Ankyloglossia as a Barrier to Breastfeeding: A Literature Review.

This is a literature review of ankyloglossia and its correlation with lactation problems. Ankyloglossia, commonly referred to as tongue-tie, brings about functional difficulties and, in some cases, may lead to early weaning. It is crucial to use breastfeeding as the exclusive food source for the first six months of an infant's life, and the interference of the tongue contributes substantially to success in this regard. Even though there are many publications about ankyloglossia, there are still many controversies about its definition, diagnosis, classification, and treatment decision determine

The development of a specialist tongue tie assessment clinic for neonates.

OBJECTIVES: Ankyloglossia or tongue tie is a condition where the lingual frenulum restricts tongue movement, negatively impacting breastfeeding. An increasing number of infants diagnosed with ankyloglossia may lead to unnecessary procedures. To limit the overtreatment of this problem, we established a specialist clinic to provide the best available evidence-based care to the mother-infant dyad. METHODS: We discuss the development of a specialist tongue tie assessment clinic in our unit. RESULTS: From January to October 2023, there were 162 visits to the clinic by 157 patients. During this ti

Tessier 30 Facial Cleft: A Rare Craniofacial Anomaly.

AIM: Surgical correction of median mandibular cleft with ankylossia. BACKGROUND: Orofacial developmental abnormalities that involve the upper lip and face are the most common variety. The midline cleft of the mandible is one of the rarest categorized as Tessier #30, which extends along the midline of the mandible, along with ankyloglossia or aglossia. The morphogenesis of craniofacial clefts could be due to the lack of fusion or normal development of the facial processes in the first branchial arch or failure of the mesodermal penetration into the midline. CASE DESCRIPTION: This article pres

Dysfunctional suction dynamics in newborns with ankyloglossia.

PURPOSE: Compare infant suction in babies with and without ankyloglossia using a microprocessor-controlled pressure sensor coupled to a pacifier. METHODS: Fifty-five infants from 0 to 2 months of age underwent clinical examination for ankyloglossia, after which they were offered a silicone pacifier connected to the pressure acquisitiondevice and suction activity was recorded. Thus, we extracted the frequency of sucks within a burst, the average suck duration, the burst duration, the number of sucks per burst, the maximum amplitude of sucks per burst and the inter-burst interval. RESULTS: The

Ankyloglossia: Typical Characteristics, Effects on Function, and Clinical Implications.

The purpose of this article is to (1) define the diagnostic characteristics of ankyloglossia, (2) identify potential problems associated with ankyloglossia, and (3) discuss treatment options, when treatment is appropriate. This article is based on a review of the literature, including recent systematic reviews, and the author's experience as a cleft and orofacial specialist. Ankyloglossia is a common congenital condition characterized by an anterior attachment of the lingual frenulum on the tongue. This causes difficulty elevating and/or protruding the tongue tip. As such, ankyloglossia has be

Cerebrospinal fluid Rhinorrhoea is caused by an abnormal open communication between the subarachnoid space and the nasal cavity. The most common anatomic sites of such abnormal communication are found in the anterior skull base, namely, ethmoid roof, olfactory groove, roof of the sphenoid sinus and the posterior wall of the frontal sinus. It can be classified into traumatic or spontaneous. Spontaneous leaks are associated with highest recurrence rates following surgical repair. The repair of CSF Rhinorrhoea has rapidly evolved over the past 30 years. Prior to the advent of the endoscopic appro

Soft tissue lasers: An innovative tool enhancing treatment outcomes in orthodontics - A narrative review.

Dystonia is a highly prevalent movement disorder that can manifest at any time across the lifespan. An increasing number of investigations have tied this disorder to dysfunction of a broad "dystonia network" encompassing the cerebellum, thalamus, basal ganglia, and cortex. However, pinpointing how dysfunction of the various anatomic components of the network produces the wide variety of dystonia presentations across etiologies remains a difficult problem. In this review, a discussion of functional network findings in non-mendelian etiologies of dystonia is undertaken. Initially acquired etiolo

Comparison Between Clinical Outcome of Intralesional Human Placental Extract Alone and Topical Application of Placental Extract Gel After Fibrotomy in Oral Submucous Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant condition prevalent in our country. Juxtaepithelial inflammation with progressive hyalinization of the lamina propria results in stiffness and fibrosis of the oral mucosa, characterised by trismus, ankyloglossia, and a burning sensation. Various methods of treatment have been tried in these cases, which include placental extract injections and the cutting of fibrous bands. In this study, we aim to compare the outcome of intra-lesional placental extract injection with fibrotomy and placental extract gel application in OSMF. METHODOLO

Concurrent Occurrence of Ear Tag With Posterior Talon Cusp, Fissured Tongue, and Ankyloglossia: A Case Report.

Ear tags or accessory auricles are branchial cleft remnants that clinically appear as asymptomatic nodules or papules in the preauricular region. They occur in various syndromes affecting the first and branchial arches during embryogenesis. The presence of an ear tag can have a psychological impact on one's life due to its unesthetic appearance, thereby affecting their quality of life. Talon cusp usually occurs in the maxillary central or lateral incisor. A fissured tongue or cerebriform tongue is characterized by the presence of horizontal or vertical grooves, usually affecting the dorsum of
