Immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis in the setting of multiple myeloma diagnosed from oral biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, the most common clinical form of systemic amyloidosis, is a serious condition that may affect the oral mucosa. Although macroglossia is the most common manifestation, other oral mucosal sites may be involved. This case report describes AL amyloidosis diagnosed by oral biopsy in a patient who was subsequently found to have multiple myeloma. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old woman sought treatment because of multifocal oral nodules, fatigue, weight loss, shoulder and low back pain, congestive heart failure, chronic anemia, cough, episodes o

Lymphangioma-Induced Macroglossia in an Adolescent: A Case Report.

Lymphangioma is a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system, commonly affecting the head and neck region. Macroglossia due to lymphangioma in adolescence is uncommon, making this case noteworthy. This condition can affect oral function, speech, and quality of life, making early diagnosis and intervention essential. This report highlights a 14-year-old Balouch female presenting with progressive tongue enlargement beginning at age five. Intraoral examination revealed an enlarged tongue with a pebbly surface, particularly involving the ventral side of the tongue, without osseous involvement

Mucocutaneous Manifestations of Primary Systemic Amyloidosis: A Descriptive Study from Eastern India.

INTRODUCTION: Primary systemic amyloidosis (PSA), also referred to as amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, is characterized by the deposition of insoluble monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains or L-chain fragments in a variety of tissues and organs of the body. There is a dearth of literature regarding the mucocutaneous manifestations of PSA in the Indian population, which prompted us to undertake the present study. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: We aimed to study the clinical characteristics of mucocutaneous manifestations in patients with PSA at a tertiary care center in Kolkata. PATIENTS AND METHOD

Successful management of lymphangioma circumscriptum of the tongue with sirolimus monotherapy: a case report.

Lymphangiomas are uncommon congenital benign tumors of the lymphatic system. They are typically diagnosed at birth and develop during the first years of life. The tongue is the most commonly affected structure in the oral cavity. Lymphangioma circumscriptum of the tongue is a common cause of macroglossia in children, and this macroglossia can lead to complications such as exclusive nasal breathing, airway obstructions, impaired oral feeding, esthetic disfigurement, and difficulties in mastication, swallowing, and speech. This report discusses the successful treatment of lymphangioma circumscri

[Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in adults (2025)].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder with a considerable healthcare burden. Previously, the 2011 guideline for adult obstructive sleep apnea was largely formulated on the basis of expert opinion and consensus, which played an important role in guiding clinical practice. With the growing body of evidence from high-quality clinical studies, however, guideline development models that rely primarily on expert consensus are no longer adequate to support contemporary clinical decision-making. To further standardize the screening, diagnosis, treatment,

Outcomes of Tongue Reduction Surgery in Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Macroglossia is a frequent clinical feature of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a congenital overgrowth disorder. Macroglossia can lead to abnormal breathing, feeding, speech, and dentoskeletal development. Partial glossectomy is a common intervention aimed at reducing these abnormalities. The optimal timing of partial glossectomy remains controversial due to the potential need for secondary surgery and the ongoing growth of the tongue in early childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After PRISMA-ScR and PRISMA-S reporting standards, this systematic review included English language

Postprandial Hypoglycemia in a Patient With Clinical Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

A male neonate exhibited hallmark features of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) including large for gestational age, macroglossia, multiple ear pits, and umbilical hernia. He had neonatal hypoglycemia, requiring a glucose infusion rate of 9.7 mg/kg/min. Over time, he demonstrated persistent hypoglycemia with point-of-care glucose <60 mg/dL (<3.3 mmol/L) (70-140 mg/dL, 3.9-7.8 mmol/L) prompting a critical sample. A diagnostic fast of 13 hours revealed no hypoglycemia <50 mg/dL. However, he was found to have postprandial hypoglycemia after 2 hours to 58 mg/dL (3.2 mmol/L) (70-140 mg/dL, 3.9-7.8
