Teebi hypertelorism syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that has eluded a molecular etiology since first described in 1987. Here we report on two unrelated families with a Teebi hypertelorism-like syndrome and Teebi hypertelorism phenotype who have missense mutations in Sperm Antigen With Calponin Homology And Coiled-Coil Domains (SPECC1L), previously associated with oblique facial clefting and Opitz G/BBB syndrome. The first patient and his affected mother were previously-reported by Hoffman et al. in this journal as a new syndrome resembling Teebi hypertelorism and Aarskog syndrom

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital malformation, rarely located in the cervical region and almost never involved in a neonate with acute respiratory distress in the delivery room.
CASE PRESENTATION: A female newborn with respiratory distress syndrome caused by a large left cervical mass. Intubation was difficult due to tracheal deviation. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a left cervical cyst displacing the trachea and esophagus laterally. Surgical excision was performed via a cervical approach on the 5th day, and pathological examination revealed a bronchogenic cyst. The patien

AIM: The aim of the study is to report feasibility and safety of endoscopic esophageal substitution in infants with pure esophageal atresia and wide gap tracheoesophageal fistula with a minimum one year follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted from January 2012 for twenty four consecutive months at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. All babies either followed up or referred for esophageal substitution without any history of mediastinitis or associated major congenital anomaly and weighing greater than 6kg were to be included in the study. The indication, intraoperative

Esophageal stenosis is a relatively uncommon condition in pediatrics and requires an accurate diagnostic approach. Here we report the case of a 9-month old female infant who presented intermittent vomiting, dysphagia and refusal of solid foods starting after weaning. She was treated for gastroesophageal reflux. At first, radiological investigation suggested achalasia, while esophagoscopy revelaed a severe congenital esophageal stenosis at the distal third of the esophagus. She underwent four endoscopic balloon dilatations that then allowed her to swallow solid food with intermittent mild dysph

Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) is a rare clinical condition but is frequently associated with esophageal atresia (EA). The aim of this study is to report the diagnosis, management, and outcome of CES associated with EA. Medical charts of CES-EA patients from Lille University Hospital, Sainte-Justine Hospital, and Montreal Children's Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Seventeen patients (13 boys) were included. The incidence of CES in patients with EA was 3.6%. Fifteen patients had a type C EA, one had a type A EA, and one had an isolated tracheoesophageal fistula. Seven patients had

BACKGROUND: Despite the vast focus of research in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), the natural history of untreated EoE remains undefined. Current expert consensus panels are calling for natural history studies to define long-term risks, adverse events, and progression of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: To address the natural course and long-term adverse events of EoE.
DESIGN: Retrospective, single-center study.
SETTING: Tertiary-care center. A cohort of patients from the year 1988 initially diagnosed as having congenital esophageal stenosis who were later reclassified as having EoE.
PATIENTS: Nine

An 8-week-old male domestic shorthair was presented to the Internal Medicine Service at North Carolina State University for regurgitation. Radiographic diagnosis of generalized esophageal dilation and failure of esophageal peristalsis were compatible with diagnosis of congenital megaesophagus. Endoscopic examination of the esophagus revealed a fibrous stricture just orad to the lower esophageal sphincter. Conservative management to increase the body condition and size of the kitten consisted of feeding through a gastrostomy tube, during which time the esophagus regained normal peristaltic func

AIMS: Oesophageal atresia (OA) with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (TOF) is the most common congenital anomaly of the oesophagus. There is limited literature suggesting a linear relationship between increasing gap length and the incidence of all major complications. We sought to assess whether measured gap length at the time of surgery was related to outcomes in our patients.
METHODS: All patients with a diagnosis of OA +/- TOF who underwent repair under a single surgeon between 1983 and 2012 were included. The length between the oesophageal pouches was measured at the time of surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Right-sided aortic arch with aberrant left subclavian artery and ligamentum arteriosum, after double aortic arch, is the second most common complete vascular ring. It was traditionally treated by open surgical thoracotomy and recently video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been used in some cases.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We describe the cases of two infants who presented with gastroesophageal reflux, dyspnea, dysphagia secondary to aneurysmal dilatation of the retroesophageal arch confirmed by imaging data. VATS procedure was performed through a left thoracoscopic approac

