The study was carried out on 28 dysgnathic patients submitted to surgical correction of malocclusion with the use of latero-lateral X-rays pre- and postoperatively. Cephalometry included a tongue and hyoid bone profiles and changes were assessed and quantified. It was interesting to note that aspecific evaluation of progenia patients confirmed the raising of the tongue and the lowering of the hyoid bone. Evaluation of the type of operation carried out led to further considerations. In patients undergoing combined operation there was a prevalence of a raising of the two components; mandible ope

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) occurred in five members in three generations of a white American family of Scandinavian descent. Six other family members had malignancies including malignant melanoma, malignant lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, adenocarcinoma of the colon, and asynchronous bilateral in situ and invasive ductal carcinomas of the breast. There was also a history of autoimmune disorders and exposure to smoke, fumes, and chemicals in some family members. Regression analysis revealed a significant covariate risk for exposure to smoking, alcohol ingestion, dust, salte

Common congenital malformations such as cleft lip and cleft palate are in most cases multifactorial in origin, involving both environmental and genetic components. Molecular biology techniques have enabled the successful chromosomal localization of many mutant genes from disorders that exhibit simple Mendelian segregation, whether autosomally dominant (e.g., Huntington's disease), autosomal recessive (e.g., cystic fibrosis), or X-linked (e.g., Duchenne muscular dystrophy). Studying the genetic aspect of multifactorial disorders is more complex. It requires a model family or families within whi

We report on 4 individuals with the fragile X [fra(X)] syndrome and the Robin sequence (or elements of that sequence). To our knowledge, this association has been described in only one other boy. However, males with the fra(X) syndrome have been reported to have an increased incidence of cleft palate. We recommend that children with a cleft palate or the Robin sequence be assessed for developmental delays and a family history of mental retardation. The fra(X) syndrome may be one of the genetic causes of the Robin sequence and, when indicated, children with the sequence should be tested for fra

We describe a case of coarctation of aorta with two unusual associated anomalies, namely, a diverticulum of the left ventricle and double orifice of the mitral valve. Echocardiography and colour flow mapping precisely diagnosed the bridging tongue of leaflet tissue responsible for the double orifice of the mitral valve. Balloon angioplasty for coarctation produced dramatic benefits which are sustained at follow-up. The other two lesions caused no haemodynamic abnormality.

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a very rare hereditary disorder of keratinization. Immunohistological findings has so far been lacking. Reported in this paper is a case of Jadassohn-Lewandowsky type PC in a woman aged 18 years on which immunohistological investigations could be performed. Several monoclonal antibodies to filaggrin and keratin were used to stain tissue sections of lesional plantar skin, with a view to studying impairment of epidermal differentiation. While staining patterns comparable to those of normal skin were exhibited by anti-filaggrin and some antikeratins (RPN 1161, A51-B

Reliable information on embryonic and fetal development of the human oro-facial system is meager. Much of the data available at present is not entirely reliable, because it was derived from a small number of specimens. An embryological approach with human materials is important for establishing a normal standard of development including individual variabilities as well as clarifying the embryogenesis and etiology of defective development (Nishimura et al. 1977). It is important in human craniofacial embryology to know the variabilities, that is, individual differences in developmental phenomen

In neonates and infants facial and/or craniofacial involvement occurs in a large number of malformative syndromes the pathogenesis of which is obscure in most cases. This, added to clinical polymorphism, hinders all attempts at classification. However, chromosomal aberrations, as demonstrated by karyotype analysis, can be distinguished from other congenital conditions where the predominant site of the anomaly may help clinicians in their research. Thus, among congenital syndromes of probable genetic origin, the author studies those that are most frequent or most characteristic, i.e. craniosten

Achondroplasia is characterized by an undergrowth of arms and legs bones, low height and undergrowth of the Basis cranil. The name of this disease was called Chondrodystrohia foetalis before Parrot reported the name of this disease as Achondroplasia, distinguished from other similar diseases. We are reporting in this paper on an 11-year, 2-month-old girl with Achondroplasia. The dental findings as follows: 1) Open bite was observed for the front teeth. 2) The size, number, form and growth of the teeth were usual. 3) The tongue was a little bigger than usual. 4) According to X-ray cephalometric

Down syndrome (DS), the phenotypic expression of human trisomy 21, is presumed to result from overexpression of certain genes residing on chromosome 21 at the segment 21q22-the Down locus. The "housekeeping" enzyme CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) is encoded by a gene from that region and its activity is elevated in DS patients. To investigate the possible involvement of CuZnSOD gene dosage in the etiology of the syndrome we have developed both cellular and animal models which enabled us to investigate the physiological consequences resulting from overexpression of the CuZnSOD gene. 1. Hypoglossia and aglossia are rare congenital malformations, especially when found as isolated abnormalities. In view of their usual association with other anomalies of the face, oral cavity, and distal extremities, an accurate investigation is required. We describe a 2-year-old girl with isolated hypoglossia and severe dental disease. Clinical understanding of the changes in the mechanisms of oral suction, mastication, swallowing, and speech, as well as the existing dental occlusion, requires a multidisciplinary team approach so that a more effective treatment can be administered.

