Implicit Biases and Empathy for Rape Victims: Neural and Behavioural Responses to Facial Cues.

Society's empathic response to a rape victim plays a crucial role in her physical and psychological recovery. However, these responses are often hindered by biases shaped by sociocultural norms and gender stereotypes. Such biases may arise from judgements about a woman's clothing, appearance, place of residence or occupation. This study examines a subtle yet impactful form of discriminatory bias formed from facial images of presumed rape victims. The visual characteristics of the female faces were systematically manipulated to represent (a) cultural or traditional prototypical signature ("Bind

Understanding Nicotine Use in Schizophrenia Through a Psychosocial Lens: A Narrative Review.

Objective: Nicotine use in schizophrenia remains markedly higher than in the general population, contributing to increased morbidity, relapse, and functional impairment. While biological factors have been widely studied, limited attention has been given to the psychosocial factors that sustain nicotine use in this group. This review synthesizes available evidence on these psychosocial influences to inform intervention planning and policy development. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar to identify studies from 2000 to 2025 that examined

Experimental evolution reveals contrasting adaptive landscapes in lab and field environments.

Experimental evolution is widely used to infer microbial responses to environmental change, yet most laboratory studies impose constant, well-mixed conditions that differ fundamentally from fluctuating, spatially structured field environments. We compared genomic evolution in the leaf litter-associated bacterium Curtobacterium strain MMLR14_002 under control and warming treatments in laboratory culture and in a complementary field experiment. Laboratory-derived isolates accumulated more mutations per genome and exhibited stronger locus-level parallelism, with mutations recurring in a small num

Diagnostic yield and impact of internal transcribed spacer sequencing from clinical specimens on antifungal management in patients with suspected fungal infection.

UNLABELLED: Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing has been increasingly used for the diagnosis of fungal infection. However, data on its real-world clinical utility are limited. We retrospectively evaluated the diagnostic yield from direct clinical specimens using the final diagnosis as the gold standard, and studied the impact of ITS sequencing on antifungal management in a university hospital with an unrestricted order setting. A total of 315 specimens were collected from 227 patients between November 2023 and April 2024. Of these, 59 (18.7%) were from fungal infection cases. ITS sequ

Identification of a novel plant polerovirus in the whitefly Aleuroclava gordoniae.

We report the genome sequence of Aleuroclava gordoniae-associated polerovirus (AgAP), identified from the whitefly Aleuroclava gordoniae. The 5,650-nt AgAP genome contains 6 open reading frames. Phylogenetic analysis places AgAP within the genus Polerovirus, which comprises plant-infecting viruses. This study provides a genomic resource for further investigation of virus-insect associations.

The influence of the pharmaceutical industry and the pharmacy sector on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health: a yarning study.

While pharmaceutical companies develop life-saving medicines and the pharmacy sector is integral to healthcare delivery, entities within the medicines sector can also operate as powerful commercial actors. The practices of the pharmaceutical industry and the pharmacy sector warrant scrutiny through a commercial determinants of health lens. This is particularly important for Indigenous peoples, who experience inequities within Western healthcare systems while also holding enduring cultural knowledge of traditional medicines. Despite increasing international attention to the practices of the pha

Dynamics and virulence of Enterobacteriaceae reservoirs harboring blaCTX-M group 1 in community wastewater.

UNLABELLED: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria are ubiquitous and can cause serious infections. Here, we examined untreated community wastewater influent as a reservoir for blaCTX-M group 1 organisms and their virulence potential. Raw influent samples (n = 268) were collected from four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) representing dense urban populations. We observed that blaCTX-M group 1 levels were high at all WWTPs and only ~1-2 log10 lower and not correlated to common human-specific microbiome fecal markers, Lachno3 and HF183, indicating a lack of connection to h

The Impact of S-220-Loaded Silk Hydrogels on In Vitro Neurite Outgrowth in 2 and 3 Dimensions.

Silk hydrogels have attracted increasing interest as biocompatible substrates for neural cell culture and regenerative research. Recent research has shown that activation of exchange protein directly activated by cAMP 2 (Epac2) promotes neurite outgrowth in several neuronal models. Here, we investigated the effects of Bombyx mori silk hydrogel, alone or in combination with S-220, a non-hydrolysable cAMP analogue that selectively activates Epac2, on neurite outgrowth. Epac2 activation significantly and dose-dependently enhanced both the total and longest neurite length. Neurons cultured on silk

Interventions or strategies to improve access to mental health services among Black African immigrants in high-income host countries: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review will map and describe the literature on interventions or strategies to improve access to mental health services among Black African immigrants residing in high-income countries. INTRODUCTION: Black African immigrants residing in high-income countries experience a disproportionately high prevalence of mental health issues driven by pre-migration trauma, migration stressors, and post-migration social determinants. Despite this burden, access to mental health services remains limited due to barriers such as stigma, cultural incongruence, and systemic inequities. Wh

Bioactive Peptides in Probiotic Fermented Foods: Structure-Activity Relationships and Cardiometabolic Protective Effects.

