Incomplete midline cleft of lower lip.

Midline cleft of the lower lip is defined as a midline vertical cleft of the soft tissue of the lower lip. It may present with a midline cleft of the mandible. It may also be accompanied by other congenital anomalies such as a cleft tongue, ankyloglossia, a heart lesion, and absence of the hyoid bone. The etiologic cause is thought to be a failure of mesodermal penetration into the midline structures of the first branchial arch. This case report is on a female child who presented with an incomplete midline cleft of the soft tissue of the lower lip. It was surgically corrected with a vertical w

The platysma myocutaneous flap. Indications and caveats.

The platysma myocutaneous flap has enjoyed limited popularity despite its versatility, dependability, and ease of harvesting. In this article, we describe 12 consecutive patients who underwent platysma flap reconstruction of various oral cavity and oropharyngeal defects. Complications included loss of one skin paddle, one pharyngocutaneous fistula, and one intraoral wound dehiscence. In all patients, bare bone was covered or appropriate spacing between the tongue and other structures was maintained to avoid ankyloglossia. We discuss specific indications and caveats.

[Oromandibular-limb hypogenesia spectrum: report of a case of lower ankylogloxia ++ associated with bilateral apodia].

We report on a newborn with ankyloglossia inferior, micrognathia, and bilateral apodia. The tongue was small and adherent to the floor of the mouth. It has been proposed that oromandibular-limb hypogenesis sequences are due to an interruption of embrionic blood supply. Interruption or reduction of uterine artery blood flow appear to be pharmacologically or physically induced. In our case, there was no prenatal history of chorionic villus sampling, of drug or teratogens exposure, and of intrauterine infections.

Enhanced teratogenic activity of di-n-butyltin diacetate by carbon tetrachloride pretreatment in rats.

Di-n-butyltin diacetate (DBTA) has been shown previously to cause malformations such as cleft mandible, ankyloglossia and fused ribs in rat foetuses after oral treatment of dams on day 8 of gestation. In this study, effects of pretreatment with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) on the teratogenic activity of DBTA were examined in Wistar rats. Pregnant rats were pretreated sc with CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg) on days 6 and 7 of gestation and were treated orally with DBTA on day 8 of gestation at doses of 0, 4.5, 10 or 22 mg/kg. Caesarean sections were performed on day 20 of gestation, and foetuses were examined

Oral findings in a group of newborn Swedish children.

Oral examinations were performed of 1021 newborn Swedish children, of whom 101 were re-examined after 2-3 or 4-5 months. The most common findings, registered in 74.9% of the children, were of oral mucosal cysts situated either palatally or on the alveolar ridges. The majority of the palatal cysts disappeared shortly after birth, and some alveolar cysts appeared after birth. Ankyloglossia was found in 2.5% of the children, and Fordyce spots in 1.0%. No natal teeth were found. The upper labial frenum was attached to the crest of the alveolar ridge in 76.7% of the children, palatally in 16.7% and

Linkage analysis of X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia in Manitoba Mennonite and British Columbia Native kindreds.

A locus (CPX) responsible for X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia was previously mapped to the proximal long arm of the X chromosome through DNA marker linkage studies in two large kindred: an Icelandic family and a British Columbia (B.C.) Native family. In this study, additional linkage analyses have been performed in the B.C. family and in a newly identified Manitoba Mennonite family with X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia. The Manitoba CPX locus maps to the same region as Icelandic and B.C. CPX. Two-point disease-to-marker linkage analyses in the Manitoba family indicate a maximum

The transverse-vertical frenuloplasty for ankyloglossia.

Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly in which the frenulum is attached to the tip of the tongue to varying degrees. Children affected by this condition may be unhindered or they may have a variety of problems to include dysfunctional breast-feeding and speech mechanics. This article describes the indications for and surgical technique of the transverse-vertical frenuloplasty for the treatment of ankyloglossia.

Orodigitofacial syndromes type I and II: clinical and surgical studies.

Eleven patients were followed at the multidisciplinary facial cleft department from 1963 to 1993. Nine had orodigitofacial (ODF) I syndrome (Papillon-Leage, 1954) and two had ODF II syndrome (Mohr, 1941). The authors observed seven median clefts of the upper lip, eight atypical cleft palates, nine lingual tumors, ten polylobed tongues, four ankyloglossia. All vestibular frenula were hypertrophied. Facial analysis showed five facial hypertelorisms, eight epicanthal folds, ten anomalies of the forehead. Nasal anomalies were constant with ten alar hypoplasia and four nasal curves. Syndactyly was

Hereditary epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a diverse group of disorders having blister formation as their common feature. Tissue separation occurs at variable depths in the skin and/or mucosa depending on the specific EB type. Marked oral involvement of the soft and hard tissues can produce potentially devastating alterations, with oral tissue fragility and blistering common to all EB types. Oral debilitation resulting from soft tissue scarring is limited primarily to the recessive dystrophic EB subtypes. Individuals with generalized recessive dystrophic EB typically have microstomia, obliteration of the o

Congenital ankyloglossia with deviation of the epiglottis and larynx: symptoms and respiratory function in adults.

