Tracheal atresia (TA) is a rare condition and is accompanied by various congenital abnormalities. In our study of two cases, the patient's condition led to challenging resuscitation efforts after birth, ultimately resulting in an unfortunate outcome. Despite collaborative interventions by multiple medical teams, neither of the baby in both cases could be saved. The autopsy findings in one case shed light on the complexity of the condition, providing valuable insights for future clinical management and research in similar cases. Autopsy was not performed in second case; it was evaluated clinica

BACKGROUND: H-type tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEFs) are rare congenital malformations characterized by an abnormal connection between the trachea and esophagus in the absence of esophageal atresia. These lesions may remain undiagnosed for years due to subtle and non-specific symptoms, often resulting in chronic pulmonary complications. Delayed diagnosis can contribute to the development of long-standing inflammation and fibrosis, which significantly complicates surgical intervention.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 14-year-old girl with a previously undiagnosed H-type TEF who was

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) represents a pathological connection between the trachea and esophagus, classified into congenital and acquired categories. Congenital TEF arises from embryological malformations, often coexisting with esophageal atresia (EA), while acquired TEF primarily stems from malignancies, radiotherapy, or trauma. This condition disrupts normal anatomical functions, leading to significant clinical issues, such as aspiration, respiratory infections, and malnutrition. The current review consolidates findings on the etiology, classification, and pathological mechanisms of TE

INTRODUCTION: Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), often occurring with esophageal atresia (EA), presents significant respiratory challenges in neonates. Neither the effect of EA/TEF, nor the effect of post-surgical complications such as tracheomalacia, on respiratory effort has been previously quantified. This study calculates the tracheal resistive component of work of breathing (TR-WOB) to quantify breathing effort pre- and post-surgical repair of EA/TEF. The primary objective of this study was to calculate the TR-WOB before and after surgical repair and compare it to normal values.
METHODS: F

Vanderbilt University was the site of two important operations that have been largely overlooked in the history of pediatric surgery. In November 1943 Rollin Daniel, Jr., was the third surgeon in the world and the first in the South to have a newborn infant survive after primary repair of esophageal atresia (EA) with tracheoesophageal atresia (TEF; EA/TEF). Daniel's insight was to expose the anomaly from the right side of the mediastinum, the standard exposure where the aorta is in its usual left-sided position. For his own reasons, Daniel reverted to the more cumbersome left-sided approach us

BackgroundVACTERL association is a mnemonically useful acronym for a condition characterized by the sporadic, non-random association of specific birth defects in multiple organ systems. Described in the early 1970s, it is typically defined by the presence of three or more of these congenital malformations: vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistulas, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities. In addition to these core components, patients may also have other congenital anomalies. VACTERL association does not involve neuro-cognitive impairment unless; associated w

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a multiorgan disease caused by pathogenic variants in genes involved in the FA/BRCA DNA repair pathway. We report a 10-year-old female who presented with multiple congenital anomalies consistent with VACTERL (Vertebral anomalies, Anal atresia, Cardiac anomalies, Tracheoesophageal fistula, Esophageal/duodenal atresia, and Renal and Limb anomalies) and PHENOS (abnormal Pigmentation, small Head, small Eyes, central Nervous system anomalies, Otological anomalies, short Stature), and later exhibited global developmental delay. She tested positive for a de novo likely pathogen

A tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is defined as a pathological connection between the trachea and the esophagus, leading to a spillover of oral and gastric secretions into the respiratory tract. TEF is either congenital or acquired. Congenital TEFs are rare in adults and are mainly associated with esophageal atresia that presents during infancy and childhood. However, much less is known about acquired TEF, which mainly affects the adult population. In adult patients, the majority of TEFs are acquired, with mediastinal malignancies, such as esophageal cancer and lung cancer, representing the et

AIM: Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury may be either congenital or acquired due to surgical trauma in patients with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF). A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to define the risk factors for developing VCP and other nerve injuries.
METHODS: Systematic literature search was conducted for the period 2000 (Jan) to 2024 (Jan) under the PRISMA guidelines. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024532277). EMBASE, MEDLINE and PUBMED databases were searched and qualitative and quantitative

