Multimodal therapy with percutaneous sclerotherapy, partial excision, and pulsed dye laser for lip arteriovenous malformations: a case series.

Lip arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare vascular anomalies that cause significant functional and aesthetic problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of multimodal therapy combining percutaneous sclerotherapy, partial excision, and pulsed dye laser. A retrospective review was conducted of 20 patients (11 female, nine male; median age 37 years) with lip AVMs treated between 2008 and 2019. All patients underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous sclerotherapy using 3% foamed polidocanol, with additional use of absolute ethanol in four patients. Near-infrare

Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid-induced inhibition of human palate cell proliferation through upregulation of miR-374a-5p.

Per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose significant global health risks. Although the use of classical PFAS such as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is regulated, the toxicological effects of alternative PFASs remain unknown. Cleft palate is a congenital condition influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Although PFOS has been linked to cleft palate, the effects of other PFAS compounds remain unexplored. The aim of this study was to clarify the involvement of classical and alternative PFAS (PFHxA and PFHxS) in human embryonic palatal

The Impact of Genetics on Craniofacial Dysplasias and Consequent Oral Malformations-Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diseases affecting the craniofacial skeleton are normally associated with disturbances in the regulation of cellular differentiation, the development of bone structures, and changes in bone density and ossification. Thus, the objective of this integrative review is to evaluate the published scientific literature from the last 8 years concerning the impact of genetics on some craniofacial dysplasias. Our aim covers the identification of oral cavity alterations to those dysplasias, through the most common orofacial manifestations. Three dysplasias were selected to be part

The influence of brachytherapy on tooth development: a longitudinal study of pediatric head and neck tumor survivors.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial brachytherapy is an effective and organ-preserving radiotherapeutic modality for pediatric and adolescent patients with head and neck tumors, offering favorable outcomes with minimal impact on surrounding normal tissues. However, the long-term effects of brachytherapy on dental development in young patients remain underexplored, despite clinical observations of tooth anomalies in tumor survivors. This study aimed to provide longitudinal outcomes of tooth developmental anomalies in pediatric and adolescent tumor survivors who underwent head and neck interstitial brachyt

Effectiveness of fissure sealants following different silver fluoride application protocols in MIH-affected molars: randomized clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical efficacy of glass ionomer sealants (GIS) and resin-based sealants (RBS) applied immediately or one week after silver fluoride (SF) application to permanent molars affected by molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) in children at high risk for caries. METHODS: A total of 216 MIH-affected molars (ICDAS 1–2) from 102 children aged 6–14 years were randomly allocated to six groups: Resin- or glass ionomer–based fissure sealants were placed either one week after the application of silver fluoride or during the same clinical session. In the same-visit protocols, se

Water Fluoridation Risks or Benefits: Summary of the Symposium Presented During the Enamel 11 Meeting Held in Paris France.

Fluoride is widely used in dentistry to prevent dental caries. Fluoride can be naturally present in ground waters, and as a public health measure, many countries have added fluoride to drinking water. Experimental studies show that fluoride can affect the cells of the developing tooth organ to result in dental fluorosis, and cellular effects of fluoride raise concerns about potential neurodevelopmental and endocrine effects. Evidence of increasing levels of fluorosis in populations, have led regulatory organizations to revise their recommendations for optimal doses. To review the scientific ev

Generalised hypertaurodontism involving all primary molars in a non-syndromic child.

Generalised hypertaurodontism involving all primary molars is an extremely rare finding, particularly in non-syndromic children. This case describes a male child presenting with pain in the mandibular posterior region. Clinical examination revealed multiple carious lesions while radiographic evaluation demonstrated taurodont morphology affecting all primary first and second molars. Quantitative analysis using the Shifman and Chanannel index confirmed hypertaurodontism in all eight primary molars. Comprehensive clinical assessment excluded associated syndromic conditions. The symptomatic tooth

Comparative analysis of soft tissue response after orthognathic surgery in patients with and without cleft using 3D imaging: A preliminary study.

This study investigated differences in upper lip soft tissue response to skeletal movement between patients with and without cleft following orthognathic surgery. Twelve patients with Class III dentofacial deformities underwent orthognathic surgery: six with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate and six age- and sex-matched non-cleft controls. Hard tissue movement was measured using 3D surgical simulation, and soft tissue changes were assessed with 3D photogrammetry. The cleft group showed significantly greater advancement across all hard tissue landmarks compared to the non-cleft group (p

Sustained efficacy and long-term outcomes of autologous oral mucosal epithelial cell sheet transplantation for pediatric esophageal anastomotic restenosis.

