at 12 months of age was tested against similar surgery but with hard palate repair at 36 months (delayed hard palate closure) (1b). In Trial 2,

OBJECTIVE: To compare speech outcome following different sequencing of hard and soft palate closure between arms and centers within trial 3 and compare results to peers without cleft palate.
DESIGN: A prospective randomized clinical trial.
SETTING: Two Norwegian and 2 British centers.
PARTICIPANTS: One hundred thirty-six 5-year-olds with unilateral cleft lip and palate were randomized to either lip and soft palate closure at 3 to 4 months and hard palate closure at 12 months (arm A) or lip and hard palate closure at 3 to 4 months and soft palate closure at 12 months (arm D).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Between 1997 and 2014, 3 protocols have been used in out cleft unit for primary repair of unilateral cleft lip and palate. During the Scandcleft randomized controlled trial closing the soft palate and lip at 4 months and the hard palate at 12 months (Protocol 1) was compared with closing the entire palate at 12 months (Protocol 2). Protocol 3 comprises closure of the lip and hard palate with a vomer flap at 4 months and the soft palate at 10 months. The purpose of this study was to compare subsequent velopharyngeal competence at age of 3 and 5 years.

METHODS: This prospective study was carried out with 30 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate with skeletal and dental class III malocclusions who were referred to a university department of orthodontics. The patients were evaluated with the cervical vertebral maturation method and divided into two groups, each consisting of 15 patients. The patients in group I (me

BACKGROUND: Variations in the clinical presentation of the unilateral cleft lip resulted in numerous surgical repair techniques used around the world. No universally accepted method exists to evaluate aesthetic surgical results. The purpose of this study is to use the Hubli lip grading system, developed by Smile Train, to evaluate the aesthetic results of unilateral cleft lip repairs based on the surgical technique used.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of unilateral cleft lip repair operations performed by Smile Train surgeons throughout Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europ

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the palatal fistula rate, explore the influencing factors of Huaxi Sommerlad-Furlow (SF) palatoplasty.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 385 consecutive cleft-palate cases was performed to determine the incidence of postoperative fistula and assess the possible contributing factors, such as sex, weight, age, cleft type, operator skills, preoperative white blood cell, preventive antibiotic use, and postoperative temperature.
RESULTS: Fistulas occurred in 15/385 patients (3.9%). Among them, 1 fistula was located at the junction of the hard and soft pal

INTRODUCTION: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) surgery interferes with maxillary growth and contributes to transversal and sagittal growth impairment. Our retrospective descriptive study aimed to evaluate maxillary bone shape in a homogenous unilateral CLP patient group using geometric morphometrics based on CT-scan data.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included all patients with available CT-scans at the end of pubertal growth and operated on at Smile House of Milan, according to the standard protocol, involving two surgical steps: (1) primary closure of the lip and soft palate at 6 months of age and (2)

BACKGROUND: Speech-sound development in preschoolers with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) as a group is delayed/disordered, and obstruents comprise the most vulnerable sound class.
AIMS: To evaluate the development of obstruent correctness (PCC-obs) and error types (cleft speech characteristics (CSCs) and developmental speech characteristics (DSCs)) from ages 3-5 and to investigate possible predictors (error types, velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) and gender) of PCC-obs at age 5 in two groups of children with UCLP.