Bioactive peptides generated during probiotic fermentation have emerged as a complex class of food-derived molecules with multifaceted physiological effects relevant to cardiometabolic health. Recent advances in peptidomics, structural analysis, and mechanistic evaluation have revealed that fermentation with lactic acid bacteria, Bacillus species, or mixed cultures produces highly diverse peptide profiles whose activities depend on sequence motifs, hydrophobicity, charge distribution, and resistance to gastrointestinal degradation. These peptides modulate key pathways involved in vascular regu

Simulated Microgravity Inhibited the Proliferation of Bovine Muscle Satellite Cells.

This study aimed to assess the effects of simulated microgravity (SMG) on bovine muscle satellite cells (bSCs). The results demonstrated that bSCs maintained a fibroblast-like morphology throughout SMG exposure from day 3 to day 7. However, cells in the SMG group exhibited reduced proliferation compared to the control group, as indicated by lower cell density at both time points. In contrast, cell viability was higher in the SMG group than in the control group. Cell cycle analysis revealed a higher proportion of SMG-treated bSCs in the G0/G1 phase and a lower proportion in the S phase at day 3

Rethinking cultural appropriateness: a critical literature review of definitions, fit, and practice in Black interventions, support, and care.

OBJECTIVE: Culturally appropriate (CA) interventions have been linked to improved health and social outcomes among minoritized groups. However, there remains no clear consensus on what constitutes 'appropriateness' in a culture, particularly within Black culture. This critical literature review examines the conceptualization of cultural appropriateness in research, interventions, care and support designed for Black communities. DESIGN: We searched several databases (including PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, Black Thought and Culture and Google Scholar) and used a combination

Developing validity arguments for artificial intelligence-based assessment: Balancing affordances and threats.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to generate, score and interpret educational assessment, yet these applications are being adopted in a largely unregulated environment. This creates a paradox: Whereas AI systems used in clinical care are subject to formal scrutiny for safety, performance and monitoring, AI systems used to inform consequential decisions about learner progression and future clinical practice are not. Existing validity frameworks remain useful but may not fully account for AI-specific threats. METHODS: We conducted a state-of-the-science conceptual r

Manganese Redox Cycling Promotes Microbial Vanadium Immobilization in Soil.

Although microbial reductive immobilization offers a promising means of treating toxic vanadium(V) in soil, the influence of ubiquitous manganese (Mn) in soil on V geochemistry is still poorly understood. This work demonstrates the significant impact of Mn redox cycling on microbial V immobilization. Positively correlated V and Mn contents in soil coaffected microbial communities. Both manganosite (MnO) and pyrolusite (MnO2) accelerated V(V) bioreduction to V(IV) as highly stable Mn oxovanadic compounds such as MnV2O5. Mn(II), Mn(III), and Mn(IV) were found, enabling Mn redox cycling, thus enh

The PRECISE framework: a structured approach to antibiogram interpretation for antimicrobial optimization at the bedside.

Antimicrobial resistance claimed an estimated 4.95 million lives in 2019. When clinicians prescribe empiric therapy that follows guidelines, mortality drops by roughly a third; when they de-escalate on the basis of culture results, it drops by more than half. Yet the document that should drive both decisions, the antibiogram, is often read superficially or misinterpreted, particularly by physicians without infectious-disease training. Existing stewardship frameworks address prescribing principles, timing, or ecological impact, but none walks the clinician step by step through an individual sus

Butyrate improves the metabolism of proximal tubular cells and attenuates tissue damage in oxalate-induced acute kidney injury.

Metabolic reprogramming of renal cells is closely linked to kidney injury and repair. In proximal tubular cells (PTCs), impaired mitochondrial and peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation leads to a compensatory increase in glycolysis to meet energy demands. Short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate modulate cell metabolism and can attenuate inflammation through activation of the G protein-coupled receptors. We investigated whether butyrate influences PTC metabolism in calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). In vitro, primary murine PTCs were pretreated with sodium butyrate (N
