Clinical and Functional Outcomes of Bone Defect Reconstruction Using the Masquelet Technique: Experience with Rare Talus and Metatarsal Cases.

BACKGROUND: Segmental bone defects remain a major challenge in orthopedic surgery. The Masquelet's induced membrane technique (MIMT) is a two-stage reconstructive approach used for limb salvage in complex defects. This study evaluated radiographic healing and patient-reported outcomes after MIMT in a single tertiary center, including rare talus and metatarsal applications. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 patients (10 males, 4 females) treated with MIMT for post-traumatic or osteomyelitis-related lower-extremity bone defects (tibia, femur, talus, metatarsal) between 2010 and 2023. Mean

Ultrasonographic Features of Amyloid Arthropathy in Light Chain Amyloidosis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid arthropathy is characterized by the deposition of misfolded proteins in the joints and soft tissues. It is often a manifestation of light chain amyloidosis. The ultrasonographic features of amyloid arthropathy are solely reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present the case of a 70-year-old patient who was diagnosed with light chain amyloidosis. He reported chronic joint pain, bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, and an inguinal mass. Ultrasound examination revealed tenosynovitis of the flexor digitorum tendons, the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon, and the

Final Tongue Size in the Treatment of Macroglossia Associated With Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome: Review of 29 Cases.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a rare congenital disorder whose main clinical feature is macroglossia. This frequent manifestation may impair respiratory, feeding, speech, and orofacial developmental functions. When significant functional and/or aesthetic repercussions are evident, surgical excision is the primary management approach, with several techniques described. In this study, we analyzed medical records from 29 patients diagnosed with BWS and macroglossia, and evaluated 26 cases of partial glossectomy performed between 2015 and 2025. Indications, surgical technique, postoperative

Progressive Macroglossia and Dysphagia as the Initial Manifestation of Systemic Amyloid Light-Chain (AL) Amyloidosis Associated With Multiple Myeloma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Systemic amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis is characterized by the extracellular deposition of misfolded immunoglobulin light chains in tissues and is often associated with plasma cell dyscrasias, including multiple myeloma. Macroglossia is an uncommon but characteristic manifestation and may rarely be the presenting feature. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman who presented with progressive tongue enlargement, dysphagia, and significant weight loss over six months. Laboratory evaluation revealed severe anemia, hypercalcemia, markedly elevated serum free kappa light chains with a prof

Diagnostic limitations of routine low-coverage CNV-seq in detecting mosaic paternal uniparental disomy in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an overgrowth disorder primarily caused by imprinting defects at 11p15.5. Mosaic paternal uniparental disomy (pUPD) accounts for approximately 20% of cases but is challenging to detect prenatally using routine low-coverage CNV-seq, as this approach has limited sensitivity for copy-number-neutral events such as uniparental disomy, particularly when present in a mosaic state. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a newborn presenting with macroglossia, giant omphalocele, and a birth weight of 4,200 g (>97th percentile). Critically, routine prenatal CNV-se

Association between upper airway obstruction and pulmonary hypertension in children with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common nonlethal chromosomal aneuploidy, affecting 1 in 700 live births. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) occurs in approximately 25% of children with DS and contributes to a 10% mortality rate within 3  years of diagnosis. Despite obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affecting up to 80% of children with DS, the specific contribution of upper airway obstruction to PH in this population remains poorly characterized. This review synthesizes current evidence to address that gap. RECENT FINDINGS: Children with DS develop multilevel upper airway obstruction du

Successful Medical Management of Severe Macroglossia Associated With Lingual Abscess in a Dog.

A 9 yr old castrated male French bulldog, weighing 13.9 kg, presented with acute tongue swelling. Physical examination revealed marked macroglossia. Computed tomography (CT) showed a cavitary lesion extending from the lingual root to the body with rim enhancement. These CT findings were highly suggestive of a lingual abscess, and the lesion was aspirated. Cytological examination revealed degenerate neutrophils and intracellular bacteria, confirming a lingual abscess. Following aspiration, fluid therapy, systemic antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory dose of prednisolone were administered. The mac

Myogenic dysregulation underlies human tongue overgrowth in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

Macroglossia is a clinically significant feature of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), but the cellular basis of tongue overgrowth remains poorly defined. Using pediatric tongue specimens from molecularly defined BWS subtypes and age-matched nonBWS controls, we show that BWS macroglossia is characterized by skeletal muscle fiber hypertrophy rather than increased fiber number. This phenotype is not explained by expansion or increased proliferation of satellite cells in situ, and isolated tongue satellite cells do not exhibit enhanced proliferation under growth conditions in vitro. Instead, BWS

Bilateral ovarian steroid cell tumor in a postmenopausal woman with progressive hyperandrogenism.

Severe hyperandrogenism with new-onset virilization in postmenopausal women is rare and often associated with androgen-secreting tumors. Nevertheless, a comprehensive differential diagnosis must be considered, including ovarian hyperthecosis and Cushing syndrome. We report a 71-year-old woman with progressive hirsutism over 1-2 years, presenting with severe hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. Physical examination revealed moderate hirsutism with a score of 15 according to the modified Ferriman-Gallwey scale, androgenic alopecia, dental diastema, macroglossia, and acanthosis. Hormonal anal

An Oral Cavity Mass in a 5-Year-Old Girl.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic malformations are rare congenital vascular anomalies that most commonly affect the head and neck regions. Cervicofacial lesions extending into the oral cavity or upper airway can result in dysphagia, bleeding, malnutrition, and airway obstruction. Emergency assessment is particularly challenging because significant anatomic distortion can exist even when physiologic parameters remain stable, necessitating thorough airway evaluation and early anticipation of potential clinical deterioration. CASE REPORT: A 5-year-old girl who had recently emigrated from Peru presented wit

The Natural Evolution of Macroglossia Among Beckwith-Wiedemann Patients: A 30-Year Institutional Review.

BACKGROUND: Macroglossia is a hallmark of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). Tongue reduction surgery is classically performed to address such issues, but its necessity in patients without airway or feeding compromise remains debated. This study evaluates long-term outcomes of conservative management. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with BWS seen from 1993 to 2023 was performed. Data collected included demographics, comorbidities, occlusion, cephalometrics, and speech outcomes. Dental and dento-skeletal measures were compared with age- and sex-matched standards. RESULTS: Of 59 pa

Fissured Tongue associated with Hypothyroidism in a Young Patient.

Fissured tongue is a benign oral condition characterized by grooves or fissures on the dorsal surface of the tongue and is often considered idiopathic. However, it has occasionally been reported in association with systemic disorders, including endocrine abnormalities. We report the case of an 18-year-old male who presented with fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, and progressive fissuring of the tongue over several years. Intraoral examination revealed multiple prominent fissures on the dorsal surface of the tongue with mild macroglossia. Laboratory investigations demonstrated elevated th
