Lingual frenulum, craniofacial morphology, and obstructive sleep apnea: a mediation analysis.

PURPOSE: An abnormal lingual frenulum is an important risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study evaluated the potential role of craniofacial characteristics in the predisposition of a short lingual frenulum and reduced tongue mobility in the development of OSA. METHODS: This cross-sectional, case-control study recruited participants with and without OSA. Craniofacial and frenulum measurements were obtained using photogrammetry. Tongue mobility was evaluated by measuring tongue range of motion ratio. Mediation analysis was performed to determine whether the effect of the lingual

Lingual and Cervical Ectopic Thyroid: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Multiple foci of ectopic thyroid tissue are rare and result from abnormal migration of the thyroid gland during embryonic development. This condition may manifest at various sites along the thyroglossal tract. Although often asymptomatic, depending on the location and functional capacity of the ectopic gland, it can cause significant compressive symptoms and may be associated with congenital or acquired hypothyroidism. We reported the case of a 37-year-old woman with hypothyroidism who had a symptomatic cervical nodule with progressive enlargement. Imaging revealed an ectopic thyroid at the ba

First Case Report of Agnathia-Otocephaly Complex Reported in Niger.

Agnathia-otocephaly complex (AOC) is an extremely rare congenital malformation resulting from a disorder of the first branchial arch. In the past, this condition was considered lethal. However, milder variants of the isolated type of AOC have been reported as non-lethal. The condition is characterized by hypoplasia or the absence of the mandible (micrognathia/agnathia), variable displacement of the ears (melotia) with or without auricular fusion (synotia), and a small oral aperture or absence of mouth (microstomia/astomia), with or without tongue hypoplasia or absence (aglossia). AOC can occur

Bronchogenic Cyst of the Tongue: Congenital Tongue Masses.

Bronchogenic cysts, a subgroup of foregut duplication cysts, are rare congenital malformations of ventral foregut development. These cysts can be found ectopically along the entire developmental pathway of the foregut. Less than 1% of bronchogenic cysts are found in the oral cavity, with fewer than 10 cases previously reported in the literature. These lesions typically present asymptomatically shortly after birth but have the potential to cause respiratory and/or feeding difficulties. Treatment is surgical excision, and histopathology is ultimately required to reach a definitive diagnosis and

Assessment of airway characteristics in Pierre Robin sequence using computed tomography-based 3-dimensional reconstruction and numerical simulation.

BACKGROUND: Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) syndrome has clinical features of small mandible, tongue drooping, and respiratory obstruction. This study compared the 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the upper airway anatomy based on computed tomography (CT) data between PRS and normal control (NC) children, and analyzed the dynamical changes and airflow field using computer fluid dynamics (CFD) between the two populations. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 66 PRS and 23 NC children, and all CT data were obtained and used for reconstruction and numerical simulation. 10 anatomical l

HLA genotype, clinical and immunofluorescence findings of 30 patients with type VII collagen antibody positive subepidermal bullous disease.

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) and mucous membrane pemphigoid are mucocutaneous blistering disorders that are associated with antibodies that target type VII collagen (anti-col7). There are relatively few studies that closely investigate the clinical phenotype and HLA genotype of patients who are anti-col7 positive. We therefore characterized all patients with anti-col7-positive subepidermal bullous disease that were treated at our centre. In total, 30 patients were identified, 29 had mechanobullous skin lesions and all had oral ulceration. The most common sites for oral lesions were th

Pediatric Lymphangioma of the Tongue, From Diagnosis to Surgery: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphangioma is a rare pediatric benign lesion caused by a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. Most often (50%-70%) lymphatic malformations affect skin and subcutaneous tissue of the head and neck region, rarely the oral cavity. Intraoral lymphatic malformation occurs most commonly on the dorsum of the tongue, followed by the palate, buccal mucosa, gums, and lips. Lymphatic malformations are clinically and radiologically classified into three types, according to the cystic size: microcystic (< 1 cm), macrocystic (> 1 cm), and mixed. Differential diagnoses for lingual

Systematic Review of Safety and Efficacy of Positional Therapy as First-line Management for Robin Sequence.

Infants with Robin Sequence (RS) frequently present with breathing difficulties and there may be concomitant feeding issues, most commonly as a result of upper airway obstruction (UAO). Positional therapy (PT) is thought to alleviate UAO in RS by allowing the posteriorly displaced tongue to fall forward. However, an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) associated with prone positioning is well documented in previously healthy infants, raising concern about the use of PT in infants with RS. Our aim was to collate and evaluate the published evidence regarding the safety and effi

Feasibility and use of quantitative tools for the diagnosis of Ankyloglossia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue tie, is a congenital condition wherein the lingual frenum is tethered to the floor of the mouth. The classification protocols traditionally used for the diagnosis of ankyloglossia that have been described in literature lack coherence in terms of their subjective nature and application across different age groups. The use of quantitative tools provides a means of assessing the lingual frenulum that is both reproducible as well as objective, improving the accuracy of diagnoses and reducing operator bias. AIM: This systematic review aims to ide

Complete Protocol and Guidelines for the Implementation and Manufacturing of the Tübingen Palatal Plate-An Interdisciplinary Technical Note on the Tübingen Approach for Infants with Robin Sequence.

Robin sequence (RS) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by micrognathia, glossoptosis, and upper airway obstruction (UAO), often accompanied by a cleft palate. The Tübingen Palatal Plate (TPP), also referred to as the pre-epiglottic baton plate (PEBP), offers a non-surgical, functional orthodontic solution that improves airway patency and feeding by advancing the tongue base. This paper outlines the semi-digital clinical and technical workflow used for TPP treatment at Tübingen University Hospital. The protocol combines intraoral scanning (IOS), computer-aided design and manufacturing (

Midline Anterior Neck Inclusion Cyst in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review with a Dermatologic Perspective.

Midline Anterior Neck Inclusion Cysts (MANICs) are rare congenital anomalies caused by improper embryonic fusion. These superficial benign lesions typically appear yellowish and cystic without deeper anatomic connections. We describe an 11-month-old boy with a stable, asymptomatic, yellow, elastic cystic lesion on the midline of the anterior neck, measuring 4 mm and present since shortly after birth. Clinical, dermoscopic, and ultrasound evaluations confirmed the diagnosis of MANIC. Over six months of observation, the lesion remained stable without growth, infection, or symptoms. MANICs are be
