Twelve individuals with unoperated unilateral clefts of the lip and palate and eight with unoperated unilateral clefts of thelip and alveolus were examined clinically and cephalometrically. The two groups were compared to each other and to a matched sample of normal individuals. All subjects were examined in their native India. Based on the findings of this investigation, it is suggested that, in general, the cranial base and skeletal face are not extensively malrelated in individuals with either unoperated unilateral clefts of the lip and palate or of the lip and alveolus when compared to mat

Standardized steps or criteria for designing a triangular flap do not always fit for all types of cleft lip repair. Some compromise among the criteria is required, especially for atypical cases, such as those with a long vertical height on the noncleft side and a short lateral lip element. In order to secure symmetry in the horizontal length of vermilion, or in the distance from the peak of the cupid's bow to the mouth corner, E' should be located as high as allowable. The ratio of the length of the vertical incision to that of the triangular base affects the final shape of the repaired lip in

Two groups of individuals with isolated clefts of the palate were compared. One group had had the Von Langenbeck procedure performed at the University of Iowa and the other the V/W-Y (Wardill-Kilner) procedure performed in Denmark. All individuals in both groups were Caucasians. In order to avoid the influence of any possible ethnic differences on the interpretation of the results, each cleft group was initially compared to a matched non-cleft group from the same geographical area. Differences were then statistically evaluated using the Student t-test. The incidence of malocclusion in the two

Two cases of monoamniotic conjoined male twins, born at term after normal pregnancies, are reported. The first case, a bicephalus, shows hypoplastic and malformed left-side organs, absence of the left umbilical artery, and two communicating hearts, the left one with three cameras. The second case, a pygothoracopagus, consists in a twin "parasite", with no head but with two upper and two lower limbs, slightly less developed than those of the formed twin. The left eye of the formed twin is double than the right one and contains two eye apples -- one well-formed and the other rudimentary. There i

The authors present a form of heredodegenerative spinocerebellar ataxia with concomitant involvement of ectodermal structures, different from other variants. The disease was characterized by spinocerebellar ataxia (the complete form); curly, thin, short and dense hair, mikroskopically monilethrix; a characteristic face (hypertelorism, flattened and wide base of the nose, prominent nostrils, large mouth, thick lips); and abnormal teeth which were reduced in number and had gaps inbetween. The psycho intellectual development and the voice of the patient were normal. The first neurological symptom

Many inherited disorders have oral manifestations which can be detected on dental radiographs as alterations in the morphology or chemical composition of the teeth. Thus the dentist may be the first to detect disorders of development and metabolism of importance to the general health of the patient and his family. In one group of conditions the pulp chamber is larger than normal. This may be associated with taurodontism in such conditions as polyploidy of the -X chromosome and trisomy-21 or Down's syndrome. Taurodontism also occurs in a variety of other syndromes including the tricho-dento-oss

We present two own cases of the aglossy-adactyly syndrome and a review of 25 cases of the literature. Our experience concernes two girls. One was followed from birth until 4 1/2 years, the other from 5 to 9 years. This helped us to obtain a good knowledge of the development of these patients. Malformations of the mouth and of the limbs with a normal intelligence characterize the aglossy-adactyly syndrome. The most important features are: shortness of the tongue of variable degree, anomaly of the teeth, hypoplasia of the mandible and ectromelia of different extension with a peripheric predilect

A nephroblastoma occurred in the evolution of a case of Beckwith's syndrome. This rare association is not fortuitous. The bifocal character of the tumor is noted for the first time in the Beckwith's syndrome; however, it has already been observed in other conditions, which are known to promote the development of nephroblastomas. Wilm's tumor is only one of the tumors which may be associated with Beckwith's syndrome. These morbid associations and certain histological features bring together some material for the understanding of the nature of the histo-genetic relationship between different asp

The incidence of velopharyngeal competence noted in 267 cleft palate patients following palatoplsty has been reviewed. Comparisons have been drawn with regard to the cleft type and the surgical technique performed. Since there were relatively small numbers of subjects in some categories, differences in age at last examination between the von Langenbeck and V-Y palatoplasty groups, some patients were very young at time of evaluation, and a number of different surgeons at different levels of training and experience performed the surgery, the differences in velopharyngeal competence found should

