Reconstruction of the Nose After Unilateral Cheilouranoplasty.

Congenital clefts of the maxillofacial area still remain of current interest in reconstructive facial surgery. While their frequency grows up, the issues of effective surgical primary and secondary interventions are not completely solved yet. The article presents the main problems associated with the elimination of the deformations and our modifications of methods for their correction. The study was conducted based on the Centre [2] and the University [1], Russian Federation. The project was carried out within the framework of the state assignment of the Ministry of Science and Higher Educatio

Spatiotemporal MicroRNA-Gene Expression Network Related to Orofacial Clefts.

Craniofacial structures change dynamically in morphology during development through the coordinated regulation of various cellular molecules. However, it remains unclear how these complex mechanisms are regulated in a spatiotemporal manner. Here we applied natural cubic splines to model gene and microRNA (miRNA) expression from embryonic day (E) 10.5 to E14.5 in the proximal and distal regions of the maxillary processes to identify spatiotemporal patterns of gene and miRNA expression, followed by constructing corresponding regulatory networks. Three major groups of differentially expressed gen

Differential neural substrates for responding to monetary, sexual humor, and erotic rewards.

Sexual humor involves neural mechanisms related to both humor and sexual arousal. However, evidence on the role of the amygdala in processing sexual humor is lacking. Unlike erotic stimuli that directly involve a biological drive, sexual humor gains its value through learned associations. Processes related to responding to erotic versus monetary rewards have been identified in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) along a postero-anterior axis, but it is less clear whether these processes are also active during the appreciation of sexual humor. Results showed the processing of sexual humor a

Identification of novel susceptibility genes for non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate using NGS-based multigene panel testing.

For non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (ns-CL/P), the proportion of heritability explained by the known risk loci is estimated to be about 30% and is captured mainly by common variants identified in genome-wide association studies. To contribute to the explanation of the "missing heritability" problem for orofacial clefts, a candidate gene approach was taken to investigate the potential role of rare and private variants in the ns-CL/P risk. Using the next-generation sequencing technology, the coding sequence of a set of 423 candidate genes was analysed in 135 patients from th

Elevated concentrations of chromium in maternal serum, umbilical cord serum, and cord tissue are associated with an increased risk for orofacial clefts.

Chromium (Cr) exposure during gestation causes malformations in animal experiments. In this multicenter case-control study, we initially involved 130 orofacial clefts (OFCs) and 260 controls to assess the association between Cr concentration and risk for OFCs. Then, umbilical cord serum (49 vs. 119) and cord tissue (84 vs. 142) were used to validate the association between Cr and OFCs. We found that maternal serum Cr concentrations in OFC cases were significantly higher than those in controls. Compared with the lowest tertile of maternal serum Cr concentration, the highest tertile of Cr increa

PARD3 gene variation as candidate cause of nonsyndromic cleft palate only.

Nonsyndromic cleft palate only (NSCP) is a common congenital malformation worldwide. In this study, we report a three-generation pedigree with NSCP following the autosomal-dominant pattern. Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing revealed that only the frameshift variant c.1012dupG [p. E338Gfs*26] in PARD3 cosegregated with the disease. In zebrafish embryos, ethmoid plate patterning defects were observed with PARD3 ortholog disruption or expression of patient-derived N-terminal truncating PARD3 (c.1012dupG), which implicated PARD3 in ethmoid plate morphogenesis. PARD3 plays vital roles in

Furlow Palatoplasty and Tonsillectomy for Treating Patients With Submucous Cleft Palate and Tonsillar Hypertrophy: A One-Stage Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate are more liable to have obstructive sleep apnea than children with normal palate due to narrow airways. Tonsillar hypertrophy is a common cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; hence, it is not surprising to be encountered during cleft palate repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of tonsillectomy and Furlow palatoplasty performed as a 1-stage operation in patients presenting with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and tonsillar hypertrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven pediatric patients with SMCP and hypertrophied tonsils were i
