Surgical management of the second cavernous lymphangioma in the tongue globally: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Oral Lymphangioma is a rare benign tumor that arises from the lymphatic vessels in oral cavity. It is a development defect in the lymphatic system, which is less common than other types of vascular anomalies, and the incidence in the general population is very low, especially in the oral cavity. It typically presents as soft, painless swelling, often found on the tongue, lips or floor or the mouth. The lesions can vary in size and may have a translucent appearance, sometimes resembling a cyst. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old male complaint of congenital diffuse,

Phenotypes of headache in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), characterized by repeatedly collapse of upper airway while sleeping, is a common disease; estimated to have a prevalence of 57% in adults. Headache is a common neurological symptom and can be bothersome. A meta-analysis found that 33% of patients with OSA may have headaches. There is limited data on risk factors for having headache in patients with OSA. This study aimed to find risk factors or phenotypes of headache in patients with OSA. This was a retrospective analytical study. The inclusion criteria were adult patients with age of 18 years or over and diagnose

Association between serum levels of inflammatory mediators and periodontitis severity in people with down syndrome.

Evidence suggests that individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of periodontal disease (PD). Factors such as muscular hypotonia, macroglossia, intellectual deficits, and reduced motor coordination, often combined with inadequate dietary habits, contribute to the development of PD. Additionally, a compromised immune response may explain the altered inflammatory profile that affects the systemic and oral health of this population. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between serum levels of inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-10, IL-17, IL-1β, IL-4, and TNF-α) and the sev

Conservative Management of Macroglossia in Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: While severe macroglossia in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is often treated with tongue reduction surgery, most patients with mild to moderate macroglossia are nonsurgically managed. Given that outcomes for these conservatively managed patients are not well characterized, this study aims to describe the natural history of patients with macroglossia and BWS who did not undergo early surgery. METHODS: Records of patients with BWS and macroglossia seen between 2004-2024 were reviewed. Conservative management was defined as not having had surgery during the first 3 years of life

Immediate Autologous Breast Reconstruction in a Patient With Achondroplasia.

Achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant condition resulting in skeletal dysplasia and abnormal endochondral bone formation. Many clinical features, including short stature, macroglossia, midface retrusion, and restrictive lung disease, may pose anesthetic and surgical risks. We present a case of a 36-year-old female with right inflammatory breast cancer who underwent immediate autologous breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap complicated by hypoxic respiratory failure. We review the literature on this topic and associated preoperative and postoperative challenges

The Effect of Tongue Volume and Adipose Content on Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Meta-analysis & Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Macroglossia is a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and has been linked to an elevated apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Obesity may contribute to macroglossia, but its exact relationship is unknown and likely multifactorial, and the degree to which increased adiposity of the tongue affects the development of OSA is not understood. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate how tongue fat and volume relate to the presence and severity of OSA. DATA SOURCES: Studies reporting the impact of tongue fat or volume were identified using predefined inclusion criteria from Se

Novel WAC gene variant identified in the first documented case of DeSanto-Shinawi Syndrome in India.

BACKGROUND: DeSanto-Shinawi Syndrome (DESSH) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disability, behavioral abnormalities, and distinctive dysmorphic features, linked to likely pathogenic/pathogenic variants in the WAC gene. We report the first documented case of DESSH in India, identified in a 3-year-old male presenting with global developmental delay and coarse facies. RESULTS: Exome sequencing revealed a novel heterozygous nonsense likely pathogenic variant (c.1661 C>A(p.Ser554*)) in the WAC gene, expanding the genotypic spectrum associated with this condition.

Maternal Cell-Free DNA Analysis in a Fetus Affected by Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome: Potential for Prenatal Diagnosis.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a condition present from birth that involves excessive growth and is linked to changes in specific genes located on chromosome 11p15.5. Prenatal diagnosis is mainly based on imaging findings such as macrosomia, macroglossia, and omphalocele, but detection remains difficult. We report a case of a fetus suspected of having BWS based on prenatal ultrasound and MRI. A female infant was delivered via cesarean section at 37 weeks and one day of gestation, showing macrosomia, macroglossia, and other clinical features consistent with BWS. To explore potential bioma

Multidiscipline Therapy: Cervicofacial Vascular Anomaly With Macroglossia, Maxillofacial Deformity.

Vascular malformations are congenital vascular developmental defects that usually grow slowly and persist throughout life. Venous malformations (VMs) are the most prevalent type of vascular anomalies, representing roughly 70% of all cases. VMs can cause significant pain, impaired mobility, disrupt organ function, and in severe cases, become life-threatening. Intralesional sclerotherapy after tracheotomy is a safe and effective treatment for extensive VMs involving oropharyngeal areas of the head and neck. For the first time, we present a life-threatening case in which tracheostomy was not feas

Management of Congenital Macroglossia Due to Lymphatic Malformation in a Child with Review of Literature.

Lymphangiomas are uncommon congenital hamartomas of the lymphatic system with a marked predilection for the head-and-neck region accounting for 75% of all cases. Lymphangiomas rarely affect the oral cavity. Affected sites in the oral cavity may include the tongue, palate, gingiva, lips, and alveolar ridge of the mandible. The anterior two-thirds on the dorsal surface of the tongue is the most common site for intraoral lymphangiomas leading to macroglossia, similar to the presentation in our case. Congenital macroglossia is a rare clinical condition characterized by an enlarged tongue. This enl

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for ballistic injuryinduced traumatic macroglossia.

As a life-saving measure, in patients experiencing traumatic macroglossia, a definitive airway may be required to protect the airway until the oedema resolves. The utilisation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has the potential to expedite the resolution of traumatic macroglossia and subsequent extubation of the patient. The following case report discusses a patient who experienced traumatic macroglossia following a ballistics injury in which HBOT was utilised. A man in his 20s experienced a gunshot to the mouth. On postoperative day (POD) 1 following surgical intervention which included the

Supraglottic airway devices in neuroanesthesia practice: A narrative review.

Supraglottic airway devices (SADs) have a great application as an alternative to tracheal intubation, prompting a paradigm shift in routine anesthetic practice. However, its usage in neuroanesthesia is limited and debatable, considering the clinical challenges and complexity of neurosurgical procedures. Even though literature evidence exits regarding successful airway management with SADs in neurosurgery, there is no clear-cut evidence or consensus among anesthesiologists. Articles were searched in PubMed and Google Scholar by using the keywords "Supraglottic airway" AND "Laryngeal Mask" OR "L
