The process leading to affirmation of life with cleft lip and cleft palate: the importance of acquiring coherence.

AIMS: The objectives of this study were to understand the experiences of people with cleft lip and cleft palate (CLCP) and to describe the processes and factors leading to the acquisition of high self-esteem. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted of 19 subjects with CLCP recruited via hospitals and through snowball sampling, and the results were analyzed qualitatively, comparing high and low self-esteem groups. RESULTS: Participants with high self-esteem had gone through the phases of "noticing their difference from others", "knowing about and deepening their understanding of CL

Patterns of prenatal alcohol exposure and associated non-characteristic minor structural malformations: a prospective study.

The characteristic facial features of the more severe end of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) include smooth philtrum, thin vermillion of the upper lip, and short palpebral fissures. A systematic evaluation of a comprehensive list of minor structural defects in association with varying patterns of prenatal exposure to alcohol has not been performed. We examined the patterns and timing of prenatal alcohol exposure to minor structural malformations occurring in at least 5% of the sample. Patterns of drinking were evaluated by drinks per day, number of binge episodes, and maximum number of

Medications used to treat nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and the risk of selected birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) occurs in up to 80% of pregnant women, but its association with birth outcomes is not clear. Several medications are used for the treatment of NVP; however, data are limited on their possible associations with birth defects. METHODS: Using data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS)-a multi-site, population-based, case-control study-we examined whether NVP or its treatment was associated with the most common noncardiac defects in the NBDPS (nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate [CL/P], cleft palate alone [CP],

A practical offer for hypospadias dressing: Allevyn®.

INTRODUCTION: An ideal hypospadias dressing material must be cheap and non-allergenic. It also must be easily and quickly applied, non-adherent to the incision, effectively absorb the leakages of the wound, pressurise the flaps and grafts effectively, without damaging the blood circulation, protect against infections, and must be easily and painlessly removable. We use a product that is produced for healing chronic wounds and burns, Allevyn Adhesive® , as a wound dressing after hypospadias surgery and circumcision. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 61 hypospadias and 85 circumcision cases op

8.6Mb interstitial deletion of chromosome 4q13.3q21.23 in a boy with cognitive impairment, short stature, hearing loss, skeletal abnormalities and facial dysmorphism.

We describe a 16-year-old boy with an 8.6Mb interstitial deletion of chromosome 4q 13.3q21.23 identified by oligo array-CGH. The patient presents psychomotor developmental delay, absent speech, marked progressive growth restriction, hearing loss, skeletal defects and minor facial anomalies. The patient required surgical treatment for cleft lip and palate, bilateral cryptorchidism and a neurofibroma. The analysis of the presented patient against previously published cases allowed us to expand further on the phenotype and to reevaluate previously proposed critical overlapping region at 4q21. As

Effect of low and chronic radiation exposure: a case-control study of mental retardation and cleft lip/palate in the monazite-bearing coastal areas of southern Kerala.

A population-based 1:3 age-matched case-control study was conducted during 2006-2009 to assess the role of high-level natural radiation (>1 mSv/year) on congenital mental retardation and cleft lip/palate in the southwest coastal area of Kerala. Dosimetry was carried out in the house where parents resided during conception and the subsequent two trimesters of pregnancy of the study subject. Conditional logistic regression did not suggest any statistically significant association of either mental retardation (n = 445) or cleft lip/palate (n = 116) with high-level natural radiation. The odds of m

[Multiple facial squamous cell carcinomas in a child, revealing a xeroderma pigmentosum].

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is very rare in children. One of its most common risk factors is xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), an autosomal recessive disease characterized by defective cellular DNA repair, and hypersensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. CASE REPORT: We report a case of XP in a 7-year-old black African boy, revealed by squamous cell carcinomas of the inferior lip and upper left eyelid. DISCUSSION: In sub-Saharan regions, the early diagnosis of XP is difficult because of its uncommon occurrence on black skin and black skin specificities. The strong sun radiation i

Relationship between inferior alveolar nerve imaging and neurosensory impairment following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy in skeletal Class III cases with mandibular prognathism.

Postoperative inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) neurosensory impairment was prospectively evaluated in 20 consecutive patients with mandibular prognathism who underwent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Routine presurgical imaging was obtained for all patients in study and control groups (10 patients each). Cone beam CT of the mandibular ramus and body was performed in 10 randomly selected patients (study group) and the precise location of the IAN was determined preoperatively and intraoperatively. Nerve sensation was evaluated by subjectively monitoring the physical feeling of the lower lip and

Change in upper lip height and nostril sill after alveolar bone grafting in unilateral cleft lip alveolus patients.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar bone grafting is known to reduce nasal asymmetry by supporting a defective alar base and a sunken nostril. However, there are no studies which include details of changes to the upper lip with appropriate measurements. The purpose of this study was to measure the change in the upper lip height and nostril sill after alveolar bone grafting, using photogrammetry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 18 unilateral cleft lip alveolus (UCLA) patients who were diagnosed with unilateral cleft lip and palate (mean age, 9.87 years). The patients underwent alveolar bone graft

Three-dimensional analyses of facial soft tissue configuration of Japanese females with jaw deformity--a trial of polygonal view of facial soft tissue deformity in orthognathic patients.

In this study, we evaluated the three-dimensional (3D) soft tissue configuration of Japanese females with/without jaw deformity in order to establish the polygonal view of facial soft tissue deformity three-dimensionally. A polygonal chart was applied to assess the outcomes of orthognathic surgery for patients with mandibular hyperplasia with/without deviation. The study included 20 Japanese females with mandibular hyperplasia with/without deviation. All patients received mandibular setback surgery, and 3D measurements were carried out pre-operation, and at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively us

[Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz syndrome) in the neonate: report of a case presenting with cleft lip and palate].

Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz syndrome) is a rare congenital dysplasia of the mesoectodermal derived tissues. It is an X-linked inheritance syndrome caused by mutations in the PORCNgene mapped on Xp11.23. The condition is characterized by cutaneous lesions distributed in linear areas associated with diverse congenital deformities. Given the rarely described neonatal features, we report a case of Goltz syndrome in a black female newborn. This is the first case known in Burkina Faso. The cutaneous, hair, and nail lesions usually observed were present, characterized by their preponderance on the

Functional characterization of a novel TP63 mutation in a family with overlapping features of Rapp-Hodgkin/AEC/ADULT syndromes.

Heterozygous mutations in TP63 cause a wide spectrum of autosomal dominant developmental disorders variably affecting skin, limbs, and face. TP63 encodes p63, a protein expressed in two main isoforms (Tap63 and ΔNp63) with critical roles in both cell differentiation and development. Some analyses suggest a relationship of the mutation site to the observed clinical picture, although this link is inconsistent. This suggests an appreciable phenotypic continuity within the TP63-related disorders. We report a 3-month-old boy ascertained for congenital scalp erosion and mild features of ectodermal d

Congenital hypothyroidism in association with chromosome 3p25.3-pter deletion.

This report describes a case of a neonate presenting with many of the typical phenotypic characteristics of chromosome 3p deletion including hypertelorism, flat nasal bridge, flat philtrum, thin lips and low-set ears. The hands and feet showed post axial polydactyly, single palmar creases and rocker bottom feet. A karyotype confirmed chromosome 3p25.3-pter deletion with normal parental karyotypes. A high TSH was noted on newborn screening and congenital hypothyroidism was confirmed on thyroid function tests. Thyroid nuclear imaging was suggestive of dyshormonogenesis. This is the first reporte