BACKGROUND: In August 2021, three female semiconductor workers applied for occupational disease compensation due to congenital diseases diagnosed in their children: patient A (immunoglobulin A nephropathy, vesicoureteral reflux, renal agenesis), patient B (renal agenesis, esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula), and patient C (congenital megacolon). The Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI) initially assessed the relatedness of these conditions to occupational exposure as low. However, the Occupational Disease Adjudication Committee of the Korea Workers' Compensa

INTRODUCTION: Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) in neonates with esophageal atresia (EA) is conventionally closed by open or thoracoscopic surgery. We present a case of a rare yet potentially life-threatening complication following thoracoscopic ligation of a TEF, using a polymer clip.
CASE REPORT: A term boy (GA: 42 + 1 weeks; BW: 3,110 g) underwent thoracoscopic TEF repair for Type C EA. We ligated the fistula using a polymer clip followed by primary esophageal anastomosis on the second day of life. At ten weeks of age, we readmitted the infant due to recurrent bronchitis and episodes of post

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies affecting multiple organ systems require thorough anatomical documentation to advance our understanding of developmental variations and guide clinical management strategies. The objective was to document comprehensive anatomical findings in a 37-week female fetus with multiple congenital anomalies, emphasizing the importance of thorough evaluation.
CASE PRESENTATION: Comprehensive cadaveric dissection was performed on a preserved 37-week female fetus with antenatal history of congenital abnormalities. Dissection revealed three significant anomalies: Type C tra

Surgery for tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) often necessitates the insertion of a Fogarty catheter (FC) to assist the surgeon in identifying the fistula. However, when the TEF is located close to the glottis, bronchoscopic identification of the TEF and FC insertion can be particularly challenging. A 2-month-old female infant exhibited frequent apneic episodes during feeding from postnatal day 5. A subsequent contrast swallow study and bronchoscopy led to the diagnosis of H-type esophageal atresia. Surgical ligation of the TEF was performed on Day 64 of life. Under general anesthesia induction

AIM OF THE STUDY: Anastomotic stricture after trachea-oesophageal fistula/oesophageal atresia (TOF/OA) repair is a significant challenge in paediatric surgery. This study investigates the causes, risks, and the need for multiple dilatation procedures.
METHOD: Data were retrospectively collected from a single centre performing surgeries on babies with TOF/OA from 1998 to 2023.
RESULTS: A total of 47 patients were grouped into AS (with anastomotic strictures, n = 33) and NS (no strictures, n = 14). The median birth weights were 2535 g and 2630 g, respectively. AS group had more premature infan

It is known that the presence of associated anomalies has become one of the most critical prognostic factor for infants born with oesophageal atresia (OA). Associated VACTERAL group of abnormalities are common, but other associations are rare. Anomalies of the hepatobiliary system are even more rare among other groups. There are only a few such cases in the literature including adults and paediatric population. We describe the findings and management of one infant born with OA with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) and Ano rectal malformation (ARM), who was later shown to have features of obstru

INTRODUCTION: VACTERL association (VA) is defined as the nonrandom co-occurrence of at least three of the following six features: Vertebral anomalies (V), Anal atresia (A), Cardiac defects (C), Tracheo-esophageal fistula (TE), Renal defects (R), and Limb anomalies (L). The genetic basis of VA remains undiscovered.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we report a 22-year-old male patient suspected of VA at birth (TE: esophageal atresia (EA), C: dextrocardia, without heterotaxy, and L: hypoplasia of thumb phalanges). Additionally, the patient presented lacrimal gland aplasia, xerostomia, and pulmo

BACKGROUND: Despite the rapid advancement of robotic surgery across various surgical domains, only cases of robotic repair (RR) for neonates with esophageal atresia (EA) have been reported. Comprehensive studies comparing RR and thoracoscopic repair (TR) are lacking. The authors aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of RR and TR for EA.
METHODS: A retrospective multicenter study was conducted on 155 EA neonates undergoing RR (79 patients) or TR (76 patients) between August 2020 and February 2023 using propensity score matching. Asymmetric port distribution and step-trocar insertion techniq

BACKGROUND: Maintaining oxygenation during neonatal open repair of esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula is difficult. Inverse ratio ventilation can be used during one lung ventilation to improve the oxygenation and lung mechanics.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the impact of two different ventilatory strategies (inverse ratio ventilation vs. conventional ratio ventilation) during one lung ventilation in neonatal open repair of esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula on the incidence of oxygen desaturation episodes.
METHODS: We enrolled 40 term neonates undergoi