In a series of 25 cases of mandibulofacial dysostosis, 7 patients had isolated clefts of the palate, 1 had a complete unilateral cleft of the lip and palate, and 8 had congenital palatopharyngeal incompetency (CPI). The CPI appeared in four forms: (a) complete agenesis of the soft palate, (b) foreshortening of the soft palate associated with a submucous defect of the hard palate, (c) submucous defect of the hard palate with adequate palatal length but inadequate elevation in speech, and (d) lack of adequate palatal elevation in the absence of a submucous defect or reduced length of the soft pa

The case of a 4-month-old male with de novo partial trisomy for chromosome 14 involving the p13 leads to q24 portion is reported. He presented with growth and psychomotor retardation, peculiar facies due to nose-mouth anomalies, monolateral microphtalmia, high arched palate, and anomalies of hands and feet. These symptoms are found also in the other 8 cases of partial trisomy 14 reported in the literature. This confirms a characteristic chromosomal syndrome although the breaking points on the extra chromosome 14 are not the same in the 9 cases. The clinical picture of our case calls for carefu

The parotid saliva in persons with Down's syndrome was analyzed for three enzymes: acid phosphatase, nonspecific esterase, and amylase. The results have shown a statistically significant elevation of esterase activity in persons with Down's syndrome whereas no statistical differences were observed with the other enzymes. The current investigation has provided further insight into salivary gland metabolism and may have yielded some information pertaining to the genetic control of the processes regulating the electrolyte concentration of human saliva.

In a Finnish rural population 79.0% of 233 persons had the cusp of Carabelli in first upper molars. Of these 20% showed "positive cusps" and 59% "negative cusps". The occurrence of the structure was bilateral with varying degrees of asymmetry, but if there was no structure on one side of the jaw, the other never showed the cusp. There was no sexual dimorphism either in the occurrence or in the degree of expression of character. Results of the statistical analyses suggested low heritability of the character. However, the dichotomy of having a cusp or not may have genetic basis, but there is lar

Cerebral-evoked potentials were used to study a 25-year-old man, the older of two siblings with congenital insensitivity to all noxious stimuli, gross impairment of temperature perception, and anhidrosis. Electrical stimulation of tooth pulp consistently eliciting pain and cerebral responses in normal subjects evoked neither cerebral potentials nor painful or other sensations in our patient. However, ordinarily painful electric shocks to the skin of his face evoked cerebral responses as well as sensations lacking disagreeable qualities. Those cerebral potentials elicited by electrical stimulat

A case of Fabry's disease is reported. The patient had multiple supernumerary, impacted, and unerupted teeth and other developmental abnormalities of the facial skeleton. The patient tolerated surgical removal of impacted and unerupted teeth without complications. However, this did not relieve the facial pain. The expected prognosis of this patient will be a continued vascular and renal degeneration with death probable before the age of 50 years if the disease is untreated. Currently, the patient is being considered as a possible candidate for renal transplantation.

Odontodysplasia is a rare developmental anomaly affecting the tooth structures in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. The enamel is thin and uneven in thickness, and the detinal tissue surrounds very large pulp chambers. Denticles are present in the pulp organ. The maxilla is involved twice as frequently as the mandible. Most of the affected teeth are in the anterior segments; however, all other teeth can be affected. The cause is unknown. Because of the tendency of the affected teeth to develop abscesses, the most common treatment is extraction. Two additional cases are reported, and the

Two cases of bilateral double dens invaginatus in the maxillary incisor region have been reported. One of the patients (Case 1), a 12-year-old boy, had double invaginations in both of the erupted teeth in the maxillary lateral incisor region. The other patient (Case 2), a boy 8 years of age, had double invaginations in each of the two partially developed supernumerary teeth that were impacted in the palate in the maxillary central incisor region. Double bilateral dens invaginatus would appear to be a most unusual occurrence.
