BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepine medications can be used to treat anxiety, a condition affecting 15% of women of childbearing age in the United States. Studies have shown conflicting results for the association between benzodiazepine use during pregnancy and birth defects.
METHODS: We analyzed 1997-2011 data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multisite, population-based case-control study. We assessed the prevalence of and factors associated with benzodiazepine use in pregnancy among mothers of live-born infants without a birth defect (control mothers). We used logistic regression

A rare case of esophageal atresia/tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA-TEF) with an associated tracheobronchial remnant (TBR) is reported and discussed herein. A 13-month-old patient was seen with a complaint of vomiting of solid food 1 year after EA-TEF repair. An esophagogram showed a tapered narrowing in the lower segment of the esophagus. A re-operation was carried out and a pathologic examination of the resected stenotic segment revealed the presence of a TBR.

We describe the case of a term baby boy born via vaginal delivery at 39 weeks gestation with oesophageal atresia, tracheaoesophageal fistula, situs inversus abdominalis and azygos continuation. The azygos continuation was diagnosed after cardiac echo and confirmed on cardiac catherisation after an unexpected umbilical line position on thoracoabdominal X-ray. The baby underwent a right-sided thoracotomy on day 1 of life for repair of the oesophageal atresia. A double fistula, of both the proximal and distal segments, of the oesophagus with short segment stenosis was confirmed. The tracheo-oesop

Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) is a type of esophageal stenosis, and three histological subtypes (tracheobronchial remnants, fibromuscular thickening or fibromuscular stenosis, and membranous webbing or esophageal membrane) are described. Symptoms of CES usually appears with the introduction of the semisolid alimentation. Dysphagia is the most common symptom, but esophageal food impaction, respiratory distress or failure to thrive can be clinical manifestations of CES. Wide spectrum of differential diagnoses leads to delayed definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Depends on hyst

PURPOSE: Thoracoscopic repair can be safely performed in most types of congenital esophageal atresia (EA), including in patients with long gap EA or very low birth weight. Accordingly, we performed single- or multistage thoracoscopic repair for various EA types. We aimed to report our therapeutic strategy for thoracoscopic radical surgery for treating EA and its outcome.
METHODS: Outcomes of radical surgeries for treating congenital EA at our institute from 2013 to 2018 were retrospectively evaluated.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight radical surgeries were evaluated: 3 Gross type-A, 1 type-B, 30 type-C

OBJECTIVES: Research on long-term use of mitomycin C (MC) for recurrent esophageal stenoses is limited. We assessed the long-term efficacy and safety of local application of MC for recurrent esophageal stenoses in children.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 39 patients (17 girls) with a median age of 19.5 months (range: 2.4-196.0) at the time of MC application. The etiologies of stenosis were esophageal atresia (n = 25), caustic ingestion (n = 9), congenital esophageal stenosis (n = 3), and other causes (n = 2). Stenosis was single in 35 (90%) patients and multiple in 4 (10%). Before

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of patients with esophageal atresia (EA) on systematic treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) since the neonatal period and to determine factors associated with successful discontinuation of PPI.
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study with prospective data collection of 73 EA patients, over 11 years systematically treated with PPI. Outcome and predictive factors for discontinuation of PPI treatment were evaluated at study end in February 2017. The incidence of anastomotic strictures was compared with a historical cohort of 134 EA patients followed in the

Nitrogen (N) deposition is a major threat to biodiversity in many habitats. The recent introduction of cleaner technologies in Switzerland has led to a reduction in the emissions of nitrogen oxides, with a consequent decrease in N deposition. We examined different drivers of plant community change, that is, N deposition, climate warming, and land-use change, in Swiss mountain hay meadows, using data from the Swiss biodiversity monitoring program. We compared indicator values of species that disappeared from or colonized a site (species turnover) with the indicator values of randomly chosen spe

Congenital esophageal stenosis is a very rare condition and there is no standard treatment. We report the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of 11 patients with this condition managed at our institution. The most common symptom was dysphagia. The age at diagnosis was between 1 day and 14 years (mean age: 4.7 years). The esophagogram confirmed the diagnosis. Five patients presented associated anomalies. Four patients received surgical treatment and 7 only balloon dilatations. Pathologic examinations showed 3 fibromuscular stenosis and one with tracheobronchial remnants. All patients had a good ou

AIMS: To investigate the role played by amniotic fluid in late fetal nutrition by analysis of infants born with digestive tract atresia.
METHODS: Birth weight (BW), gestational age and gender of infants born with oesophageal (OA), duodenal (DA), jejunal (JA) and ileal atresia (IA) were recorded and BW Z-scores compared. Infants with incomplete obstruction (stenosis), chromosomal or syndromic conditions and multiple congenital malformations were excluded. Term infants admitted with suspected postnatal intestinal obstruction in whom no congenital malformation was found were used as a control gr

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Refractory esophageal strictures are rare conditions in pediatrics, and are often due to anastomotic, congenital, or caustic strictures. Traditional treatment options include serial dilation and surgical stricture resection; endoscopic intralesional steroid injections, mitomycin C, and externally removable stents combined with dilation have had variable success rates. Although not as widely used, endoscopic electrocautery incisional therapy (EIT) has been reported as an alternative treatment for refractory strictures in a small number of adult series. INTRODUCTION: Congenital malformations are associated with substantial neonatal morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, only sparse data are available on the modalities of care provided to and the associated clinical outcomes in affected neonates. In this study, we focused on five malformations that require surgery during the neonatal period: duodenal stenosis and atresia (DA), gastroschisis (GA), omphalocele (OM), congenital diaphragmatic herniation (CDH), and esophageal atresia (EA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the Hessian neonatal registry (2010-2015) to identify records including the

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is frequently congenital and requires surgical correction. TEF can also occur secondary to malignant esophageal tumors or benign diseases and these cases are managed by endoscopic means, such as closing the defect with metallic stents. Although esophageal injury can occur secondary to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), TEF secondary to chronic NSAIDs use has not been described in the literature. We report the case of a male patient with refractory migraine and chronic use of NSAIDs, with a history of esophageal stenosis presenting with acute-onset to