A 57-year-old woman was admitted to Kakeyu Hospital complaining of paresis of the left upper and lower extremities which suddenly developed three years ago. Neurological examination revealed spastic paresis of the left upper and lower limbs without facial and lingual paresis. The reflexes were abnormally brisk on both sides but they were more remarkable on the left side, which also showed Babinski's sign. Sensitivity to light touch and vibration was moderately decreased and sensitivity to pinprick and joint position was minimally decreased in the left upper and lower extremities. No cerebellar

A survey of the health problems of 87 individuals with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita revealed a high proportion (51) with major feeding difficulties in infancy. This was generally related to structural abnormalities of the jaw and tongue. Children thus involved were more prone to recurrent chest infections, constipation, and poor growth and weight gain. In addition, there was a strong association between initial feeding difficulties and subsequent language problems. Early identification of a sub-group of children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is therefore possible who may requir

A full-term female newborn calf of the Japanese black short-horn breed which was two-headed (dicephalus) and had two incomplete necks was carefully dissected. The calf was one of twins, the other being a normal male. There was no record of reproductive problems with the cow. The left and right heads were of almost the same size and shape. Each head had a nose, mouth, eyeballs, and ears. The brains were very congested. That is to say, in both the left and right brains, the longitudinal fissure was unclear, and these was narrower pattern in the cerebral gyri. The surfaces of the two brains displ

From 1st January to 31st August 1989 2,248 healthy, mature infants were delivered at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Graz, Austria. They were routinely examined on day 1 and before discharge from hospital on day 4. Attention was paid to the presence or absence of minor abnormalities such as skin lesions, eruptions or rashes, cephalhaematoma, tongue tie, undescended testis, increased physiological jaundice, heart murmurs, talipes calcaneo-valgus, hip click, fracture of the clavicle and other common abnormalities and limb deformities. 20.9% of the investigated babies had no such

Information was available on 293 family members and spouses of seven generations in an Icelandic family with high frequency of cleft of secondary palate and ankyloglossia. The authors have personally investigated 182 individuals in generations IV-VII and have drawn blood from over 100 members for genetic marker studies. The senior author, Dr. Björnsson, has operated on two-thirds of the affected individuals. Twenty-six family members had cleft palate (CP) and, of these, 19 (17 male and two females) had ankyloglossia as well (CP + A). Twenty females and one male had only ankyloglossia (A). All

The level of intelligibility attained by speakers with cleft palate reflects not only the ability to achieve adequate velopharyngeal closure but other complex variables as well. When closure is inadequate, performance is influenced by compensatory responses of the tongue, vocal folds, respiratory muscles and nasal valve. The purpose of the present study was to determine how a loss of velar resistance associated with velopharyngeal inadequacy affects speech pressures and airflow. The pressure-flow technique (Warren, 1979) was used to assess mean airflow rate, mean intraoral and nasal pressures

Clinical follow-up study after the grafting with fresh autogenous iliac bone to the alveolar clefts in cleft lip and palate patients was carried out up to 2 years post operation. Twenty two patients were examined, to whom grafts of iliac cortical or iliac marrow bone was carried out by the First or the Second Department of Oral Surgery, Kagoshima University Dental School from July, 1985 to April, 1988. Their cleft types were classified as 18 unilateral and 4 bilateral cleft lips and palates. The ages at bone grafting were ranged from 8 years 9 months to 17 years 6 months, and the average of wh

This study was designed to compare pre-operation, immediate post-operation and over 6 month's follow-up for the mandibular prognathism in order to investigate the changes in the upper airway following mandibular osteotomy. The subjects were 18 patients. Their lateral cephalograms were taken pre-operatively, immediate post-operatively and over 6 months after operation and traced and analysed based on 10 selected items. The following conclusions were reached. 1) The downward displacement of the hyoid bone was recognized right after operation. (P less than 0.01) The hyoid bone tended to move to t

Some defects related to untreated palatal or residual clefts represent major deformities. A review of 177 cases, untreated or operated on according to Schwekkendiek's (1958) chronology, was carried out. The advantage of simultaneous operative techniques is discussed, specifically pharyngoplasties, vestibular flap rotation, and osteoplastic closure. When all other surgical possibilities have failed, some flaps have been used to restore mucosal continuity. A multidisciplinary evaluation of each individual case is emphasized.