This report presents the case of an 8.5-year-old boy with Down syndrome after experiencing extensive caustic injury to the oesophagus and stomach resulting from the accidental ingestion of concentrated sulphuric acid. The patient had undergone 32 unsuccessful endoscopic oesophageal stricture dilatations and stenting procedures performed over a period of 15 mo following the accident. Surgical reconstruction of the oesophagus was not possible due to previous gastric and cardiac surgeries for congenital conditions. Before referring the patient for salivary fistula surgery, the patient received a

INTRODUCTION: We present the experiences from two European centers performing the Foker technique (FT) of esophageal lengthening by axial traction and the Kimura advancement (KA) method of lengthening the upper pouch by extrathoracic resiting a spit fistula (SF) in children with long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA, gap length > 5 cm).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 15 children were treated (8 pure EA, 6 lower tracheoesophageal fistula [TEF], and 1 upper TEF). Gaps ranged from 5 to 14 cm. Nine children already had a SF. Patients were grouped according to the presence of a SF and the subsequen

Total esophagogastric disconnection (TED) is an alternative surgical procedure in resistant gastroesophageal reflux disease. We report 2 severe, not yet described long-term complications of TED occurring in 4 children with a history of esophageal atresia. Three children presented with stenosis of the esophagojejunal anastomosis 5 months to 9 years after TED, requiring repeated dilations associated with mitomycin C application in one of them. Barrett esophagus was observed in 3 children 8 to 9 years after TED. Careful long-term clinical and endoscopic follow-up of children who underwent TED is

Megaesophagus is a disorder of the esophagus characterized by diffuse dilation and decreased peristalsis. It is classified into congenital and acquired forms. Gastrointestinal, endocrine, immune-mediated, neuromuscular, paraneoplastic, and toxic disorders have been associated with acquired megaesophagus. Common clinical signs of megaesophagus are regurgitation, weight loss, coughing, and halitosis. Most cases of megaesophagus can be diagnosed using thoracic radiography; however, diagnosing the underlying cause requires a thorough history and additional diagnostics. The treatment, management, a

The first thoracoscopic esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EATEF) repair was performed in March of 2000. This report evaluates the results and evolution of the technique in a single surgeons' experience after the first decade of thoracoscopic EATEF repair. From March 2000 to September 2012, 52 consecutive patients with type 3 EATEF, and an additional nine patients with pure esophageal atresia (EA) were repaired by or under the direct supervision of a single surgeon. Patient weight ranged from 1.2 to 3.8 kg (mean 2.6 kg). Twenty-two patients had significant associated congenital

BACKGROUND: The esophagus is physiologically devoid of eosinophils, so their presence would suggest some underlying pathology. The prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) has steadily increased in Western countries. Previous studies have described EoE in association with congenital esophageal atresia (CEA), which is the most common congenital anomaly of the esophagus. However, the association remains unclear.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective histological analysis examining for eosinophil infiltration in the esophagus of patients with CEA following surgical repair or congenital esoph

BACKGROUND: Urethral coitus is a very rare finding in adolescent women. There are 26 reported cases in the literature, but only two were in adolescents. Urethral coitus has been most commonly described in women with müllerian anomalies and less commonly in other unusual clinical circumstances.
CASES: We report 2 cases of adolescent women with known müllerian anomalies who were unknowingly engaging in urethral coitus; 1 adolescent with known vaginal agenesis and VACTERL association and one 16-year-old with an oblique vaginal septum and non-communicating functioning uterine horn. Both young wom

Data on the neurodevelopmental outcome of esophageal atresia (EA) survivors are scarce, controversial, and based on small samples. This is an observational prospective longitudinal study on a selected cohort of low-risk EA survivors. We considered a low-risk EA survivor a patient with the following characteristics: gestational age >32 weeks, no long gap, no genetic or chromosomic anomaly associated with neurodevelopmental delay, and no further major surgical congenital anomalies. Infants were evaluated with scales derived from the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development - 3rd Edition a

Pancreatic acinar cells are a well-recognized finding at the gastroesophageal junction, but their histogenesis and biological significance are unclear. From the prospective Central European multicenter histoGERD trial, we recruited 1,071 individuals undergoing gastroscopy for various non-selected reasons. Biopsy material was systematically sampled from the gastroesophageal junction and from the stomach. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of pancreatic acinar cells and to relate their presence to various histologic and clinical features. Overall, pancreatic acinar cells were observed in 1
