A novel tool to identify covert syndromes in children with cleft lips and palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip (CL) and cleft palate (CP) are congenital craniofacial anomalies characterized by incomplete fusion of the lip and/or the roof of the mouth during embryonic development. CL/CP are considered syndromic if they are associated with at least 1 another congenital malformation. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of our study was to create a concise, simple tool for clinicians to help them identify, in children with clefts, covert syndromes, taking into consideration clinical, preclinical, and infraclinical signs and symptoms. METHODS: We used the Human Phenotype Ontology website databa

Oral microbiome dysbiosis in cryptogenic ischemic stroke patients with high-risk patent foramen ovale.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is the most common congenital heart abnormality of foetal origin and has been associated with cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS) through several mechanisms, with most theories supporting paradoxical embolism. Other possible but unknown contributing factors, such as the role of the microbiome in PFO-associated strokes, remain unclear. We analysed saliva metagenomes to study the differences in the oral microbiome between young-onset CIS patients with clinically relevant high-risk PFO (n = 52) and those without PFO (n = 52). Age- and sex-matched stroke-free controls (n =

Use of a 3D-printed Model for Autotransplantation Adjacent to a Cleft Site.

Early loss of teeth in the premaxilla can limit future restorative options. One solution is replacement using autotransplantation. This surgical technique can be optimized by using 3D-printed models to aid in planning and improving the prognosis. The pur- pose of this case report is to describe the autotransplantation of a premolar into the site of a hopeless maxillary incisor in a 12-year-old male with bilateral cleft lip and palate who had missed previous bone grafting opportunities, using a 3D-printed ana- logue. After a 25-month-follow-up, the autotransplantation continued to be successful

Natural mutants in mammalian facial morphology: A review of palate clefting in bats.

Bats (order Chiroptera) exhibit great diversity in the size and shape of their palates. One palate characteristic in particular that diverges from other mammals is the presence of a natural and nonpathological cleft palate in roughly half of the ∼1500 species of bats. Despite being typically detrimental when present in other mammals, bats have repeatedly evolved a midline cleft palate in at least 10 lineages and a bilateral cleft palate at least once and, based on observations presented, possibly more. Additionally, some bats that typically do not have a nonpathological cleft palate have been

Multinational cross-sectional study and meta-analysis on radicular grooves, C-shaped canals, and taurodontism in mandibular first premolars across 20 countries.

The success of root canal therapy is fully predicated upon a complete understanding of root and canal morphology and all the anatomical variations that can complicate the endodontic treatment. Of these morphological variations, taurodontism, RGs, and C-shaped canals are of note due to their implications on diagnosis, treatment planning, and endodontic success. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and regional variations of C-shaped canals, RGs, and taurodontism across 20 countries using CBCT imaging and meta-analytic methods. A multicenter, cross-sectional study analyzed CBCT dataset

Continuous automated analysis of facial dynamics of brachycephalic and normocephalic dogs in different contexts.

This study develops a novel automated method for measuring continuous dynamics of dog facial behavior based on video-based tracking of 46 facial landmarks grounded in the Dog Facial Action Coding System. This method is applied for comparing the facial behavior of ( n 1 = 7 ) brachycephalic (Boston Terrier) and ( n 2 = 7 ) normocephalic (Jack Russel Terrier) dogs in four different contexts, eliciting various inner states: positive (play and called by name) and negative (separation and stranger). Having objectively quantified facial dynamics in brachycephalic and normocephalic dogs, we have

Rare variants in PRKCI cause Van der Woude syndrome and other features of peridermopathy.

Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by lower lip pits and orofacial clefts (OFCs). With a prevalence of ∼1 in 35,000 live births, it is the most common form of syndromic clefting. Most VWS is attributed to variants in IRF6 (∼70%) or GRHL3 (∼5%), leaving up to 25% of individuals without a molecular diagnosis. Both IRF6 and GRHL3 function in a transcriptional regulatory network (TRN) governing differentiation of periderm, a single epithelial cell layer preventing pathological adhesions during palatogenesis. Periderm disruption can elicit a spectrum of phe

The AADOCR Position Statement on Topical Fluoride.

Topical fluorides play a critical role in the prevention and management of dental caries and have been a cornerstone of evidence-based oral health promotion for decades. A rigorous understanding of the improved acid resistance of fluorapatite, with more recent evidence of the antimicrobial actions of fluorides, has helped establish its key role in caries management. The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) recommends using fluoride-containing dentifrices at 1,000 to 1,500 ppm twice daily based on the current evidence. For preschool-aged children, only a sma
