Growth factor analysis in children with non-syndromic orofacial clefts: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are one of the most prevalent congenital abnormalities that affect the lip and/or palate and can cause significant growth retardation in newborns. Several studies have revealed that children with congenital defects or genetic syndromes have their own growth pattern, which may differ from that of normal children. However, during infancy and until around age two, these babies usually show a period of catch-up growth in length, weight, and head circumference for both boys and girls. It was noted out that both genders had smaller physical dimensions than normal

Implementing the Palatal Plate for Robin Sequence Beyond the Originating Center: How I Do It.

The treatment of upper airway obstruction in newborns with Robin sequence (RS) is challenging. We report our experience implementing the minimally invasive Tübingen palatal plate in a pediatric tertiary care center, detailing a step-by-step protocol and clinical outcomes from our first patient series. Despite a learning curve and need for multidisciplinary coordination, the palatal plate can be safely and effectively integrated outside its center of origin.

Structural birth defects and exposure to oil and gas wells during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to unconventional hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of structural birth defects. These associations have not been examined in California, where most operators use conventional methods that do not use enhanced techniques. OBJECTIVES: Determine whether residing near oil and gas wells during early pregnancy was associated with birth defect risks among San Joaquin Valley, California, residents. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study with data from the California Center of the National Birth Defects Prevention Stud

Expert consensus on the diagnosis and management of tooth developmental anomalies.

Tooth developmental anomalies are a group of disorders caused by unfavorable factors affecting the tooth development process, resulting in abnormalities in tooth number, structure, and morphology. These anomalies typically manifest during childhood, impairing dental function, maxillofacial development, and facial aesthetics, while also potentially impacting overall physical and mental health. The complex etiology and diverse clinical phenotypes of these anomalies pose significant challenges for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. As they usually emerge early in life, long-term manageme

Insights from r/CleftLip: Patient Experiences and Advice.

INTRODUCTION: Online community forums, like Reddit, are increasing in use by cleft patients and families as both an avenue for support and a source of medical information. This study seeks to leverage Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to characterize the nature and sentiment of the online discussion regarding clefts, providing treatment teams with improved anticipation and focus on the leading patient and family concerns. METHODS: Top, "all time," original posts with an "advice" flair from the r/cleftlip subreddit were analyzed. Sentiment analysis was performed using NLP to determine th

Evolution of Simulation-Based Training: The Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop as a Model for Sustainable Cleft Education.

To keep pace with the advancements of technology, training models must also adapt, prioritizing safety, efficiency, and accessibility. Simulation-based training has emerged as a powerful tool to address these demands, offering structured, safe environments where junior cleft providers can build procedural confidence and sharpen their technical skills. The Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop was established to provide sustainable, targeted solutions to challenges faced by cleft providers in their local contexts, by focusing on capacity building. As evidenced by measurable improvements in procedur

Finite Element Analysis in Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity: A Narrative Review from Biomechanical Insights to Clinical Translation.

Cleft lip nasal deformity poses significant surgical challenges due to its multidimensional anatomical distortions and dynamic biomechanical interactions. Conventional approaches relying on two-dimensional imaging and empirical judgment fail to address the three-dimensional tissue mechanics governing nasal symmetry and airway function. This review demonstrates how finite element analysis (FEA) transforms cleft nasal reconstruction by integrating biomechanical precision with clinical translation. Patient-specific modeling based on CT/MRI data enables FEA to quantify stress-strain distributions

Characterizing Secondary Velopharyngeal Surgery in Children With Cleft Palate at an Academic Center.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with secondary surgery for velopharyngeal insufficiency in children following primary palatoplasty. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of children with cleft palate who were seen at a single academic center between August 2014 and April 2024 and underwent primary palatoplasty. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and the need for and number of secondary velopharyngeal surgeries were recorded. Univariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify associated factors. RESULTS: Of 251 children who underwent pr

Parental knowledge and access barriers in the management of cleft lip and/or palate: A cross-sectional study from Saudi Arabia.

Cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CLP) are congenital anomalies caused by improper fusion of facial structures, influenced by genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors. Understanding parental knowledge and attitudes is essential, as misconceptions and limited awareness can affect the care and development of affected children. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate Saudi parents' understanding, perspectives, and behaviors concerning CLP in their children. Additionally, it sought to identify prevalent misconceptions and obstacles encountered by these parents in accessing necessary care.

Prenatal diagnosis of Blepharo-Cheilo-Dontic syndrome: a case report.

This case report describes the prenatal diagnosis of the extremely rare Blepharo-Cheilo-Dontic syndrome. After sonographic diagnosis of the bilateral cleft lip and palate and the persistent open eyelids, amniocentesis with subsequent molecular genetics confirmed the sonographically presumed de-novo mutation of the CDH1 gene and the Blepharo-Cheilo-Dontic Syndrome. After multidisciplinary counseling the patients termined the pregnancy.

Treatment and Long-Term Outcomes of Children with Co-Occurring Childhood Apraxia of Speech and Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

A retrospective review of multidisciplinary velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) Clinic records from 2010 to 2024 was completed. Inclusion criteria for the review were diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and documented evaluation for velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). Adequacy of velopharyngeal closure and perceptual judgment of resonance were identified as primary outcome measures. Surgical interventions and speech outcomes were also described. This review identified 74 children who were diagnosed with CAS and evaluated for VPD in the VPI Clinic. For the subset (n = 50) of children wh

Standardized Method for Description of Cleft Lip and Palate Phenotypes and Its Implementation in Daily Practice: Validation Study.

BackgroundCleft lip and palate are the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies. There are several classifications of cleft lip and palate that have been proposed over the years; however, only a few have found clinical application. We presented classification of a cleft lip and palate that is comprehensive and uniform, and it can precisely define the vast majority of the clefts.MethodsFive hundred and twenty-one consecutive patients underwent their primary surgical procedure for cleft lip and palate deformities.