Refractory anastomotic restenosis following surgery for congenital esophageal atresia (CEA) or congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) remains a serious complication in pediatric surgery. Repeated endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) under general anesthesia often impairs growth, feeding function, and overall quality of life (QOL). We have developed a regenerative therapy using autologous oral mucosal epithelial cell sheets. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of epithelial cell sheet transplantation for refractory esophageal restenosis in pediatric patients. Between 201

Congenital double lower lip in a newborn with feeding difficulties.

We describe the case of a full-term male newborn admitted on the first day of life due to feeding difficulties and hypoglycemia, who presented with a protruding bifid mass along the mucosa of the lower lip that interfered with breastfeeding. Double lip is a rare congenital condition caused by hyperplasia of the lip mucosa, most commonly affecting the upper lip. Surgical removal is generally recommended if the condition interferes with speech, sucking, or, more commonly, for cosmetic reasons. In this case treatment was conservative, resolving feeding difficulties without the need for surgery, w

Laryngeal Mask Airway-Guided Fiberoptic Tracheal Intubation After Traumatic Failed Intubation in a Neonate With Severe Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita: A Case Report.

Airway management in neonates with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) presents extreme challenges due to craniofacial abnormalities, cervical rigidity, limited mouth opening, and restrictive chest wall mechanics. These patients are at increased risk of failed intubation and perioperative respiratory complications, as airway trauma may rapidly develop, causing airway edema and compromising oxygenation. Early recognition and individualized airway planning are essential to avoid repeated traumatic airway manipulation and its associated complications. In our case, a full-term male neonate wi

First Case Report of Agnathia-Otocephaly Complex Reported in Niger.

Agnathia-otocephaly complex (AOC) is an extremely rare congenital malformation resulting from a disorder of the first branchial arch. In the past, this condition was considered lethal. However, milder variants of the isolated type of AOC have been reported as non-lethal. The condition is characterized by hypoplasia or the absence of the mandible (micrognathia/agnathia), variable displacement of the ears (melotia) with or without auricular fusion (synotia), and a small oral aperture or absence of mouth (microstomia/astomia), with or without tongue hypoplasia or absence (aglossia). AOC can occur

Integrated surgical approaches for caustic ingestion-induced microstomia.

BACKGROUND: Caustic ingestion-induced microstomia causes profound functional impairment, which limits mouth opening, speech, feeding, and overall quality of life, particularly in children. Published management strategies are heterogeneous and lack a standardized treatment protocol. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review (PROSPERO CRD420251106502) of the literature on caustic ingestion-induced microstomia and present a series of 11 patients treated using a standardized institutional protocol. Data collected included demographics, causative agents, surgical techniques, appli

Progressive Pseudorheumatoid Dysplasia Presenting with Cauda Equina Compression: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Fresh vegetables are essential human dietary components but are increasingly implicated in foodborne infections caused by Escherichia coli. Contamination may occur during cultivation, irrigation, handling, and retail display, and the presence of pathogenic or antimicrobial-resistant E. coli poses significant public health risks. Despite widespread vegetable consumption in Ogun State, Nigeria, limited data exist on the resistance and virulence characteristics of E. coli in these foods. This study therefore assessed antimicrobial resistance profiles and virulence genes in E. coli isolat

Early-life stress signatures in deciduous incisor microstructure: An odontochronological case study of monozygotic twins discordant for cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether early-life stress events can be detected and chronologically dated through microscopic analysis of deciduous teeth. A unique case of monozygotic twins was used-one born with cleft lip and palate (CLP) who underwent early surgical interventions, and the other born without major health conditions. DESIGN: Histological thin sections of four naturally shed deciduous incisors were analyzed using polarized light microscopy. Accentuated growth lines-microscopic features that form in response to systemic stress during tooth development-were compared with medica

Delayed diagnosis and successful surgical management of bilateral choanal atresia in a 10-year-old male: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Choanal atresia is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the blockage or narrowing of one or both posterior nasal passages (choanae), either due to membranous or bony obstruction. It occurs in approximately 1 in 7,000 to 1 in 10,000 live births. This condition can be unilateral or bilateral, with bilateral choanal atresia being more severe and typically presenting with significant symptoms early in life. Choanal atresia may lead to nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, snoring, difficulty feeding, cyanosis, and mouth breathing. It is often associated with other congenital anomal