We operated on 38 adult patients with congenital ankyloglossia with deviation of the epiglottis and larynx. The results were as follows. 1) Most patients had Angle's class III malocclusion, irregular alignment of the upper teeth, and high hard palate. 2) Fifty percent of the patients in our study population had obstructive respiratory failure. Their vital capacity increased significantly after the operation, but changes of forced expiratory volume in 1 second were not prominent. 3) Subjective symptoms of this disease were stiffness of the shoulders, a cold feeling in the extremities, an obstru

The localization of a gene causing X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia (CPX) in an Icelandic kindred is between DXS326 and DXYS1X.

The locus responsible for X-linked, nonsyndromic cleft palate and/or ankyloglossia (CPX) has previously been mapped to the proximal long arm of the human X chromosome between Xq21.31 and q21.33 in an Icelandic kindred. We have extended these studies by analyzing an additional 14 informative markers in the family as well as including several newly investigated family members. Recombination analysis indicates that the CPX locus is more proximal than previously thought, within the interval Xq21.1-q21.31. Two recombinants place DXYS1X as the distal flanking marker, while one recombinant defines DX

Teratogenic effects of various di-n-butyltins with different anions and butyl(3-hydroxybutyl)tin dilaurate in rats.

In our previous study, di-n-butyltin diacetate has been shown to cause malformations such as cleft mandible, ankyloglossia, fused ribs, etc. in rat fetuses after oral treatment of maternal rats on day 8 of gestation. In this study, teratogenic effects of five di-n-butyltin compounds with different anions and also butyl(3-hydroxybutyl)tin dilaurate (3-OHDBTL) were examined in Wistar rats. Anion groups of these compounds were as follows: diacetate (DBTA), dichloride (DBTC), maleate (DBTM), oxide (DBTO) and dilaurate (DBTL). On day 8 of gestation, pregnant rats were treated orally with these comp

Oral involvement of recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa inversa.

The inversa subtype of autosomal recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (EBDR-I) is a rare variant characterized by lesions involving primarily the flexural areas of the body. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the oral manifestations of this unusual dermatologic condition. Ten individuals having EBDR-I were evaluated and compared with an age and sex-matched population of unaffected individuals that served as controls. The diagnosis of EBDR-I was confirmed by skin biopsy that demonstrated tissue separation below the lamina densa and the clinical presentation of blister f

Enhanced prevalence of ankyloglossia with maternal cocaine use.

A series of 500 term neonates was examined in a well-baby nursery, 68 of whom tested positive for maternal cocaine use. From logistic multiple regression equations, weight and crown-heel length were significantly smaller in the maternal cocaine-use subset of this case-control study. Partial ankyloglossia, with a prevalence of 4.4 percent in the overall series, was significantly more common in males than in females (6.0% versus 2.3%), while race (black or white) had no influence on trait frequency. Controlling for race and sex, ankyloglossia was 3.5 times more likely to occur in the drug-use se

Amplification of human polymorphic sites in the X-chromosomal region q21.33 to q24: DXS17, DXS87, DXS287, and alpha-galactosidase A.

Methods for the PCR amplification of five polymorphic sites in the region Xq21.33 to Xq24 were developed and used to predict heterozygosity for Fabry disease in informative families. Clones containing polymorphic sites associated with DNA segments DXS17, DXS87, and DXS287, and the alpha-galactosidase A gene were isolated from genomic libraries. Surrounding nucleotide sequences and optimal conditions for amplification of each polymorphic site were determined. These amplifiable polymorphisms provided predictions of heterozygosity for Fabry disease and should be useful for diagnostic linkage anal

The gene responsible for X-linked cleft palate (CPX) in a British Columbia native kindred is localized between PGK1 and DXYS1.

Human craniofacial malformations are a class of common congenital anomalies in which the etiology is heterogeneous and often poorly understood. To better delineate the molecular basis of craniofacial development, we have undertaken a series of experiments directed toward the isolation of a gene involved in human secondary palate formation. DNA marker linkage studies have been performed in a large British Columbia (B.C.) Native family in which cleft palate segregates as an X-linked trait. We have examined 62 family members, including 15 affected males and 8 obligate carrier females. A previous

Opitz (BBB/G) syndrome: oral manifestations.

We studied a new case of the G (Opitz BBB/G) syndrome in a 12-year-old boy. Several relatives had partial manifestations of the disorder. A comprehensive dental evaluation of the propositus was conducted; included is, to our knowledge, the first published cephalometric analysis of a G syndrome patient. We reviewed 139 cases of the G syndrome; 48 of them had at least one oral abnormality. These included clefting, micrognathia, ankyloglossia, and high-arched palate. Male G syndrome patients are more likely to have oral anomalies than affected females.

Electrogustometry in oral submucous fibrosis. A study in 50 cases.

Taste sensation were evaluated in 50 cases of Oral Submucous Fibrosis. Ankyloglossia was present in 28% and ulceration of tongue in 6% of cases. None of the cases had subjective impairment of taste sensation. Electrogustometry revealed impairment of taste in 46% of cases. Ankyloglossia was found to be related with the severity of Oral Submucous Fibrosis but impairment of taste was not related with the severity of the disease. The possible mechanism of the impairment of taste is discussed in brief.
